Popular car brand Volkswagen are looking to offer a new practical alternative to SUVs with qualities similar to the iconic microbus.
The German brand is considering launching an electric, compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) to replace the well-loved Touran model, which could be launched as soon as 2027.

MPVs are renowned for their space, practicality and people carrying, making them the ideal family car.
According to Autocar, the new vehicle would be positioned beneath the 'ID Buzz,' offering a smaller footprint, a lighter weight, and a more affordable price.
It is these features that have led to the car being likened to a modern-day microbus.
The microbus was first introduced in 1950 and went on to have an iconic history, becoming synonymous with hippie culture.
The design direction of the new model is still under wraps although it is expected to be influenced by the likes of the 2011 Bulli and 2016 Budd-e.
This new take on the classic Microbus type 2 is reportedly aimed at families looking for a 'no-nonsense, high-utility electric vehicle with sliding rear doors and strong day-to-day usability.'
It is rumoured that this new model is under internal review, with a production decision yet to be officially made.
Reportedly, Volkswagen recently retrieved various MPV concepts from storage to support these internal discussions and explore how their design could be adapted for a new model.
Autocar added: 'This move reflects a broader shift in thinking in Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany, where there is renewed recognition that a dedicated family-focused MPV may still have commercial relevance.'
This model would rival popular electric SUV models like the Skoda Elroq, The Volvo EX30 and the Tesla Model Y.
2026 Genesis GV70, No old ideas
The design direction of the car is also yet to be revealed, although buyers can expect an upright silhouette, short overhangs, a flat floor and a high roof line.
All of these considerations have been made with the aim of making the car as spacious as possible.
Launched in 2003, the Touran model is one of the most successful European models of its type with 2.6 million units sold globally.
However, it could soon be replaced with this new model.
It is reported that if given the green light, the new model could be released as soon as 2027 or 2028.
This has the potential to revive the Touran badge in line with Volkswagen's plan to provide future EVs with traditional names instead of the ID numbers used today.'

