Plymouth Argyle issue cryptic response to shock Gareth Bale takeover links

Plymouth Argyle issue cryptic response to shock Gareth Bale takeover links The Welsh football great is reportedly part of a consortium bidding to take over the League One side Gareth Bale (Image: PA Wire ) Plymouth Argyle chief executive Andrew Parkinson has refused to rule out reports linking Gareth Bale with a sensational move into football club ownership, describing the former Real Madrid star's involvement in a takeover bid as "speculation" at this stage. Stories first published by The Telegraph earlier this week claimed that a United States-based private equity group, fronted by Bale and involving members of the Storch family, was in discussions to purchase full control of the League One club. However, Parkinson was quick to dampen the excitement surrounding the links when questioned at new head coach Tom Cleverley's unveiling at Home Park on Thursday. ‌ 'That was really speculation,' Parkinson said. ‌ 'You would expect me to say that we are not in a position to be able to talk about any individuals or any investors, but of course when we have got the opportunity to do that we will do.' While neither confirming nor directly denying contact with Bale's consortium, Parkinson reiterated majority owner Simon Hallett's long-standing openness to external investment. Hallett revealed on May 31 that a year-long negotiation with a potential investor had collapsed, and that the club continues to seek the right partners for sustainable long-term growth. Article continues below 'I think Simon has said this numerous times, it's about getting the right people to be involved in the club for the long term,' Parkinson added. 'Simon and the other shareholders have committed for this season to do that and provide the right finances across the board. We will continue discussions for the long term.' The latest reports placed Bale as the public face of the American-led group and suggested he could even assume a chairman-style role if the bid succeeded—mirroring the involvement of former teammate Luka Modric, now a minority shareholder at Swansea City. ‌ The Welshman has been out of football since confirming his retirement back in January 2023, shortly after leading his side into the World Cup in Qatar, where they were unfortunately eliminated in the group stages. He finished his club career in the US playing for Los Angeles FC and still spends a lot of time in America. Other celebrity names below the Premier League include NFL legend Tom Brady, who purchased a stake in Birmingham City before they won promotion back to the Championship last season. Meanwhile, American golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas snapped up shares in Leeds United before the club sealed their return to the Premier League. ‌ Bale has no previous connection to Plymouth, and the move would clearly come as a huge surprise, although a takeover of the Pilgrims has seemingly been on the cards for some time. Argyle's leadership, however, appear to be keen to keep expectations in check as they attempt to stabilise after a turbulent 18 months that have included five head coaches and relegation from the Championship. Parkinson said the club remains focused on bouncing back under new boss Cleverley, while also building a more robust foundation behind the scenes. ‌ 'This is about the long term,' he said. 'It's about how we grow as a football club, how we develop, how we bring players on. We want long-term growth, not just going up and down.' For Bale, whose retirement in early 2023 ended a glittering playing career—including five Champions League titles and stints with Spurs, Real Madrid and LAFC—the links to Argyle mark the latest twist in his post-football evolution. While he's since built a profile as a businessman and pundit, a role in club ownership would represent a significant step into football's boardroom. Article continues below Whether that step will come at Home Park remains to be seen. For now, Plymouth are staying tight-lipped—and Bale's potential leap from superstar to chairman remains just that: potential.

