Kentucky takes Game 2, series against Oklahoma
The Oklahoma baseball team picked the wrong part of the regular season in which to struggle.
In the penultimate weekend of the regular season, the No. 16 Sooners have now dropped both of their first two games against Kentucky, falling 8-5, on Saturday. The Wildcats clinched the set with the win and the Oklahoma, which plays No. 1 Texas next week, seems unlikely to host a regional in the NCAA Tournament without taking that series against the Longhorns or winning the SEC Tournament.
Kentucky jumped on OU quickly, scoring four runs in the first inning another in the second to open a 5-1 lead. Oklahoma starter Cade Crossland walked two batters, hit another and gave up sacrifice fly, a two-run triple and an RBI single as the Wildcats sent eight batters to the plate in the opening frame.
Crossland had been staked to a 2-0 lead before he even took the mound after Easton Carmichael knocked in Jason Walk with an RBI single and Jaxon Willits followed with an RBI groundout. But the Sooners right-hander ultimately worked just three innings, giving up those five runs on three eights, four walks and and two hit batters.
Kentucky tacked on three more runs to put the game away in the fifth inning, though Oklahoma brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth. Scott Mudler hit a two-out, two-run double in the inning an inning after he popped a solo home run. The double put him at second base and Mason Hamlin at third. But Dawson Willis lined out to center field ending things.
The Sooners will almost certainly drop in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll rankings when the poll is released Monday. An upset over the Longhorns could keep Norman Regional hopes alive, though OU will likely earn a No. 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Sunday's finale against Kentucky is scheduled for noon Sunday.

USC women's basketball's Kennedy Smith named to Team USA AmeriCup roster

Beginning next week, the 2025 Women's AmeriCup basketball tournament will take place in Santiago, Chile. On Thursday, Team USA released its roster for the tournament. Making the team was USC rising sophomore Kennedy Smith. Smith is coming off an impressive true freshman season at USC. On the year, she averaged 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 2.0 assists per contest. 'Kennedy. Smith,' USC head women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb wrote on social media following the announcement. 'So dang proud. Great roster.' The AmeriCup tournament will run from June 28 through July 6. The U.S. teams consists of the top women's college basketball players in the country. (WNBA players are not able to participate due to it taking place in the middle of their season.) Were she healthy, USC's Juju Watkins would have likely been the headliner of the team. With Watkins currently recovering from the ACL tear she suffered during the NCAA Tournament, Smith is the only Trojan headed to Santiago.

Eric Musselman, USC hoops host Sacarmento Kings group for workout at Galen Center

During his time as the head coach of USC men's basketball, Eric Musselman has loved bringing in NBA players and coaches to Galen Center for workouts. On Tuesday, Musselman welcomed a contingent from the Sacramento Kings: DeMar DeRozan, Zach Levine, Mason Jones and head coach Doug Christie. "Awesome having @DeMar_DeRozan, @ZachLaVine, @TheDougChristie, and @masonjones2 at the Galen Center this morning," USC's head coach wrote on social media. DeRozan, of course, is quite familiar with Galen Center, having played for the Trojans for a season in 2008-2009. That year, he led USC to a Pac-10 Tournament championship and the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to national runner-up Michigan State. Jones, meanwhile, played for Musselman when he was the head coach at Arkansas from 2018-2020. Musselman is also familiar with Sacramento, having coached the Kings during the 2006-2007 season. After posting a 33-49 record, he was let go by the team after just one year. Fortunately for Musselman, he has found far more success at the college coaching level than he did in the NBA. USC fans are certainly hoping that Musselman will continue the success that he had at Nevada and Arkansas with the Trojans.
