USC women's basketball's Kennedy Smith named to Team USA AmeriCup roster

USA Today7 hours ago

Beginning next week, the 2025 Women's AmeriCup basketball tournament will take place in Santiago, Chile. On Thursday, Team USA released its roster for the tournament. Making the team was USC rising sophomore Kennedy Smith.
Smith is coming off an impressive true freshman season at USC. On the year, she averaged 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 2.0 assists per contest.
'Kennedy. Smith,' USC head women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb wrote on social media following the announcement. 'So dang proud. Great roster.'
The AmeriCup tournament will run from June 28 through July 6. The U.S. teams consists of the top women's college basketball players in the country. (WNBA players are not able to participate due to it taking place in the middle of their season.)
Were she healthy, USC's Juju Watkins would have likely been the headliner of the team. With Watkins currently recovering from the ACL tear she suffered during the NCAA Tournament, Smith is the only Trojan headed to Santiago.

USC Makes Juju Watkins Announcement on Friday

USC Makes Juju Watkins Announcement on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The USC Trojans women's basketball team had a memorable 2024-25 season, finishing 31-4 overall and going 16-1 in their first year of Big Ten play under head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. Advertisement USC reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament before falling to eventual national champion UConn. The Trojans ended the year ranked fifth in the final Associated Press poll. Despite the success, the season ended with a sense of what might have been. The team's top player, Juju Watkins, suffered a torn ACL in the second round of the tournament, cutting her sophomore campaign short. USC never got a shot at UConn at full strength. Watkins still finished as the fourth-leading scorer in the country. Since the season ended, the Trojans have shared some uplifting news. On Friday, USC announced that Watkins was one of three players named to the university's Spring 2025 Dean's List: "Congrats to Malia, JuJu & Laura on being named to the Spring 2025 Dean's List!" Watkins was recognized along with teammates Malia Samuels and Laura Williams for their academic achievements. According to the university, the Dean's List honors undergraduates who earn a high GPA (usually 3.5 or above) while enrolled full-time with at least 12 credits. Advertisement Watkins added to her list of accomplishments with a trophy-filled season. She won the 2025 John R. Wooden Award, the Dawn Staley Award, and was named both the Associated Press and Naismith College Player of the Year. She averaged 23.9 points per game over 33 contests. South California Trojans guard JuJu Watkins (12) © Stephanie Amador Blondet-Imagn Images Her freshman season was even more explosive. She led the nation with 27.1 points per game and pulled down 7.3 rebounds over 34 games. Watkins is represented by Klutch Sports Group and has a major NIL deal with Nike, along with several other endorsements, making her one of the highest-earning players in women's college basketball. As USC looks ahead to next season, Watkins' recovery will be a major storyline. But her academic and athletic excellence continues to set the standard for the program. Angel Reese Sends Strong Message Following Exciting Announcement

Angel Reese Sends Strong Message Following Exciting Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While much of the spotlight is currently on the basketball court with the WNBA season in full swing, Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese continues to make a major impact off the court as well. Advertisement This week, Reese—partnering with Cash App—announced the unveiling of a custom-designed public basketball court at Oakwood Beach in Chicago. The vibrant court features a bold message: "This court is brought to you by your good friends Angel Reese and Cash App." Now in just her second season with the Sky, Reese has already become deeply involved in the local community. On Friday, ahead of Chicago's matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, she was asked about the court and the inspiration behind it. 'Obviously, I didn't know exactly what it was going to look like,' Reese said. 'I knew they were doing the court, and that's something I really emphasize—giving back to the community. Chicago has poured so much into me. They've done so many great things for me in just a year and a half, and I'm super happy to call this place home. I've had a lot of people send me selfies there. It's right by the water—people didn't even realize Chicago has water like that—but it's really nice. The feedback has been amazing.' Since entering the league, Angel Reese has expanded her brand beyond basketball, landing several high-profile partnerships. Among them, Cash App has been a key collaborator, but she's also inked deals with major brands like Hershey, Beats by Dre, McDonald's, and most notably Reebok, which is set to release her signature shoe in 2026. Advertisement Drafted seventh overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2024 WNBA draft out of LSU, Reese has been a consistent bright spot on a team still finding its footing. The Sky finished 13–27 last season and are off to a 3–8 start this year, but Reese's development has remained steady, solidifying her status as one of the league's brightest young stars. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Currently, she stands as the WNBA's only player averaging a double-double, with 11.0 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game—positioning her well for what could be a second consecutive All-Star appearance.
