Rachel Brosnahan calls out actors for criticizing their own superhero films: ‘Do it or don't do it'

Hindustan Times3 days ago

Rachel Brosnahan is stepping into the superhero universe this summer. She is all set to play Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman film. While some actors have been known to criticize their superhero roles, Brosnahan has made it clear she would not be one of them.
In a candid exchange with Amanda Seyfried for Interview magazine, the actress addressed the trend of actors disowning their involvement with comic book blockbusters after release.
'I don't know why people say yes [to a project] only to then turn around and complain about it,' Rachel Brosnahan said. 'Look, I don't want to s*it on other actors, but there was a minute where it was cool to not like superhero movies and to look back on projects like this and pooh-pooh them. Do it or don't do it, and then stand by it.'
Though the actress refrained from naming anyone, her words appeared to touch on the growing number of stars who have recently taken a step back from, or publicly critiqued, their own superhero ventures.
The upcoming Superman movie, directed by James Gunn, follows Superman as he tries to balance his alien roots with his life on Earth and his human family.
Along with Rachel Brosnahan, the film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, also known as Superman. Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced are also part of the project. The film will hit cinema screens on July 11.

James Gunn opens up about his favourite DC project which has 'not been announced at all'

Washington, DC [US], June 20 (ANI): DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has many projects in the pipeline, with his 'Superman' releasing July 11, season 2 of 'Peacemaker' nearly wrapped for an August premiere, and the 'Lanterns' HBO series halfway through filming, reported Variety. However, Gunn is also working on a few TV and film projects, which he has not revealed yet. One project in particular, he kept very quiet because he didn't want anyone to steal the idea, Gunn said, "My favourite thing has not been announced at was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that's one of the main things." Gunn said he'll "probably" direct one of his new mystery projects. "Well, I always leave saying I'm going to direct something till I'm actually done with the screenplay, and then I say, 'Yeah, I want to do this.' But it's probably what I will direct. Yeah, probably, to be totally realistic. Yes, probably," he said, reported Variety. The ace director shared that when a well-known actor pitched him a project, he told him he was looking for a "masterpiece." "I told it to one person who came in and pitched something that was an Elseworlds tale," he said. "It was a very, very, very famous movie actor. I said, 'It depends on how the screenplay comes it's a masterpiece, I'll make it, but it has to be a masterpiece.' And he is like, 'I don't know if it's a masterpiece.' He got all funny. He's still working on it, though. He is still trying to do it, so we'll see. Masterpiece might be pushing it, but it's got to be really great." Gunn didn't just tease upcoming movies. He also mentioned another "favourite thing" that's a TV project. "Then there's another TV show that's my favourite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon," he said. "It's just my favourite thing. And then there's the s--! I don't know what I'm allowed to say or not say, but there are a couple of other movies that are being written, one of which is in pretty good shape, another which is kind of closer to the start, but we feel positive about. And then there's a thing I'm writing, which I think it's okay.... So what will be the next thing after 'Clayface' is not 100 per cent certain, but it's pretty certain," reported Variety. (ANI)

Was James Cameron's The Abyss pulled from Disney+? Explaining the scene that got the movie banned in the UK

The Abyss is a 1989 sci-fi horror film directed by James Cameron and released in 1989. The film's premise harkens back to the Cold War era, with an American submarine sinking in the Caribbean. A search-and-rescue team frantically searches for the wreckage in the depth of the ocean before the Soviets find it first, but in the process, they discover new horrors unexpected horrors in the depths. The film had a contentious release in the United Kingdom thanks to a scene that animal rights groups alleged was animal abuse. The scene portrayed a real-life rat being submerged in liquid fluorocarbon. Although the rat reportedly survived, the British Board of Film Classification nonetheless deemed the scene a violation of the 1937 Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act and demanded that all UK prints of the film cut out the scene. However, the controversy has resurfaced with the film's Disney+ release. The Abyss Disney+ release was uncut The Abyss's Disney+ release drew renewed controversy from UK animal rights groups such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) after they discovered that the version of the film released on the streaming service was uncut. Their protests have proven successful, as the film has since been pulled from the UK region of Disney+, meaning that audiences once again have no official way of viewing the controversial banned scene. All prior theatrical and home video releases of The Abyss had complied with the BBFC order and excised the scene. The RSPCA denies engaging in 'cancel culture' The RSPCA, on their social media, accused streaming services of exploiting loopholes that allowed them to get away with including alleged animal abuse that national censor boards were meant to prevent. 1989 film, 'The Abyss' on Disney+, features a scene where a real rat is forcibly plunged into a tank full of chief vet shared concerns with the BBFC at the time, and the scene was cut under laws which prohibit showing animal cruelty on the big screen or in videos. In a statement, an RSPCA spokesperson said that they wouldn't protest the film's return to Disney+, provided the controversial scene was removed, stating: "This isn't about cancel culture – we'd welcome Disney Plus reinstating the film to their platform, just with this troubling scene removed…This was instead about highlighting a loophole that currently exists allowing animal abuse scenes deemed unacceptable elsewhere to be streamed freely and legally into our homes - and protecting the public from having to see this animal abuse content." While it's entirely possible for the BBFC-compliant UK cut of The Abyss to return to Disney+, the banned scene will remain banned for the foreseeable future.
