Silva's impact on Chelsea youngsters still visible with Chukwuemeka reunion
Thiago Silva may have joined Chelsea in the twilight of his career as a 35-year-old in 2020, but his impact over the four seasons he spent at Stamford Bridge is still visibly impressing for Fluminense in their Club World Cup opener against Borussia Dortmund, Silva shared a moment with Dortmund's Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka on the pitch at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey."My boy, how good to see you mate. I love you," Silva posted on his Instagram, external story along with a picture of the two embracing. Chukwuemeka and the Brazil legend spent two seasons together between 2022 and may turn 41 in September but his incredible durability was on full display against Dortmund. He captained Fluminense and showed all of his quality and experience in an immaculate performance to secure a clean sheet in the 0-0 was not the only young Chelsea player to benefit from playing alongside him in the latter years of his career in West London, in which he made 155 appearances and won the Champions League, Club World Cup and Super Silva's departure from Stamford Bridge, Reece James - now Blues captain - labelled him, external "A true brother" and "One of the best players to play the game and an even better person".Fellow defenders Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah both credit the seven-time French Champion with helping their careers. Colwill has spoken of the impact, external of playing alongside Silva after basing his game on him while growing up and Chalobah commented "idolo" - Portuguese for idol or hero - under one of his final Instagram posts, external as a Chelsea any in Enzo Maresca's young squad need inspiration or motivation to progress in their careers, a fine starting point would be to tune in to Fluminense's remaining games in the United States - and keep a particular eye on their number three.

Why Club World Cup could be transformative for a new Chelsea
Thomas Tuchel was musing about the knock-on effect of the Club World Cup on next season's title race. 'I think it will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there,' he said. What Tuchel did not mention is that Chelsea, disadvantaged as a result, qualified for the Club World Cup because of him. It feels a very different era given that Enzo Maresca is the fifth man to manage them since – Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor, Frank Lampard and Mauricio Pochettino are the others – and that Reece James is the only player to take the field in Tuchel's 2021 Champions League final victory who is in the squad they have taken to the United States. Indeed, if some of the others get winners' medals in July, it will mean Chelsea have not done a unique double of the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup. Their Champions League-winning captain Cesar Azpilicueta is at Atletico Madrid now, Antonio Rudiger at Real. At 40, Thiago Silva will be in the Fluminense defence. Jorginho completed a move to Flamengo in time to play for his new club against his old one. Olivier Giroud, on the bench for Chelsea in 2021, could occupy a similar role for Los Angeles FC now, perhaps emerging to score against the Blues. Mateo Kovacic would have been in the Manchester City squad but for injury. The Chelsea that qualified for the Club World Cup had a different manager, different players, different owner and, in many ways, was a different club. They were, at least, serial winners whereas the Conference League represented a belated first trophy of the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital era. It has been a time of permanent change, inventive accounting, big numbers and new theories. Perhaps, then, the Club World Cup is perfect for the new Chelsea, a parable of them. Certainly the revenues – a guarantee of over £30m, the possibility of more than £100m if Chelsea actually win it – could represent that latest lever they pull to pass PSR. This time, they will not need to sell any hotels or the women's team to themselves. Perhaps, too, it could be transformative on the pitch. Chelsea are one of the two Premier League representatives in the tournament. They have not been close to being among the two best under their current ownership, even if finishes of 12th, sixth and fourth at least represent the right direction of travel after the hubristic failure of their debut campaign. They have not faced the European elite since the 2023 Champions League quarter-finals when Boehly predicted a 3-0 win over Real at the Bernabeu. Chelsea instead lost 2-0, a result they repeated at home. Now a group with LAFC, Flamengo and ES Tunis could offer comparisons with the Conference League. Come second and they could be plunged into a last-16 meeting with Bayern Munich. Win the pool and there is a potential quarter-final against the new European champions Paris Saint-Germain, conquerors of four Premier League sides this season, in what would be a barometer of progress. But, Chelsea being Chelsea, they are also in permanent transition. Maresca's squad was notable for the omission of some of the higher-profile signings made in the current regime, in Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix, and one of Tuchel's Champions League winners, in Ben Chilwell, but also features four new signings. It would have been at least six if they had got their way. Jamie Gittens is instead in the Borussia Dortmund squad, along with the Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka, after a bid for the winger was rejected. Mike Maignan remains at AC Milan after Chelsea's belated attempt to sign a world-class goalkeeper failed; for now, anyway. So the potential debutant goalkeeper is Mike Penders, the teenager who excelled for Genk. The three players bought this summer are Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, who may be a deputy for Moises Caicedo and who has been given Felix's squad number, and Liam Delap. The £30m battering ram could assume the most importance and looks the likeliest starter. It could be a preview of next season's contest between Delap and Nicolas Jackson for the striker's spot. Another intriguing arrival is the returning Andrey Santos, who excelled on loan for Strasbourg; as Chelsea have accumulated young players, he may prove one of the few who has benefited from their ravenous approach to recruitment and quixotic attitude to player development. Go back to 2021 and Tuchel's team who won the Champions League were underpinned by experience. Now the default plan is to buy young; it sometimes involves agreeing deals long before players arrive. Chelsea bought Estevao Willian last summer. The teenager winger will finish his Palmeiras career in the Club World Cup before moving to England. And Palmeiras are also possible quarter-final opponents for Chelsea, along with Azpilicueta's Atletico. As is often the case, Chelsea's past, present and future are colliding.