Man Utd make drastic change behind the scenes 'after years of poor transfers'
Manchester United have dramatically reduced the size of their scouting network in a bid to put an end to years of bad transfer business. The Red Devils have spent an astonishing £1.6billion on players since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, the last time they won the Premier League title. Poor recruitment has been a factor in United's demise and the new regime at Old Trafford have acknowledged the club's costly mistakes. Director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, 38, will lead a more streamlined scouting network, having joined in February last year. Vivell, who previously worked at RB Leipzig before a brief spell with Chelsea, initially arrived at United on a temporary basis, helping them navigate the 2024 summer transfer window. It was their summer first since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became a co-owner, taking control of football operations. German Vivell's work behind the scenes has earned him plaudits at Old Trafford and the hierarchy trust him to improve their recruitment record. That starts with a new-look scouting network. According to the Manchester Evening News, United once had 100 scouts on the payroll which sources say led to 'years of poor transfers'. Dozens have left the club over the past 12 months, with Ratcliffe overseeing two rounds of redundancies. A 10-man team comprising of Armand Benneker, Marco de Sisti, Roy Beukenkamp, Giuseppe Antonaccio, Ben McFarlan, Jose Mayorga, John Lambert, Norbert Duwel, Steve Head and Nicolas Cinalli are listed as first-team scouts. They'll report to Vivell, with Ratcliffe and his fellow bigwigs expecting results. The Red Devils co-owner claimed last year that United were 'still in the last century on data analysis', a damning indictment on the previous regime led by Ed Woodward. "The club has drifted for a long period of time, a decade or so," Ratcliffe lamented in an interview with the fanzine United We Stand. "Manchester United has become mediocre. It's not elite and it is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world. That's what it used to be under Alex. There is major change to come to achieve elite status. But already there has been huge change at this club. "Until were are as good as anyone in the world, then it's not good enough for Manchester United. We must have the best recruitment in the world. "Data analysis comes alongside recruitment. It doesn't really exist here. We're still in the last century on data analysis here. There's immense amount of useful data that we can get from data analysis and we're in the 'very poor' bracket with data analysis here. "These things don't happen overnight. You can't just flick a light switch and sort out recruitment. It's all about people and we need to find the right people." Michael Sansoni, an engineer for Mercedes' Formula 1 team, has reportedly been lined up to join United at the end of this year he leaves his role. Given that Ratcliffe's petrochemicals company, INEOS, own a stake in Mercedes F1, the process should be smooth and would be supported internally. Half of Gen Z now prioritise exercise over socialising – preferring to share workout selfies than pics with mates
Read below to see what else the poll revealed NO PAIN NO GAIN Half of Gen Z now prioritise exercise over socialising – preferring to share workout selfies than pics with mates Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A POLL of 2,000 adults found 22 per cent of 18-28-year-olds would rather share a post-workout selfie online than a picture of them out with their mates. But 22 per cent feel there aren't enough venues catering to their clean-living aspirations, leaving them frustrated (40 per cent) and lonely (24 per cent). Despite exercise taking priority, 34 per cent say the gym is their least favourite place to socialise. To help, energy drink maker Reign Storm is launching The Energy Bar on June 24, the first venue of its kind to cater to an audience seeking out 'clean' socialising spaces. With a clean menu, areas for warming up, cooling down and light cardio, and fitness-wear dress code, the trial space could provide an insight into the future of the city's bar scene. Rob Adkins, from the brand, said: 'Pubs and bars are awesome, especially in British summertime, but the experience becomes a lot less enjoyable if you don't want to drink alcohol. 'Our research found that UK adults are struggling to find venues that align with their clean-living aspirations, and we think it's time to change that. 'The Reign Storm Energy Bar is a one-of-a-kind venue that fuses the clean-living priorities of a gym space, with the social benefits of a pub.' The study also revealed the top things adults want from a social venue, with 46 per cent longing for a space quiet enough to talk. While 45 per cent want space to chill, 40 per cent look for good food and drink, and 29 per cent want a cost-effective space. More than one in five (22 per cent) want somewhere that's good for them mentally and physically, 19 per cent want 'clean' food and drink options and 18 per cent just want 'vibes' 'No longer about having a drink' It also emerged that reasons for not socialising at the pub included worries about limited alcohol-free options (20 per cent) and the lack of clean or healthier options in general (16 per cent). A third (34 per cent) said it's too expensive and 21 per cent claimed going to the pub makes them anxious, according to the figures. The spokesperson from Reign Storm added: 'For lots of people, socialising is no longer just about having a drink - it's about sharing experiences. 'People want to be able to socialise in a healthy way, and what's healthier than the gym? 'But there are lots of problems in trying to get your social life up to date in the gym, so a space where you can be clean and chatty is very much needed.' It comes after nearly four in 10 Brits are open to a career move - with half of these actively searching for their "calling." And beer-drinking blokes tend to be more fertile and father more children, a study shows.

Five ways to keep your kids cool in the heat IT can be really difficult - and costly - to keep kids cool when it's hot outside. But Fabulous Digital Senior Reporter and mum-of-two Sarah Bull shares five ways to help, and they won't break the budget either. Strip them off It might sound simple, but stripping kids off at home can really help them regulate their temperature when it's warm outside. Just remember to regularly apply suncream, as more of their skin will be exposed to the sun. Cool down bedrooms before nighttime When it's hot outside, it can be difficult for kids to go to sleep - especially if their bedroom feels like an oven. If you have a room that's not in direct sunshine, keep the windows open to let in a breeze. It's also a good idea to keep the curtains closed, to prevent the room from heating up. Wear a hat Another simple technique, but one that really works. Make sure that if your kids are playing outside, they've got a hat on. It keeps their face and head shielded from the sun, and also helps if you've got a little one who struggles with bright sunlight. If your tot struggles to keep a hat on, try one with a strap that goes under the chin to help. Avoid the car The car can be one of the hottest places during a heatwave, and often takes a long time to cool down. If you have the option, it's better to stay at home rather than taking kids out anywhere in a hot car. Stay hydrated This is always important, but even more so in a heatwave. Make sure you're regularly reminding your kids to have a drink, and top them up with cool liquids whenever you can. Use ice too to ensure it's as cold as it can possibly be. However, whilst we all love the sun, it can make us feel a little sticky and sweaty especially when trying to sleep at night. And we tested fans to keep you cool in the summer – the winner costs 1p an hour to run. Finally, from buying better bedding to keeping your PJs ON – here all the surprising ways to keep cool at night in a heatwave.
