NU clinches rare fifth straight crown in UAAP men's volleyball
The UAAP men's volleyball crown remains in Jhocson Street.
National University won its fifth straight title after sweeping Far Eastern University, 25-16, 28-26, 25-23, in Game 3 of the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball finals on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
In the third set, the Tamaraws had a chance to extend the match as they led 17-14, with Dryx Saavedra leading the offense for the Morayta crew. Leo Ordiales and Greg Ancheta eventually tied the set at 17 before Saavedra and Luis Miguel put FEU in front.
Buds Buddin's attack, followed by an FEU error, evened the set at 19 before Miguel put the Tamaraws in front as they continued their bid to extend the match. Eventually, the likes of Buddin and Peng Taguibolos stepped up for NU as errors marred FEU's late attempt, helping the Bulldogs to their cause.
Ordiales had 13 points from 10 attacks and three blocks, while Taguibolos and Buddin chipped in 10 and nine points, respectively.
Leo Aringo, who was named Most Valuable Player of the Finals series, had nine points to go with 10 excellent receptions and four digs. He also had 8.7 points, 11.3 receptions and 4.3 digs in the finals series.
The win spoiled Saavedra's 24 point eruption for the Tamaraws.
While FEU led in attacks with 43 against 39, errors did not help their attempt as they had 78 against NU's 65.
FEU took Game 1 before NU won the next two in the best-of-three series.
This is NU's seventh overall title in men's volleyball, with their championship streak dating back to UAAP Season 80 in 2018.
Aside from the men's title, NU also reigned in the women's and girls division this season.

San Beda's Amir Aningalan among first football awardees of Collegiate Press Corps
NCAA San Beda University's Amir Aningalan is among the Collegiate Press Corps' first football awardees in its upcoming Awards Night on June 30. Aningalan, the Most Valuable Player of NCAA Seasons 99 and 100, is set to be recognized as the CPC NCAA Football Player of the Year. This is the first time that the group of writers covering the UAAP and NCAA decided to recognize top student-athletes in football. Aside from being back-to-back MVP, Aningalan delivered the much-needed goals of the Red Booters in both finals stints where they went against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. San Beda, meanwhile, has been a dominant force in NCAA football and has won 26 titles overall. Over in the UAAP, Far Eastern University's Mon Diansuy and Carmela Altiche were named as the CPC Men's and Women's Football Players of the Year. Diansuy, a goalkeeper, was instrumental in FEU's championship run against Ateneo de Manila University where they won over penalties, 1-1 (5-4). Altiche, on the other hand, played a key role in FEU'S 3-2 win over La Salle in the Finals as she not only converted a penalty in the 45+7th minute, but also made a crucial cross to Regine Rebosura for the goal in the 67th minute. Top student-athletes from basketball and volleyball will also be recognized in the Awards Night which will be held at the Discovery Suites Manila. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Collegiate Press Corps to honor top student-athletes in annual awards night
The Collegiate Press Corps, made up of sportswriters covering the collegiate beat, will hold its annual awards night on June 30 with top student-athletes from basketball, volleyball, and, for the first time, football getting their recognitions. Leading the honor roll is the Collegiate Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year after successful editions of both NCAA Season 100 and UAAP Season 87 while men's and women's mythical teams will also be handed out awards. Athletes from volleyball will also get their spotlight with UAAP Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year and NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the year. In a historic move, the CPC has expanded its recognition to football with top performers in UAAP men's and women's football as well as NCAA men's football getting their due honors. Aside from the players, coaches in both basketball and volleyball will also be acknowledged for steering these young stars to the top. 'We owe it to the student-athletes to continue to glorify their unwavering efforts, with football players in the spotlight this time around. This is our own little way of immortalizing them for what they have done not just for their respective schools, but also for collegiate sports as a whole,' said Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) president John Bryan Ulanday of The Philippine Star. UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag, sports director Bo Perasol of UAAP Season 87 host University of the Philippines and management committee board chairman Hercules Callanta of NCAA Season 100 host Lyceum of the Philippines University will serve as guest of honor and speakers. —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News
