Waitrose to open full-line supermarket in north Bristol in 2027

British grocery retailer Waitrose is to build a new full-line supermarket at Brabazon, in the north of the city of Bristol, which is expected to open in 2027. It is part of the £4bn ($5.3bn) investment plan for YTL Corporation developments up to 2030s the UK. The 30,000ft² store, the first such supermarket in seven years, will create 150 new jobs. The new supermarket will be situated on the A38 Gloucester Road, serving as the gateway to Brabazon and located 500m from a new train station expected to open in 2026. The retailer will occupy the ground floor of a seven-storey office building designed by AHR architects and will have a multi-storey car park with 1,500 spaces. Waitrose is expanding its presence across the UK. As well as the Brabazon store, new outlets include a convenience store in The Arches, Bristol, and franchise expansions with Welcome Break in Spaldwick, Cambridgeshire and Rotherham. Two more stores will open at Welcome Break service areas in Hickling, Leicestershire, and Newark, Nottinghamshire, in summer 2025. Waitrose managing director James Bailey stated: 'We are moving up a gear in store investment as we open in new locations and modernise our existing estate to bring the quality, service and value that customers love about Waitrose closer to more people.' More than 20 Waitrose stores will be refurbished in 2025, nearly doubling the previous year's number. These refurbs are part of a broader strategy to invest £1bn over three years in new stores and enhancements to 150 existing locations, affecting almost half of the retailer's estate. Built on the historic Filton Airfield, Brabazon is being developed by YTL Developments into a new urban district. Bailey continued: 'Brabazon is one of the most exciting new city districts in the UK, driving the growth of one of the UK's most vibrant and successful regional economies. Partnering with YTL Developments at Brabazon underlines our ambition and the opportunity we believe we have to grow our reach.' In March 2025, Waitrose introduced a £500,000 fund to help its network of British farmers reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Heston Blumenthal sheds tears as son says: 'Talking to you was horrible'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I ended up becoming a hamster on a wheel, and I self-medicated with cocaine.' These were the words that Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal used to describe his rapid rise to fame in the year 2006 after he was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List. 'My name became a brand. I had a range of foods in Waitrose, I had a range of barbecues, I had a range of kitchen equipment. Everything was going at full throttle,' he explained. But despite the staggering success that he had become, eating away at him from the inside was a then unknown bipolar diagnosis, which is the subject of a new BBC documentary that has been released today. Speaking from inside his home in Provence, France, the 59-year-old culinary genius sheds light on his experience being sectioned by police in November 2023 after he suffered a mental breakdown. On top of this, he tries to understand the social and medical stigma around being bipolar. But in a truly heartbreaking conversation with his son Jack, Heston learns the true extent of his disorder and how much of an impact it has had on his family. After meeting with bipolar experts and other people who suffer from the disorder, Heston decides to visit his eldest son, Jack, who now runs the award-winning Ginger Wings restaurant in Marlow. During a brutal and honest conversation, his son explains how difficult it was to speak with Heston during his childhood. Speaking about his disorder, he says: 'We found it difficult as a family… It's nice now to have… not a label on it, but something we can refer back to, to say he wasn't just being a d**k. Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition where you have extreme mood changes. These shifts can range from periods of intense energy and euphoria (mania or hypomania) to periods of profound sadness and hopelessness (depression). Formerly known as manic depression, medicines and talking therapy can help manage it. 'We just wanted a relaxing conversation with our dad, and we weren't allowed. 'You didn't want to know anyone's thoughts, I don't think you gave a s**t. 'You would just talk over us and say I'm going to do this, that and that, and I'm going to change the world. 'It would always start quite well for a few minutes, but then I had to walk away from you sometimes.' Jack went on to say: 'Every time we had to psyche ourselves up to come and see you. We'd plan it three weeks in advance just to see you for half an hour. It was horrible and it was constant and there was nothing I could do to help you.' As Heston begins to wipe away tears, he replies by saying: 'Me being bipolar is damaging the people I love.' After saying he is 'so sorry', Jack forgives his father before saying 'I love you' and the two share an emotional embrace. Elsewhere in the feature-length documentary, Heston explains how one day he woke up to find himself in a French mental hospital. Following this, he now has to take numerous different pills to balance his serotonin levels. However, according to Heston, he is fearful that the medication could affect his creativity, like in the past when he curated dishes such as sardine sorbet, snail porridge and bacon and egg ice cream at his award-winning restaurant The Fat Duck. Discussing his cocaine abuse, which he claims was a way of self-medicating his bipolar disorder, Heston explained how on one of his cooking shows his mind 'was hollow' and he would lie on the floor listening to meditation videos in between gaps in filming. 'I wondered if there was a gun here, would I use it, but there wasn't,' he revealed. 'Then I thought, are there other ways of ending it. Then I decided I wasn't ready for that. But it all went through my head.' On top of his depression, Heston also explained how he would have bizarre thoughts, such as that he could provide clean drinking water to the entire world. More Trending Earlier this year, he opened up about some of the symptoms he experienced from having bipolar disorder, including thinking that the TV was 'talking to him'. Appearing on BBC Breakfast, he told presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty about his experiences. 'One of the classic symptoms of bipolar is you can start hallucinating things, so I hallucinated a gun on the table. I was talking about suicide. So you have suicidal thoughts,' he said while sitting on the sofa in the BBC studio. View More » Heston: My Life With Bipolar is available to watch on BBC iPlayer on June 19. Got a story? Waitrose to open first major supermarket in seven years