Community pub developed from old school in Perth and Kinross opens

The CornerStone Rannoch will officially open on Sunday, June 22. Formerly known as The Hub, the community-owned bar and restaurant will welcome the Kinloch Rannoch community in for a sneak peak on Saturday afternoon before officially opening to the wider public from 10am on Sunday. Back in September 2022, Rannoch Community Trust was granted planning permission to develop an £830,000 community hub in a former outdoors centre and school. READ MORE: SNP MSP Fergus Ewing to stand as independent at next Scottish Parliament election The consent was branded a 'major milestone' as the trust then sought to secure the remainder of the funding needed to complete the project at the Victorian building on Allt Mor Place. Originally built as the village school in 1840, it closed when a new school was opened in Kinloch Rannoch in 1965. In the 1980s it was transformed into a residential outdoors centre until Perth and Kinross Council deemed it 'surplus to requirement' and closed it in 2019. In July 2020, Perth and Kinross councillors voted to sell the former outdoors centre for £75,000 to Rannoch Community Trust to transform it into a multi-purpose facility for the community. A year later – in July 2021 – ownership of the building and grounds was legally transferred from Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) to Rannoch Community Trust. (Image: The CornerStone) Planning permission for the trust to develop it into a community-owned bar/restaurant was granted in September 2022, under delegated powers. The CornerStone features a social enterprise café/bar, manager's accommodation, office space, a meeting room, an outdoor seating area, new footbridge and a playpark. It will be run by a mixture of both paid and volunteer staff. The building was designed by Perth-based Studio East Architects to be 'as energy efficient as possible'. A spokesperson for The CornerStone said: 'Initially, we will be serving drinks only, until we hook a great chef onboard, so until then you can enjoy local beers on tap and so much more, we can't wait to host you in the heart of our village.' (Image: The CornerStone) There is also a meeting room with WiFi. The spokesperson added: 'Our flexible workspaces catering to groups or individuals is also now available to book: Work — The Cornerstone 'Our new website offers lots of information you might be interested in, so please feel free to take a look around there, or pop in to say hello, we'll be proud to give you a warm welcome.' Highland Perthshire ward councillor John Duff is delighted and said it looks 'fabulous'. The Conservative councillor said: 'I am delighted that the aspirations of the community have been achieved and that it will soon have this excellent venue for locals and visitors to come together, relax and socialise. 'The conversion of the former outdoor centre looks fabulous and I applaud the continued efforts of the community to deliver this exceptional facility providing food, drink, meeting and work space. I look forward to visiting the CornerStone myself in the near future.' Rannoch Community Trust was awarded £134,660 from the Scottish Government's Scottish Land Fund Award to cover the purchase of the building, legal expenses and essential repairs. It also received £250,000 from the UK Government's Community Ownership Fund and £308,000 from the Scottish Government's Place Based Investment Programme, which is aimed at supporting community-led regeneration.

Arne Slot warned Isak isn't easy as Newcastle coaches 'hold private talks'

Liverpool have been linked with another record-breaking transfer for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, with Arne Slot being told the formula for getting the best out of the Sweden international Arne Slot has been given clear instructions on how to maximise Alexander Isak's potential if Liverpool break the bank for the Newcastle striker this summer. It is understood that the Swedish striker needs specific man-management techniques in order to play to his full potential, something Newcastle coaches have managed to do by regularly holding private discussions. Isak, 25, has emerged as one of the Premier League's standout forwards during his three-year stint on Tyneside. He boasts an impressive goal-scoring record with the Magpies, netting 62 goals in 109 appearances across all competitions, while his scintillating form this season included 27 goals and six assists. ‌ That has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including the Reds, who have already shown their ambition in the transfer market this summer. Arne Slot has secured the signings of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz for £29.5million and a British transfer record-breaking £116m, respectively, with the latter set to join his former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate at Kirkby. ‌ Give Me Sport reports that Liverpool may be prepared to break the transfer record for a second time in the same window in order to land Isak, who Newcastle have valued at a whopping £150m. Isak has been described as Slot's 'dream' signing this summer and is widely regarded as a complete player. Yet, a deep dive into the player's mindset by The Athletic earlier this year revealed that the responsibility lies with the coaching staff at Newcastle to bring out the best in the Swede. The report stated that Isak needs to be kept "stimulated" to truly unlock his potential. The Newcastle coaching staff are said to hold regular discussions, constantly brainstorming ways to push him to reach new heights at the right time - only then can they reap the benefits of his lofty potential. From the moment he joined the Magpies, Isak's raw talent was undeniable, and the club never questioned his ability. According to insiders, Newcastle coaches felt he needed time to adapt to the Premier League, a process that is still ongoing, though a former staff member described him as having "uncoachable raw ingredients". Those who have worked with Isak say he "needs to be constantly challenged" and thrives on "creative work", given his creative playing style. Eddie Howe and his staff set targets for Isak to reach, something he reportedly enjoys as it keeps him engaged. An anonymous source who has worked closely with Isak was quoted saying: "There isn't a ceiling to what he can achieve," explaining why he is such a sought-after player and why Newcastle are determined not to let him go this summer. ‌ There's no question that Slot, who transformed a Liverpool squad that finished third the previous season into comfortable league winners with just one outfield addition, possesses the tactical acumen and man-management skills to push Isak to new levels. Although it's not entirely out of the question that Liverpool could top their £116m Wirtz bid to secure Isak's transfer to Anfield, reports indicate the Reds are more likely to submit an offer of around £100m. ‌ This is £16m less than Wirtz's fee and significantly lower than Newcastle's £150m valuation, which the northeast club can demand due to Isak's three-year contract. However, one factor that could work in Liverpool's favour is if Newcastle successfully sign Brighton's Brazilian star Joao Pedro, valued at £60m-£70m. According to talkSPORT, Newcastle's stance on Isak might soften if they bring in Pedro.
