Police in Uganda are investigating the death of a Nigerian professional footballer who allegedly fell from a shopping mall in the capital, Kampala.Abubakar Lawal, 29, reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade, where he had gone to visit a Tanzanian friend. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, the police said. They said Lawal's friend, identified as Omary Naima, had left him in her room – which is part of the mall building - preparing tea before the incident happened.Lawal was a striker playing for local team Vipers Sports Club, which has expressed its sadness for the "untimely passing of our beloved player".
Tributes have been flowing in for the footballer, who has been with the Vipers club since July 2022 after a two-year stint with AS Kigali in Rwanda.Vipers said "Lawal (Man from Sokoto) was a unique person. He had a big heart of gold. He really cared about people and went out of his way to help. He was incredibly generous"."We mourn the sudden demise of our ex-player Abubakar Lawal earlier today. May God grant him eternal rest," his former team in Nigeria, Nasarawa United, said."It's hard to take in that you're no more Lawal A kind, talented, jolly, and loving person you have been. You will forever be missed bro," said Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza.Local media say the matter has left more questions than answers amid conflicting reports of the circumstances of Lawal's death. Some media had earlier reported that he had died in a motorcycle accident.Police said the exact circumstances of the death were being investigated."Authorities are retrieving CCTV footage and conducting thorough interrogations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident," police said. The police have retrieved some items belonging to the deceased player, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets and training kit."Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses," the police added.

Cyriel Dessers to AEK Athens latest as Rangers star AGREES terms and ex-Gers ace tips Lawrence Shankland as replacement

A deadline has been set for progress on the transfer with pre-season about to begin DESSTINEY Cyriel Dessers to AEK Athens latest as Rangers star AGREES terms and ex-Gers ace tips Lawrence Shankland as replacement Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AEK ATHENS are pushing hard to tie up a deal for Cyriel Dessers within the next 48 hours. And former Rangers star Steven Naismith reckons Lawrence Shankland would be a 'safe bet' to replace the striker's goals at Ibrox. The Greek side are offering around £4million, but the new Ibrox owners want closer to £5m for the Nigeria star. AEK head to the Netherlands for a pre-season camp tomorrow and new boss Marko Nicolic wants Dessers to join them there this week. Club chiefs will look to thrash out a deal with their Gers counterparts in the next few days — with new boss Russell Martin already looking for replacements. And Naismith believes Rangers should make a last-minute play for hitman Shankland. The Scotland striker is a free agent after stalling on signing a new deal at Hearts — with West Brom and also Saudi clubs interested. Naisy bossed Shanks, 29, at the Jambos when he netted 31 times in the 2023/24 season and is shocked Rangers haven't moved for him so far. He said: 'In one respect I'm surprised. He's as safe a bet as you're going to get for scoring goals in Scotland. 'What goes against him is probably his mobility but he's just a really intelligent player now. 'He's a good link between midfield and attack as well as a goal scorer. The other dynamics, which would come into any thought of signing him, is his age. Kris Boyd explains why Celtic striker Adam Idah and Rangers' Cyriel Dessers are similar players 'He's somebody who's probably seen as being in and around his prime. Is he going to be your main striker? Is he not? 'I saw it with Kris Boyd at Rangers who was probably similar in terms of goal return. 'Walter Smith never played him in Europe and never played him in Old Firms. 'But Walter was a manager with loads of experience and know-how to handle him. 'I'm not saying Shanks is like-for-like but they're the kind of challenges you have to think about. 'In one respect it would be a free transfer but that means it's still expensive to sign players who are scoring 30 goals a season on a free. 'But I'm sure Shanks will definitely have some offers because for two seasons he's just been unbelievable.' New boss Martin will implement his possession-based style at Gers. 4 Asked if Shankland could fit in with that, Naismith said: 'I think he could. From the moment I played with Shanks at Scotland to when I was coaching him, it was about his intelligence. 'That's in terms of where he picks positions up and he's got a real finesse about his touch. 'Then he's got calmness in the final third.' SunSport revealed Martin is on the brink of agreeing a loan deal for Bournemouth right-back Max Aarons. Naismith remembers Aarons as a kid when he was playing for Norwich and reckons he can challenge skipper James Tavernier. He said: 'He's got good experience and he's played at a really good level against top players. 'He's a modern-day full back. He's not the tallest but is very comfortable on the ball, quick and dynamic going forwards and defensively. 'The biggest thing I remember about Max is his attitude was spot on.' ‘If you do that against Celtic, it'll be over before it starts' – New Rangers boss Russell Martin sent ominous warning

