Eagles Trade of Jalen Hurts Backup QB Predicted by Insider
When the 2025 offseason began for the Philadelphia Eagles, the team traded away backup quarterback Kenny Pickett for a late-round pick swap and current quarterback project Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
DTR was never expected to be the immediate backup to Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts. That position was being held for former sixth-round quarterback Tanner McKee this season.

But as a third quarterback, DTR could be seen as a quality fill-in.
That was before the Eagles drafted Syracuse star Kyle McCord in the sixth round of the 2025 draft in April. McCord's arrival on the team has pushed DTR to the outside looking in on the roster.
PennLive.con's Cayden Steele shared their early projection for the 53-man roster and predicted that Thompson-Robinson will end up being the odd man out.
"Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Kyle McCord. After spending the first two years of his career as the Eagles' No. 3 quarterback, McKee will step into the backup role," Steele said. "He played well in his only career start against the New York Giants last season and has been a preseason star. Philadelphia could trade him next offseason for a Day 3 pick.

You never want to see a team giving up on a trade acquisition so early in the process.
Philadelphia is notorious for doing so, though. If they don't think they can get good production from a player, they will simply move on from him. The team also doesn't really look to keep four quarterbacks on the roster either.
DTR's time is running out in Philadelphia. And it's hard to imagine - barring injury - that he can do much of anything to earn a spot this season in Philly.

Luzardo backed by homers from Schwarber and Sosa as Phillies beat struggling Mets 7-1
Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa homered, Jesus Luzardo tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings and the Philadelphia Phillies regained sole possession of first place in the NL East with a 7-1 victory over the slumping New York Mets on Sunday night. Nick Castellanos added two doubles and an RBI for the Phillies, who have won nine of 11 after taking two of three games in the series against their division rivals. Philadelphia (47-31) moved one game ahead of New York in the standings. Francisco Lindor homered late for the Mets, who have lost eight of nine. Luzardo (7-3) allowed three hits with seven strikeouts and a walk. The Phillies did their damage against David Peterson (5-3) in the fourth when they scored five runs. Schwarber led off with his 24th homer, a drive off the batter's eye in center field. After an RBI single by Otto Kemp made it 2-0, Sosa hit a three-run shot on an 84 mph slider into Philadelphia's bullpen in right-center. Sosa also singled and doubled. Peterson didn't come out for the fifth after needing 72 pitches to get through four innings. Key moment Schwarber's homer on a 1-2 cutter to start the fourth changed the game. Peterson had cruised through three innings, allowing only Sosa's infield single. Philadelphia sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, getting five hits and drawing two walks. Key stat Lindor went deep for the second consecutive night — but a long streak came to an end. New York had won 28 straight games in which Lindor homered, one shy of the major league record. The Brooklyn Dodgers won 29 games in a row when Carl Furillo connected from 1951-53. Up next Mets: RHP Paul Blackburn (0-1, 6.92 ERA) starts Monday night at home against Atlanta in the opener of a four-game series. RHP Spencer Schwellenbach (5-4, 3.26) pitches for the Braves. Phillies: After an off day, Philadelphia begins a three-game series at Houston on Tuesday night. LHP Ranger Suárez (6-1, 2.20 ERA) is scheduled to face Astros LHP Framber Valdez (8-4, 3.09). ___ AP MLB: recommended

Phillies Predicted to Cut Ties With Mick Abel After Aaron Nola News
Phillies Predicted to Cut Ties With Mick Abel After Aaron Nola News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have been fortunate that right-hander Mick Abel has thrown the baseball at the level he has throughout the first few starts of his big league career. Advertisement In his 20.1 innings, the 23-year-old has posted a 2.21 ERA and has struck out 17 hitters. Abel, an Oregon native, has looked the part. However, he realistically only had a chance because of Aaron Nola's injury. If Nola doesn't return to the level that the Phillies are hoping for, or they get bad news on his injury front, it's possible that Abel could still be on the team in the coming months. However, if Andrew Painter comes up when he's expected to, which could be sometime in July, and Nola is healthy, it's tough to find a place for Abel in the rotation. That's why The Athletic recently predicted that they'd cut ties with him, adding that Abel will likely be the Phillies' best trade chip. Jun 10, 2025; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mick Abel (40) throws a pitch during the fourth inning against the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images 'Perhaps the biggest question the Phillies must answer in the next six weeks, James. A lot of it will depend on Aaron Nola's progress from his various injuries. If the Phillies have doubts about his ability to contribute in August and September, it might compel them to keep Abel. But they know Andrew Painter is coming. And, while Abel has pitched well in the majors, I do think he represents their best trade chip,' they wrote. Advertisement There should be many teams interested in a young right-hander who has the stuff Abel does. He was once one of the top prospects in baseball and has proven why in the early stages of his big league career. Phillies Predicted To Target Star RHP To Help Leaky Bullpen
Phillies Predicted To Target Star RHP To Help Leaky Bullpen originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be active at the MLB Trade Deadline as they search to help fix their struggling bullpen. With the 25th-ranked bullpen ERA in all of baseball at 4.64, they are among the worst in baseball. Advertisement Starting pitching and quality bats have kept the team chugging along, powering them to the fifth best record in baseball (46-31), just two games back of the league-leading Detroit Tigers. However, the team is also being projected to look at the MLB Draft as a longer-term solution to their pitching problems. According to Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is expected to target a right-handed pitcher for help. With the 26th overall pick, Callis and Mayo believe the franchise will take Tyler Bremner, a 21-year-old pitcher out of The University of California, Santa Barbara. Advertisement scouting report of Bremner says the pitcher is known for a blazing fastball that touches 98 miles per hour with little effort, and a changeup that keeps hitters guessing. "His best secondary offering is his easily plus changeup that some scouts hang a 70 grade on," the scouting report says. "He'll throw it to any hitter in any count, and it stays on the fastball plane for a long time with late, hard fade." Bremner stands 6'2" and weighs 190 lbs, posting a 3.49 ERA across 77.1 innings this season, a dip from his 2.54 ERA across 88.2 innings in 2024. Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski (left) and manager Rob Thomson (59) (right) watch bullpen sessions spring training workouts at BayCare Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Bremner is ranked as the 14th overall prospect in the draft, so the Phillies nabbing him at 26 would be a steal. 2024 was his first full year as a starting pitcher, while he has also frequently pitched from the bullpen in the past. Advertisement "Bremner dropped in our rankings because of a slow start this spring, but he finished strong and could offer some value and upside at the back of the first round," Callis and Mayo wrote. Once the young pitcher gets work with a professional coaching staff, he could offer some significant upside as a reliever in the near future.
