Heat map: Extreme heat forecast for New Mexico through the weekend

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Doña Ana County through Monday, June 17.
Southern New Mexico and portions of West Texas will experience highs of 104 to 108 over the weekend, with the hottest temperatures expected Sunday and Monday.

In its forecast, NWS El Paso station said those living in Luna and Doña Ana County and portions of West Texas should drink plenty of fluids and stay indoors and out of the sun.
The New Mexico Department of Health issued its own advice:
'Heat illness is preventable, but it takes planning, awareness and very quick action,' said Chelsea Eastman Langer, PhD, MPH, bureau chief of Environmental Health Epidemiology Bureau at NMDOH. 'Protect yourself and others when it's hot outside by staying cool, staying hydrated and knowing the symptoms.'
Those symptoms can include nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps, tiredness or weakness, headache and dizziness.
It also warned of the danger of leaving pets and children outside or in vehicles during the hottest part of the day.

Once it makes its way over to the East Coast, the feel-like temperature will exceed 100 degrees. "By Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, it starts to slide towards the east. New York City and Philadelphia haven't had an actual air temperature of 100 in 13 years," ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee said. "We're going to get close. The forecast is around 99 [degrees] for New York, but it's going to feel like 107 [degrees]." Although this extreme heat wave hasn't made impact just yet, Americans are already extending kind thoughts to those on the East Coast. "This heat wave can just go. I hope you all stay safe," one person wrote on X. "Heat wave is on the horizon," a second person said. "Be safe, and remember to check in on your neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled." "If you live in America and you're experiencing the extreme heat wave we are in right now if you have animals PLEASE make sure you're checking the concrete before letting them on if. if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them," another person noted. "Yikes, that heat index is no joke! Stay safe out there," a fourth person wrote. Other parts of the country will also face similar issues due to the high heat. Heat alerts have been issued from Colorado to Maine, including more than 150 million Americans. Heat index values in the Midwest will soar into the triple digits this afternoon, with some areas experiencing feels-like temperatures closer to 105-110 degrees. The extreme heat could be life-threatening. The heat begins expanding east on Sunday with highs soaring into the 90s from the Great Lakes to southern New England. Part of Northern California under red flag warning

A red flag warning is now in effect for part of Northern California, the National Weather Service said. Winds between 10 to 20 mph, and gusts of up to 30 to 40 mph are contributing to the fire weather conditions, along with low relative humidity, the NWS said. The warning stretches from Redding to Modesto, and the NWS said the areas under the highest threat are the Sacramento Valley along and west of the Interstate 5 corridor, the adjacent coastal range and the northern San Joaquin Valley. A Red Flag Warning goes into effect today at 11am for areas below 3000 ft and continues through 9am Sunday. Expect gusty north winds and low relative humidities. PG&E has a power shutoff warning in effect for Sunday as well.
