This should be England's World Cup team after Senegal abomination

Telegraph11-06-2025

This time next year England will (hopefully) be preparing for the World Cup in the heat of the United States, Mexico and Canada. There are qualifiers to be won, but Thomas Tuchel's team should be there – despite two awful performances in the last four days.
Whether they progress to the latter stages of the tournament is another matter. Tuchel still looks a way off finding out his best team – and has completely failed to get them to click so far. With a year to go, this is the starting line-up he should put out when the World Cup kicks off.
Formation: 4-1-4-1
Goalkeeper
Dean Henderson deserved his chance against Senegal after the season he had with Crystal Palace, which ended with an FA Cup triumph. Tuchel has made it clear that Jordan Pickford was 'slightly ahead' in the No 1 race, but he is getting pushed hard by Henderson and James Trafford. Trafford had a long break after promotion from the Championship with Burnley, so was not used in these matches. But there is time for him to mount a challenge.
Verdict: Jordan Pickford
Right-back
We can say with confidence that it will not be Kyle Walker, judging by the drop-off in performances last season and the way Ismaila Sarr got ahead of him for Senegal's equaliser at the City Ground. Roy Keane, working as a pundit on ITV, called it 'lazy' defending. But Tuchel does not seem decided on this position. Reece James and Curtis Jones have also started there under the German. Trent Alexander-Arnold was bizarrely overlooked for starts in the last two games and his defensive weaknesses were highlighted by Tuchel. But he is now a galactico and surely commands a place in the line-up.
Right centre-back
Ezri Konsa should be a starter at the World Cup. He played at the Euros when Sir Gareth Southgate went for a three-man defence against Switzerland and he has started in the first three of Thomas Tuchel's games. In fact, his late block against Andorra ensured that England avoided the worst result in their history. Trevoh Chalobah was given a chance against Senegal but was beaten by Nicolas Jackson as his Chelsea team-mate set up the equaliser before the break.
Verdict: Ezri Konsa
Left centre-back
Not as straightforward as it seems. Marc Guéhi was an automatic choice for Southgate at the Euros, but surprisingly left out of Tuchel's first match in charge. He has missed these summer matches through an eye injury suffered in the FA Cup final, but will challenge for a place next season. Levi Colwill's distribution was poor at times against Senegal, while Dan Burn really struggled against Andorra. John Stones should be a starter if fit.
Verdict: John Stones
Left-back
Luke Shaw's injury record last season means he cannot be relied upon to be fit this time next year. Ben Chilwell was also out of favour at Chelsea and is still trying to find regular football. So left-back does not have the options that it once did. Myles Lewis-Skelly has started three of Tuchel's games, but his inexperience may count against him for a starting place. Trying Reece James against Andorra was an interesting move from Tuchel and allows England to shift into a back three when they are dominating games.
Verdict: Reece James
Defensive central midfield
After his free-kicks in the Champions League, we can add set-pieces to the threat that Declan Rice poses. His box-to-box running will be so important to the way England play next summer. But he also has to be disciplined to hold his position when necessary and allow others freedom. Conor Gallagher was tried against Senegal, while Jordan Henderson played against Andorra.
Verdict: Declan Rice
Right wing
Only injury has prevented Bukayo Saka from featuring more under Tuchel. The Arsenal forward, who was in the leadership group under Southgate, is an important part of England's attack and Tuchel will be praying for an injury-free season. Anthony Gordon still looks like he has work to do to convince Tuchel of a starting place.
Verdict: Bukayo Saka
Attacking midfield
There should be a place for Adam Wharton but Tuchel has yet to have a look at the Crystal Palace midfielder, who went to the Euros last year. It means there is not much time for Wharton to force his way in. Without him, there is no obvious candidate in a deeper role alongside Rice. But this allows Tuchel to get more No 10s in his team and Jude Bellingham is one player who is guaranteed a start.
Verdict: Jude Bellingham
Attacking midfield
Tuchel pointed out that Cole Palmer's form for Chelsea has not been great recently. Should we be expecting something different for England? He is the nation's great hope as a creative player who can unlock a defence. While comfortable on the flank, he has been a No 10 this season at Chelsea. Morgan Rogers has been pushing for a place under Tuchel, who clearly likes the way the Aston Villa midfielder tested himself in the Champions League. Morgan Gibbs-White looks further down the pecking order, despite a decent cameo against Senegal.
Verdict: Cole Palmer
Left wing
Eberechi Eze is staking a claim for a place in the team. He is versatile, playing from full-back through to centre-forward during his England career. Tuchel started him up front with Harry Kane in a 4-4-2 against Senegal. But Marcus Rashford is expected to mount another challenge for a starting berth, having forced his way back into the England set-up in March. He looks like spending another year away from Manchester United and another season determined to prove them wrong, like he did at Aston Villa.
Striker
Only one choice here. Harry Kane will start at the World Cup next year barring injury. Yes, Tuchel says he will look at the heat and whether it will be a factor with the England captain – but there are no doubts over his place in the line-up. Ivan Toney was given just three minutes – plus stoppage-time – over the last two games, so Tuchel is not thinking of him as a back-up option. Liam Delap could come into contention, but Kane will lead the line.