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TONY CASCARINO has warned Russell Martin not to fall victim to 'overplaying' at Ibrox. The former Celtic frontman says it could be over before it starts for Martin if he stays true to his football philosophy at Ibrox. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Russell Martin is hoping to bring a 'dominant' style of play to Rangers Credit: PA 2 Tony Cascarino during his time at Celtic Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd Cascarino told talkSPORT: 'I understand that you can stick to your principles and your ideas. 'But if you're playing for Rangers and you're getting beaten 3-0 against Celtic, you're overplaying and they're demanding that you go for blood - because they do, whether we like it or not - that's what the Old Firm derby's like and you have to be matching that. 'If you're playing tippy-tappy football and you're winning, you won't have a problem. 'I'm being a bit disrespectful saying tippy-tappy but basically I mean overplaying in dangerous areas. 'If they do that against Celtic and come off second best again, it will be over before it even starts, it really will.' Martin will take charge of his first training sessions with the Light Blues squad this coming week. And he'll be hoping to welcome Max Aarons to the fray sooner rather than later. Its understood a deal is in place for the Bournemouth full-back to join Gers on loan for the upcoming season. The next step will be the Ibrox club announcing the move, with Gers believed to have beaten Leeds United in the race. Also on Martin's to-do list is tying Nicolas Raskin down to a new contract on improved terms. What's holding up Nygren Plus Kuhn & Maeda price tags REVEALED Celtic transfer special The former Scotland international wants to mould his his Rangers first team around the energetic Belgian midfielder, who has been attracting interest from clubs across Europe. Meanwhile, the deal to take Cyriel Dessers to AEK Athens looks to have stalled with the Greek club refusing to pay more than £3.8million to land the striker. Gers understandably want a greater fee for their top goal scorer, even if they don't plan to use him as much next year and he is already 30. Accepting such a bid would also translate to a net loss for Rangers, who spent £4.5m to land the Nigerian international from Serie A side Cremonese two years ago. Winger Kwame Poku remains a target for the Light Blues but big-spending Birmingham City are also keen on him. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Osimhen's Man Utd rejection after having "too much respect" to compete with flop

Victor Osimhen is on Manchester United's radar but he previously rejected the prospect of a move to Old Trafford due to having too much respect for one of their strikers Victor Osimhen has previously rejected a move to Manchester United out of respect for one of his compatriots as he claimed he had "too much respect" to battle with him for a starting berth. That was way back in 2020, just before he joined Napoli. It was during his stint with Lille that Osimhen first put himself on the map and his goalscoring exploits made a number of clubs stand up and take note. United were among them, but the Italian side eventually won the race. ‌ Osimhen's refusal to join the Premier League side stemmed from the fact they then had Odion Ighalo on their books. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raised eyebrows when he went and signed the former Watford man to address the team's attacking issues. ‌ Ighalo had a bright start, but quickly tailed off and his record by the time he left Manchester stood at five goals in 23 games. That said, he was one of the senior Nigerian players of his generation and Osimhen had great respect for the player who was nine years his senior. The Napoli frontman felt he couldn't compete with his fellow countryman for a starting spot knowing that ultimately one of them would lose out, which motivated his move to Italy. Osimhen's brother, Andrew, told Complete Sports: "It is very true that Manchester United wanted Victor, but he told me something like he had too much respect for Odion Ighalo to be competing for shirts with his senior colleague. My brother holds Ighalo in high esteem and he just didn't see himself going to Old Trafford to battle for a striking role with the highest goalscorer at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt." Fast forward five years and Osimhen heading to Manchester could yet materialise. Despite firing Napoli to the Serie A title several years ago the striker is now surplus to requirements whilst Antonio Conte remains at the helm. He has bought in Romelu Lukaku and backed the Belgian as his leading light in attack. It forced Osimhen to head out on loan last term but he continued to be prolific whilst at Galatasaray. Now back in Italy, he is likely to be sold once a buyer can be found. ‌ Already this summer he has turned down a move to Saudi Arabia, underlining his desire to stay in Europe and ex-United star Rio Ferdinand is among those to endorse a move for the Nigerian. He said: "I think if I'm looking at the market now and I had to pick him (Viktor Gyokeres) or Osimhen, I'd probably pick Osimhen because of that experience."
