Young big man Migs Palanca joins UP
The University of the Philippines will have a young big man come UAAP Season 88 as National University Nazareth School product Migs Palanca has joined the Fighting Maroons.
Palanca, a 6-foot-7 forward, will be eligible to play in the upcoming season and will have full five playing years.
"Kinailangan natin to add size, and we saw naman talaga 'yung potential ni Palanca. Magiging malaking tulong siya sa atin hindi lang for next season, but for five full years," UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde said.
"Pero siyempre, bata pa yan. Nire-remind lang din natin na stay focused and whatever challenges that we will be facing, laban lang."
Palanca, who had averages of 9.1 points in 57-percent shooting, 7.4 rebounds, 1.1 blocks in UAAP Season 87, initially committed with the Bulldogs but decided to hear out offers from other teams before choosing the Diliman-based squad.
Recently, former Far Eastern University standout Veejay Pre also committed to UP but will have to sit out next season to serve his residency.

San Beda's Amir Aningalan among first football awardees of Collegiate Press Corps
NCAA San Beda University's Amir Aningalan is among the Collegiate Press Corps' first football awardees in its upcoming Awards Night on June 30. Aningalan, the Most Valuable Player of NCAA Seasons 99 and 100, is set to be recognized as the CPC NCAA Football Player of the Year. This is the first time that the group of writers covering the UAAP and NCAA decided to recognize top student-athletes in football. Aside from being back-to-back MVP, Aningalan delivered the much-needed goals of the Red Booters in both finals stints where they went against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. San Beda, meanwhile, has been a dominant force in NCAA football and has won 26 titles overall. Over in the UAAP, Far Eastern University's Mon Diansuy and Carmela Altiche were named as the CPC Men's and Women's Football Players of the Year. Diansuy, a goalkeeper, was instrumental in FEU's championship run against Ateneo de Manila University where they won over penalties, 1-1 (5-4). Altiche, on the other hand, played a key role in FEU'S 3-2 win over La Salle in the Finals as she not only converted a penalty in the 45+7th minute, but also made a crucial cross to Regine Rebosura for the goal in the 67th minute. Collegiate Press Corps to honor top student-athletes in annual awards night
The Collegiate Press Corps, made up of sportswriters covering the collegiate beat, will hold its annual awards night on June 30 with top student-athletes from basketball, volleyball, and, for the first time, football getting their recognitions. Leading the honor roll is the Collegiate Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year after successful editions of both NCAA Season 100 and UAAP Season 87 while men's and women's mythical teams will also be handed out awards. Athletes from volleyball will also get their spotlight with UAAP Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year and NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the year. In a historic move, the CPC has expanded its recognition to football with top performers in UAAP men's and women's football as well as NCAA men's football getting their due honors. Aside from the players, coaches in both basketball and volleyball will also be acknowledged for steering these young stars to the top. 'We owe it to the student-athletes to continue to glorify their unwavering efforts, with football players in the spotlight this time around. This is our own little way of immortalizing them for what they have done not just for their respective schools, but also for collegiate sports as a whole,' said Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) president John Bryan Ulanday of The Philippine Star.