Galal Yafai reveals beatdowns he took from his older champion brothers knocked him into the fighter he is today

GALAL YAFAI reveals the beatdowns he took from his champion older brothers knocked him into the fighter he is today. Yafai grew up as the youngest boxer in the household and admits it was constant civil war at home older siblings Gamal and Kal. 4 4 4 He told SunSport: "My mum would come in screaming and shouting, we'd always end up fighting but I knew my place when you're like ten years old or nine years old. "Two-three years is a big difference. When they were 13-14 years old and I'm only just 10, it's a big jump. So yeah, I knew my position. I used to get beaten up on a little bit!" Despite taking his fair share of brotherly blows, Yafai admits the real wars came between Kal and Gamal. He said: "They were closer in age and I think they felt sorry for me a little bit because I was a little bit smaller than them. "They had the real big fights and my mum used to come out shouting and it was kind of like hillbilly style. It kind of helped us to get where we got to. "Kal was always better than me, Gamal was always bigger and better so I don't think I ever got the better of everyone really. "I could hold my own, well I could hold my own when I got a bit older, but I think they took it easy on me. "But they always helped me anyway, it helped in my career." Yafai trained as a teenager and watched his older brothers become amateur champions - later replicating that success in the professional ranks. The youngest of the pack only began boxing again at 18 but by 2021 he was on the Olympic champion after packing in his job working in a Land Rover factory. Boxing icon Tyson Fury spotted posing topless in Scots town as he chats with locals Now he is undefeated and 9-0 as a pro - meanwhile ex-world champ Kal, 36, is retired and Gamal, 33, now coaches the younger generation. But Yafai - who returns on Saturday against Francisco Rodriguez Jr in a bid to earn a shot at WBC and WBO champ Kenshiro Teraji - doubts brother Gamal will be part of his corner team - preferring he remains just a fan for now. He said: "My coach Rob McCracken sorts all that out and I just like my brothers being there. They help me just being there and showing me support and having my back. "My brother Kal's been in my corner before as like a second in America. But as long as Rob's in my corner and my brothers are there supporting me, yeah, I'm happy." 4

South Korea's K-League to lift 26-year-old ban on foreign goalkeepers

June 21 (Reuters) - K-League clubs will be allowed to register foreign players as goalkeepers for the first time in 27 years, starting with the 2026 season, the South Korean top division league said. The league banned its clubs from registering foreign players as keepers in 1999, when it had eight teams, in a bid to ensure domestic keepers get enough playing time. The K-League 1 now has 12 teams, with a second tier introduced in 2013. The decision to end the ban on foreign keepers was taken at a board meeting on Thursday, the league said in a statement on Friday. "The board said it took into consideration the fact that foreign players were restricted from registering as goalkeepers, a specialised position, resulting in excessive salary increases for domestic players compared to field players," it added. "The number of clubs has increased significantly since the time the foreign goalkeeper restriction was introduced, so even if foreign goalkeepers were allowed, domestic goalkeepers would still have enough playing time. "As a result, from 2026, the K-League will remove the stipulation that the goalkeeper must be a domestic player from the K-League's competition guidelines, which will apply to both the K-League 1 and K-League 2."

Canelo Alvarez reveals why Terence Crawford is BETTER than Floyd Mayweather… but vows to learn from infamous loss

CANELO ALVAREZ believes Terence Crawford is a BETTER fighter than Floyd Mayweather - the man who handed him his first-ever loss. The Mexican superstar was outclassed over 12 rounds by undefeated great Mayweather in 2013 - while only 23 years old. 3 Fast forward 12 years and Canelo once again faces another undefeated American in Las Vegas - this time Crawford. The mega-fight - streamed on Netflix on September 13 - has drawn comparisons between Canelo's fight with Mayweather over a decade ago. But he said: "I think Crawford is better than Mayweather because he turns his guard to both sides, he's more intelligent. "I think he's better than Floyd Mayweather. That's what I think." Canelo bounced back from defeat to Mayweather - who retired at 50-0 in 2017 - to carve out a Hall of Fame career. But the harrowing points loss is not the the only reason four-division champion Canelo improved so vastly. He said: "I learned in every single fight not just in the Mayweather fight but I learned everything and for every fight. "I'm gonna put all my experience there because I'm gonna need it." 3 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Canelo, 34, defends the super-middleweight titles he regained by beating Cuban William Scull, 32, in May in Riyadh. Crawford, 37, meanwhile returns for the first time since beating Israil Madrimov, 30, last August to win the 154lb WBA title. Terence Crawford says there is 'nothing' Canelo Alvarez can do to beat him.. He is unbeaten at 41-0 having won belts from lightweight to super-welterweight - now attempting to become undisputed champ at THREE weights. And Canelo admitted: "He can use both guards. He can do everything he can counterpunch, move around, he's a complete fighter. "He's gonna be a difficult fight but you know it's nothing new for me." 3
