Peyton Manning credits Jalen Hurts for talking him out of QB rankings discussions

Peyton Manning won't be entertaining QB rankings discussions following a year-old conversation with Jalen Hurts One day, when we're all old and grey, we'll have quite a few stories to tell the grandchildren about great quarterback play. Who knows? Maybe we'll discuss Jalen Hurts with them. Maybe we can, at that time, discuss several Super Bowls he won with the Philadelphia Eagles. It's hard to imagine an NFL career getting off to a more fiery start, unless, of course, we could travel back in time and fix the field at Super Bowl 57. By raising the Vince Lombardi Trophy last February, Jalen made waves by losing his first Super Bowl and getting back to win another one. It isn't something we have seen happen very often. Shout out to John Elway! But, it's Hurts' time now. He's one of the young offensive signal-callers filling a void few thought could be filled, a mammoth-sized hole left by Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Speaking of Peyton Manning... Peyton Manning jokes that Jalen Hurts may have talked him out of the QB rankings business Here's a funny story for those looking for a chuckle. While hanging out at Fanatics Fest in NYC, Peyton joked that he wouldn't be offering a 2025 version of the top five NFL quarterbacks list he shared last season. Last year, when he did the same, he received a call from Jalen Hurts about 20 minutes later asking Manning why the Eagles' quarterback was omitted. There has seemingly been no word about whether or not Jalen and Peyton's conversation added any more fuel for his quest to win Super Bowl 59 last season. Still, based on everything we have learned about Hurts up to this point, we're going to assume it did. We'd also like to thank Manning for any additional comments that he might make about the Eagles' gunslinger in the future. At this point, praise, criticism, oversights, backhanded compliments, and disrespect are all welcome. Oh, and by the way. Did you catch that? Who knew that Hurts had Manning on speed dial and that these two were so friendly? Alabama and Tennessee quarterbacks are hanging out now. Who would have ever guessed?

Ex-Eagles Pro Bowler Shares Truth On Jalen Hurts' Latest Run

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A conversation surrounding Jalen Hurts and his ranking as a top athlete in the city of Philadelphia riled up the Philadelphia Eagles fan base this past week. As a local sports radio station, 94WIP, ranked the top 11 athletes in the market, one host shocked many when Hurts was left off the list. Despite the Pro Bowl quarterback leading his team to a Super Bowl victory and being named the game's MVP just a few months back, Hurts couldn't win over everybody. Not everybody at the station agreed that Hurts should've been left out of the mix. However, a further discussion about whether Hurts' 2024 NFL season was good or great took place on the airwaves earlier this week. When asked the simple question, former Eagles defensive lineman Hugh Douglas took the latter stance. "Jalen didn't start out the season the way we wanted him to. He probably didn't start out the season the way he wanted to, but as the season progressed, Jalen evolved," said the former first-round pick. LANDOVER, MARYLAND - DECEMBER 22: Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles warms up prior to the game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium on December 22, 2024 in Landover, Maryland. "Jalen did what was necessary. It didn't always look pretty, but he got the job done. He was the right man for the job, and he got the job done. So, when you ask me that question in its entirety, 'How was Jalen's season?' I would say it was great. The reason why I would say it was great is because he won the ultimate prize. He won the Super Bowl. He got his team to the Super Bowl, and he was able to win it." Did Jalen Hurts have a good or great 2024 season? — SPORTSRADIO 94WIP (@SportsRadioWIP) June 17, 2025 Looking at the simple numbers, Hurts had his least-productive passing year outside of his rookie season. The veteran quarterback threw for 2,903 yards. He tossed 18 touchdowns and just five interceptions. In the three years leading up to the 2024 NFL season, Hurts averaged 477 passes per season. Last year, he threw just 361 times. Some might use that as an argument to say the Eagles threw less because Hurts couldn't be relied on as much in the passing game. However, it was his most accurate passing year, completing 69 percent of his passes. While key members of the Eagles' offense admitted that the passing game could use some work throughout the year, it was also not utilized as much due to the presence of the MVP-caliber running back, Saquon Barkley. With Barkley putting together a record-breaking season, the Eagles took advantage of his presence. Sometimes, it came at the expense of Hurts' passing. Douglas, a former Pro Bowler, views Hurts' 2024 campaign as a great one. It's not a take that everybody agrees with, but he makes a valid point. 'DJ taking us to the playoffs': Indianapolis Colts' QB Daniel Jones will be trained by Jalen Hurts' offensive head coach