Waitrose is preparing to open its first new major supermarket in seven years as part of owner John Lewis's renewed focus on retail. The 30,000 sq ft store in Brabazon, a new town being built on the former Filton Airfield in North Bristol, is expected to open in 2027 and will create about 150 new jobs. The supermarket is a major commercial tie-up with the new town, which will be based on the site where Britain's Concorde aircraft were once built. As well as being a launchpad for the regeneration project, the multimillion-pound store reflects Waitrose's ambitious investment plans. The supermarket has set aside £1bn for opening new stores and improving another 150 sites over the next three years, as Jason Tarry, the new John Lewis chairman, spearheads a strategy that is 'relentlessly focused' on retail. The former Tesco UK chief executive replaced Dame Sharon White as chairman of the John Lewis Partnership (JLP) last year. Mr Tarry is seeking to put the retailer back on track after suffering years of successive losses under Dame Sharon. This includes scaling back targets around rental housing and finance, and battling to reinstate the staff bonus. Key to his turnaround is improving Waitrose after the business was overtaken by M&S for the first time last year, according to industry data from Kantar. The supermarket has said it will revamp 20 stores this year, double its normal rate, while it has also announced plans to launch new convenience stores in Bristol, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. James Bailey, managing director for Waitrose, said: 'We are moving up a gear in store investment as we open in new locations and modernise our existing estate to bring the quality, service and value that customers love about Waitrose closer to more people. 'Brabazon is one of the most exciting new city districts in the UK, driving the growth of one of the UK's most vibrant and successful regional economies.' Seb Loyn, of YTL Developments, the business behind the regeneration project, added: 'The arrival of Waitrose in 2027 is not only great news for the thriving community of new residents at Brabazon: it shows that this new city district is now firmly established as one of the most attractive destinations for both homebuyers and commercial investment in the South West.'

Waitrose announces new supermarket plans and store upgrades in huge expansion

Waitrose is set to open its first full-size supermarket in seven years as part of a multi-million-pound expansion plan. The new 30,000 square foot store, located in Brabazon, a new town in North Bristol, is anticipated to open its doors in 2027. The move follows a multi-million-pound agreement by parent company the John Lewis Partnership, signalling a renewed focus on larger retail formats. Developed in partnership with YTL Developments, the new supermarket is expected to create approximately 150 jobs in the area. This development represents Waitrose 's first full-line supermarket opening since before the Covid -19 pandemic, during which its expansion primarily focused on convenience and smaller franchise stores. The retailer has continued to grow its footprint through these smaller formats, including a new convenience store planned for The Arches in Bristol, and recently opened franchised outlets with Welcome Break in Spaldwick, Cambridgeshire, and Rotherham. A convenience store in Southwick, West Sussex, also recently commenced trading. Further expansion is slated for later this summer, with two more Welcome Break stores set to open in Hickling, Leicestershire, and Newark, Nottinghamshire. The opening is part of plans to invest £1 billion into new stores and improvements to 150 existing stores over the next three years. James Bailey, managing director for Waitrose, said: 'We are moving up a gear in store investment as we open in new locations and modernise our existing estate to bring the quality, service and value that customers love about Waitrose closer to more people. 'Brabazon is one of the most exciting new city districts in the UK, driving the growth of one of the UK's most vibrant and successful regional economies. 'Partnering with YTL Developments at Brabazon underlines our ambition and the opportunity we believe we have to grow our reach.' The store will be in Brabazon, a new neighbourhood in Bristol being built on the former Filton Airfield, where every UK Concorde was built. Seb Loyn, planning and development director at YTL, said: 'The arrival of Waitrose in 2027 is not only great news for the thriving community of new residents at Brabazon. 'It shows that this new city district is now firmly established as one of the most attractive destinations for both homebuyers and commercial investment in the South West.'
