County identifies top crash areas in new plan to eliminate fatalities

Yahoo07-06-2025

After researching transportation trends for the past eight months, the Crawford County Planning Office's new initiative puts the county on the fast track for better safety. Its goal is to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries on county roadways by 2035.
Between 2019 and 2023, the county experienced 3,675 crashes on non-interstate roads with 220 incidents resulting in fatal or serious injuries, according to planning office data. The driving force behind the goal came from the county's current comprehensive plan, adopted in 2024, known as Crawford Inspired.
To improve public health and quality of life in the area, the plan engaged various stakeholders and community members. Residents reported improved pedestrian, biking and road safety as a necessity. Now, the Safety Action Plan (SAP) provides a comprehensive strategy to enhance safety by identifying systemic safety challenges and 10 high-risk areas in the county. Then, it can establish clear implementation strategies.
Crash data from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) revealed that 82 percent of severe crashes in the county occurred on just 16 percent of roadways and interstates, leading to a much more location-focused plan of attack. By identifying the top crash locations — like State Route 18 in Conneaut Lake and State Route 27 in Titusville — the county can develop targeted countermeasures.
Data also showed that speeding and alcohol impairment while driving were among the highest factors of severe crashes, and one group — motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, and horse and buggies — were significantly overrepresented in severe crashes. That data will inform decisions down the road.
'We had a steering committee of 13 individuals including the townships association, boroughs association, CATA [Crawford Area Transportation Authority], folks from PennDOT, Ernst Trail group, the two cities had representation on it and this would allow us to move forward with unlocking some state and federal funding as well as addressing 10 of the most serious/fatal accident locations in Crawford County,' Planning Office Director Zachary Norwood explained to Crawford County commissioners during a work session Wednesday.
Norwood told The Meadville Tribune that the plan is catered to adhere to the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program. Established under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, SS4A must appropriate $5 billion from 2022 to 2026 for regional and local initiatives that prevent roadway fatalities and injuries. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's website, $2 billion of that money remains up for grabs.
'We crafted a plan in alignment with that program to address the concerns and issues we are facing,' Norwood said, noting that there are state programs that they will be eligible for, too. 'We did a plan that will tackle lots of funding streams and give us the tools we need to be successful.'
The road to success begins Wednesday as commissioners vote to adopt the plan and its goal. Then, the county will form an SAP coalition, invest in policy reforms and transportation planning, advance engineering projects, launch and support education and enforcement, and build capacity to implement the SAP through staffing and ensure accountability.

PennDOT: Lane restriction next week on I-78 at I-81 split in Union Twp.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced a lane restriction is scheduled for next Tuesday, June 24, on eastbound Interstate 78 at the Interstate 81 split in Union Township. Weather permitting, officials said, work will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. A right lane restriction will be in place on eastbound I-78 during work hours. "A PennDOT maintenance crew from Lebanon County will provide traffic control," officials said in a release. "Motorists should be alert and drive with caution through the work zone." PennDOT said the restriction will be in place so a contractor can replace a weather information sensor on the roadway. New Pennsylvania license plates featuring Liberty Bell, "Let Freedom Ring" slogan available for order

New Pennsylvania license plate featuring the Liberty Bell is available for order New Pennsylvania license plate featuring the Liberty Bell is available for order New Pennsylvania license plate featuring the Liberty Bell is available for order The Pennsylvania "Let Freedom Ring" license plate unveiled last year is now available across the Commonwealth, Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Tuesday. The design features Philadelphia's iconic Liberty Bell and red, white and blue coloring. It's a nod to the upcoming 250th birthday of the United States in 2026, when the state is set to host several major events, including the NCAA March Madness men's basketball tournament, multiple FIFA World Cup games, the MLB All-Star Game and the NFL Draft in Pittsburgh. About 12,000 drivers who filled out an early interest form have already had their orders filled. PennDOT Shapiro announced the new design was available to everyone in a social media video featuring sports mascots from around the state, from Pittsburgh's Pirate Parrot and Steely McBeam to Gritty and the Phillie Phanatic, opening their personalized plates in the new design. Instructions to order a license plate in the new design are available from PennDOT online. You can also request a personalized plate in the new design. Some partners, such as car dealerships and "online messengers," may still have an inventory of license plates with the old design, and will use up that supply before transitioning to the Liberty Bell version. It'll cost you $13 to make the switch, which is purely your decision, not mandatory. Specialty plates for military and special organizations will be updated with the Liberty Bell design in the coming months. Pennsylvania also added new welcome signs around the state border featuring the Let Freedom Ring design, as part of the "Great American Getaway" marketing campaign for the commonwealth.

Ferrari reportedly delays second EV model to 2028 amid weak demand

-- Ferrari has pushed back the launch of its second fully-electric model from 2026 to at least 2028 due to weak demand for high-performance luxury electric vehicles, according to a Reuters report on Tuesday. The Italian luxury carmaker, famous for its powerful petrol engines, has been selling hybrid models since 2019 and is preparing to unveil its first electric vehicle in a three-stage process beginning in October this year. The world premiere of this first EV is scheduled for spring 2025, with initial customer deliveries expected in October 2026. Ferrari's internal plans had originally included a second EV model for around the end of 2026, but this timeline has now been extended by approximately two years, the report disclosed. It added that "real, sustainable demand is non-existent for an electric sports car." The delay will also provide Ferrari additional time to further develop in-house technology for its second electric vehicle, though lack of market interest remains the primary reason for postponing the launch.