(Image via Getty: Daniel Jones) Jalen Hurts became an unstoppable force in his pursuit of the Super Bowl LIX title. Imagine the same kind of energy entering a different NFL player? Now add to that an open quarterback competition(with Anthony Richardson) - wouldn't it all be too good a story to tell? Too good a player to be? Oh, wait. Add Jalen Hurts' creative offensive head coach, Shane Steichen, to it. And it becomes, 'DJ taking us to the playoffs!' as rightly written by one fan. 28-year-old Indianapolis Colts' newest quarterback, Daniel Jones, is going to take the late Jim Asray's team to the playoffs. But some fans don't believe Daniel Jones can take the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs - they say Jones shines in the offseason but crumbles during the regular season. Everybody looks like a superstar before real games are played, commented one fan for Indianapolis Colts' newest quarterback Daniel Jones An X account shared a video of Daniel Jones' classic QB throw with the caption: 'Daniel Jones leaves and instantly starts throwing nice deep balls I'm done.' Fans commented on that X post with in-chorus reactions: Yeah bro its practice hero season for him. He'll be trash or on a stretcher before September. He aint throwing Darts though Never had an issue with him throwing balls in SPRING PRACTICE like MOST QBs. Its when football actually turns into football thats his bugaboo He does this every offseason. Why we had false hope every year He always looked alright in practice but game time with pass rush he crumbled under the pressure He does this ts every year in camp The problem was never when he was in shorts He always looks solid in practice lol He always did in the off-season program and practice. Games came and he hid in his shell Everybody looks like a superstar before real games are played ! He fooled us 6 seasons in a row think I'm gonna fall for that now lmao He did this with the Giants too. The second it matters he crumbles My dude. Its practice. Danny Jones is the best minicamp qb ever That's cuz it's practice. He did that sh*t for us. Watch if he gets into actual live game action He threw nice deep balls during practice. Also, prior years before the injuries he also threw good deep balls Always threw a nice ball, in practice. his problem is processing under real game speed Always a good 'in shorts' QB Daniel Jones may shine in Indianapolis because their offensive line is better than the one he got in New York On June 19, Jeffri Chadiha of boldly predicted that Daniel Jones would win the Comeback Player of the Year. His reasons? A chance to compete for the starting quarterback position with a third-year veteran, Anthony Richardson. Richardson has been inconsistent ever since he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts. Jones played with quarterback Sam Darnold in the Minnesota Vikings. Creative offensive head coach Shane Steichen, who turned the raw talent of Jalen Hurts into an MVP-caliber quarterback in Philadelphia, would coach Jones in Indianapolis. Steichen could maximize Jones' talent in Indianapolis because he has a better offensive line there as compared to the one he had in New York. Jalen Hurts played a key role in Dallas Goedert returning to the Eagles

