CM inaugurates 125 community centres for sustainable livelihood in Meghalaya
Shillong: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated 125 community centres across Garo Hills on Tuesday, funded under the Meghalaya Livelihood and Forest Ecosystem Management Project (MegLIFE).
The centres were virtually inaugurated from Dobakol Awemong in Baghmara C&RD block of South Garo Hills district, where the CM was present for the event.
Built at a cost of Rs 24 lakh each — Rs 13 lakh from the project and Rs 11 lakh from the state — the community centres aim to provide spaces for various community-led activities, including income-generating initiatives.
"The MegLIFE project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), focuses on community-based forest management and livelihood enhancement in 500 villages across 12 districts of Meghalaya.
Alongside constructing these centres, the project has supported several income-generating activities such as nurseries, plantations, minor irrigation check dams, dug-out ponds, plastic tanks, and RCC water storage tanks," an official statement said.
IVCS and SHGs have been integral to the initiative, receiving direct benefits and playing key roles in its execution.
Speaking at the event, the CM emphasised the project's core objectives — restoring degraded forests, strengthening natural resource management, and improving rural livelihoods.

"This project empowers communities to take ownership of forest, land, and water resources," he said.
"We aim to foster a community-driven approach to sustainable livelihoods. Through MegLIFE, we are instilling environmental consciousness while ensuring sustained income through various activities," the CM added.
The project targets the completion of 452 community centres across Meghalaya. Thanking JICA for its support, Sangma said an additional 150-plus centres would soon be completed in the Garo Hills region.
Highlighting the role of these community hubs in fostering development and livelihood initiatives, the chief minister reiterated the project's focus on community empowerment and sustainability.

Different departments have been asked to make arrangements in accordance with the directives within a week," the DM said. He directed the electricity department to make proper arrangements and improve their infrastructure for an uninterrupted power supply to the Sultanganj region and on the trek routes. The officials concerned were also instructed to ensure adequate street lights on trek routes and at the embankments at Sultanganj Siri Ghat, besides fencing/barricading the area. A direction to the public health engineering department was given to ensure sanitation and availability of pure drinking water through tankers, hand pumps and other means. Instructions were also given to the officials to cover drains en route and marking them with yellow paint, provide ambulances at Namami Gangey and Siri ghats at Sultanganj, earmark 'panda chowki' and register pandas (pastors), and make parking arrangements. After collecting the holy water of the Ganga at Sultanganj, where the river becomes 'uttarvahini' (flow turning towards north), the devotees trek barefoot nearly 105 kilometres, carrying kanwars on their shoulders, while chanting 'bolo bam'. On reaching Deoghar, the devotees pay obeisance to Lord Shiva by pouring the holy water on the Shivalinga — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country — and seek blessings.

Rispana-Bindal road projects: Concerns grow over environmental impact, lack of rehab plan
Dehradun: Concerns over the Rs 6,500 crore Rispana-Bindal elevated road project, which is touted as a 'solution to Doon's traffic woes' have intensified with several stakeholders, including residents, activists, and thousands of slum dwellers who may be displaced, expressing apprehension regarding the proposed 26-km elevated corridor, planned over the Rispana and Bindal riverbeds, aims to ease city traffic and offer a quicker route to Mussoorie. But activists claim it may cause irreversible ecological damage and permanently alter Dehradun's skyline. On Tuesday, the Dehradun Citizens Forum hosted a Town Hall Meet on the project at The Doon Library & Research Centre. The session featured a presentation by PWD engineer Jitendra Tripathi and consultancy firm Spectrum. Attended by over 100 professionals from diverse fields, the event saw strong calls for the immediate public release of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) and an inclusive cost-benefit analysis. Participants also urged that river rejuvenation efforts proceed independently of the corridor project. Officials said detailed project reports (DPRs) have been prepared and submitted to the state govt for approval. The criticism about the project centres on two fronts -- environmentalists fear the project will severely impact the Doon valley's ecology, while social activists warn of the large-scale displacement of residents once construction begins. The project also contradicts previous claims by the state govt to rejuvenate the rivers. Activists fear that such a large-scale infrastructure undertaking will leave no scope for restoration and could mark the end of these rivers. They are demanding transparency, environmental safeguards, and clear rehabilitation policies before work starts on the elevated road network. "There is both curiosity and concern among residents across Dehradun about the elevated roads being built over the fragile riverbeds of Rispana and Bindal," said social activist Anoop Nautiyal. "With pillars up to 15 metres high, this corridor risks permanently changing the city's ecological fabric. We're demanding that the Environmental Impact Assessment report be made public so that citizens can engage meaningfully and assess the true costs." Activists also called for public involvement in planning major infrastructure projects, especially those that claim to serve public interest. "There is often a stark contrast between govt claims and ground realities," said Manoj Dewaria, a resident of Kanwali Road. "They say it's to ease traffic, but what about the thousands of families whose future now hangs in the balance? There's been no talk of compensation or rehabilitation. What kind of public policy is this?" With project details still unclear, activists have filed several RTIs, but responses have been vague. One such reply from the PWD, accessed by TOI, stated: "In light of increasing traffic pressure in Dehradun and unavailability of space for road widening, the construction of the Rispana-Bindal elevated corridor is proposed.