This should be England's World Cup team after Senegal abomination
This time next year England will (hopefully) be preparing for the World Cup in the heat of the United States, Mexico and Canada. There are qualifiers to be won, but Thomas Tuchel's team should be there – despite two awful performances in the last four days. Whether they progress to the latter stages of the tournament is another matter. Tuchel still looks a way off finding out his best team – and has completely failed to get them to click so far. With a year to go, this is the starting line-up he should put out when the World Cup kicks off. Formation: 4-1-4-1 Goalkeeper Dean Henderson deserved his chance against Senegal after the season he had with Crystal Palace, which ended with an FA Cup triumph. Tuchel has made it clear that Jordan Pickford was 'slightly ahead' in the No 1 race, but he is getting pushed hard by Henderson and James Trafford. Trafford had a long break after promotion from the Championship with Burnley, so was not used in these matches. But there is time for him to mount a challenge. Verdict: Jordan Pickford Right-back We can say with confidence that it will not be Kyle Walker, judging by the drop-off in performances last season and the way Ismaila Sarr got ahead of him for Senegal's equaliser at the City Ground. Roy Keane, working as a pundit on ITV, called it 'lazy' defending. But Tuchel does not seem decided on this position. Reece James and Curtis Jones have also started there under the German. Trent Alexander-Arnold was bizarrely overlooked for starts in the last two games and his defensive weaknesses were highlighted by Tuchel. But he is now a galactico and surely commands a place in the line-up. Right centre-back Ezri Konsa should be a starter at the World Cup. He played at the Euros when Sir Gareth Southgate went for a three-man defence against Switzerland and he has started in the first three of Thomas Tuchel's games. In fact, his late block against Andorra ensured that England avoided the worst result in their history. Trevoh Chalobah was given a chance against Senegal but was beaten by Nicolas Jackson as his Chelsea team-mate set up the equaliser before the break. Verdict: Ezri Konsa Left centre-back Not as straightforward as it seems. Marc Guéhi was an automatic choice for Southgate at the Euros, but surprisingly left out of Tuchel's first match in charge. He has missed these summer matches through an eye injury suffered in the FA Cup final, but will challenge for a place next season. Levi Colwill's distribution was poor at times against Senegal, while Dan Burn really struggled against Andorra. John Stones should be a starter if fit. Verdict: John Stones Left-back Luke Shaw's injury record last season means he cannot be relied upon to be fit this time next year. Ben Chilwell was also out of favour at Chelsea and is still trying to find regular football. So left-back does not have the options that it once did. Myles Lewis-Skelly has started three of Tuchel's games, but his inexperience may count against him for a starting place. Trying Reece James against Andorra was an interesting move from Tuchel and allows England to shift into a back three when they are dominating games. Verdict: Reece James Defensive central midfield After his free-kicks in the Champions League, we can add set-pieces to the threat that Declan Rice poses. His box-to-box running will be so important to the way England play next summer. But he also has to be disciplined to hold his position when necessary and allow others freedom. Conor Gallagher was tried against Senegal, while Jordan Henderson played against Andorra. Verdict: Declan Rice Right wing Only injury has prevented Bukayo Saka from featuring more under Tuchel. The Arsenal forward, who was in the leadership group under Southgate, is an important part of England's attack and Tuchel will be praying for an injury-free season. Anthony Gordon still looks like he has work to do to convince Tuchel of a starting place. Verdict: Bukayo Saka Attacking midfield There should be a place for Adam Wharton but Tuchel has yet to have a look at the Crystal Palace midfielder, who went to the Euros last year. It means there is not much time for Wharton to force his way in. Without him, there is no obvious candidate in a deeper role alongside Rice. But this allows Tuchel to get more No 10s in his team and Jude Bellingham is one player who is guaranteed a start. Verdict: Jude Bellingham Attacking midfield Tuchel pointed out that Cole Palmer's form for Chelsea has not been great recently. Should we be expecting something different for England? He is the nation's great hope as a creative player who can unlock a defence. While comfortable on the flank, he has been a No 10 this season at Chelsea. Morgan Rogers has been pushing for a place under Tuchel, who clearly likes the way the Aston Villa midfielder tested himself in the Champions League. Morgan Gibbs-White looks further down the pecking order, despite a decent cameo against Senegal. Verdict: Cole Palmer Left wing Eberechi Eze is staking a claim for a place in the team. He is versatile, playing from full-back through to centre-forward during his England career. Tuchel started him up front with Harry Kane in a 4-4-2 against Senegal. But Marcus Rashford is expected to mount another challenge for a starting berth, having forced his way back into the England set-up in March. He looks like spending another year away from Manchester United and another season determined to prove them wrong, like he did at Aston Villa. Striker Only one choice here. Harry Kane will start at the World Cup next year barring injury. Yes, Tuchel says he will look at the heat and whether it will be a factor with the England captain – but there are no doubts over his place in the line-up. Ivan Toney was given just three minutes – plus stoppage-time – over the last two games, so Tuchel is not thinking of him as a back-up option. Liam Delap could come into contention, but Kane will lead the line.