Jalen Hurts played a key role in Dallas Goedert returning to the Eagles Dallas Goedert says quarterback Jalen Hurts played an integral role in the tight end reworking his deal to remain with the Philadelphia Eagles Dallas Goedert is one of the longest tenured players on the Eagles roster, and a significant reason for the success Jalen Hurts has enjoyed since taking over as the starter late in the 2020 season. For weeks after the Super Bowl, there was some thought that Goedert would be traded or released, but the tight end agreed to a reworked contract to remain in Philadelphia. Goedert always wanted to stay with the Eagles, but told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Hurts played a "key role" in his return and made him feel like his teammate was wanted. 'He didn't really recruit me back, but he made me feel like I was an important part of the team,' Goedert told The Inquirer on Tuesday. 'I was important to him, and that was obviously a really good feeling.' 'The connection that we have, being able to play with him ever since he became a starter, and I feel like we just grow as a duo each year,' Goedert said. 'I've got so much confidence in him, and I think that's reciprocated the other way, too. Playing with a quarterback that you're comfortable with was also important to me. Someone that values you just makes that even better.' Goedert agreed to a restructured, $10 million deal in early May, guaranteeing his return to Philadelphia for an eighth season. Goedert was due $14.25 million in 2025, with no money guaranteed entering the final year of his deal. The team had trade offers for Goedert during the draft, but he ultimately decided to stay. Goedert missed 17 games to injury over his last four seasons, but when healthy, he is a top-five performer at the position. During the postseason run to the Super Bowl, Goedert led the Eagles with 17 catches for 215 yards and a touchdown. Goedert's run blocking also significantly affected the team's dominance.

Ex-Eagles Linebacker Blasts Jalen Hurts' Massive Snub on List

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Not even a Super Bowl MVP victory could shake Jalen Hurts' biggest doubters. As the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback celebrates his marriage under two months out from training camp, his status as a top athlete in Philadelphia has been a hot topic this week. Popular Philadelphia-based radio station 94WIP recently had hosts put together a list of the top 11 athletes in town currently. One notable host left Hurts off of it entirely, which stirred up a major conversation on Tuesday. Former Eagles linebacker Ike Reese certainly had a lot to say on the matter. "I just don't get it," Reese said of the recent Hurts ranking on the WIP Afternoon Show. "This dude has been able to accomplish something that those other guys have not been able to accomplish. I feel like this is flat-out disrespect." Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium on October 27, 2024 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium on October 27, 2024 in Cincinnati, Eagles landed on the list, with the veteran running back Saquon Barkley leading the pack. Jalen Carter and AJ Brown were ranked third and fourth, while Lane Johnson, Zack Baun, Landon Dickerson, Quinyon Mitchell, and Jordan Mailata filled out spots six through 10. Hurts would've been "probably somewhere" in the range of 15 to 20. "You don't have Jalen Hurts in your top 11 athletes in this city? The guy just won the Super Bowl!" Reese continued. He plays the most critical position, the most scrutinized position, the most difficult position to play because of the scrutiny, because you're never satisfied with what he does at that position. I don't mean him, I mean figuratively, the quarterback position. We're never satisfied unless you win, then this guy goes and wins, and we're still not satisfied! I don't get it." Joe DeCamara leaves Jalen Hurts off of his top 11 current Philly athlete list: 1. Saquon Barkley 2. Bryce Harper 3. Zack Wheeler 4. A.J. Brown 5. Jalen Carter 6. Lane Johnson 7. Zack Baun 8. Landon Dickerson 9. Quinyon Mitchell 10. Jordan Mailata 11. Ranger Suarez 'I would… — SPORTSRADIO 94WIP (@SportsRadioWIP) June 16, 2025 Hurts was far from an NFL MVP contender this time around. When the Eagles first made their Super Bowl run with Hurts under center, he was an MVP favorite until an injury sidelined him for the final couple of weeks. The Eagles made a run to the Super Bowl, and Hurts' team couldn't close it out, despite an MVP-caliber performance from the quarterback. When the Eagles got to the playoffs again in 2025, Hurts' season didn't generate as much fanfare. In the end, it didn't matter from a team standpoint. The Eagles got the job done, and Hurts earned his trip to Disney World after being named the Super Bowl MVP. Considering he accomplished an athlete's ultimate goal in Philadelphia just under one year ago, there's certainly a lot of shock factor behind his exclusion from the list.
