Nalanda University adds 4 new PG courses, V-C says reinforcing its role as centre of high learning

Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Sachin Chaturvedi has announced four new postgraduate courses in economics, hindi, mathematics and philosophy, taking the total PG programmes to 12. Chaturvedi, who is also the Director General of Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), joined as the university's V-C last month. He said, 'Expansion of courses are meant to expand academic scope and reinforce NU's role as a premier centre of research and high learning.' The new courses are in consonance with the blended vision of ancient and new Nalanda universities to focus on mathematics and philosophy. Meanwhile, Hindi has been added as part of the Central government's thrust to promote mother tongue, and economics is added as per the V-C's vision. 'The spirit of Nalanda has evolved as a vibrant expression of continuous engagement with eternal values and the civilisational ethos of the east. It embodies a rich intellectual tradition, marked by openness, inclusivity and a globally oriented outlook. Building upon this legacy, the vision for the new Nalanda is shaped by a forward-looking blueprint rooted in integrative wisdom. It draws inspiration from an eastern worldview in which faith, intellectual inquiry and material well-being are not regarded in isolation, but as deeply interwoven dimensions of holistic human existence.' The previous PG courses included historical studies, ecology and environment studies, Buddhist studies, comparative religions, Hindu studies (Sanatana Dharma), world literature, archaeology, international relations and peace studies, and MBA in sustainable development and management. NU, established under Nalanda University Act, 2010, started functioning from 2014 with two PG courses having only 12 students. PM Narendra Modi formally inaugurated NU campus — spread over 455 acres at Rajgir foothills — last year. Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. CJI to inaugurate Preamble Park, perform ground breaking for new NU School of Law on June 28

1 2 Nagpur: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai will inaugurate the historic world-class multi-crore Preamble Park at Nagpur University's Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar School of Law on Amravati Road on June 28. The CJI will also perform the ground-breaking ceremony of a new iconic multi-storeyed building for the School of Law. The CJI will arrive for his three-day visit to Nagpur on June 27. This is his first visit after taking oath of the highest judicial office. On the first day of his tour, the District Bar Association (DBA) will felicitate the CJI, and on June 28, the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) will honour him. CJI Gavai will formally inaugurate the administrative building of MNLU at Waranga at 10.30am on June 29. The Rs10-crore first-of-its-kind Preamble Park consists of replicas of the Supreme Court and Parliament, along with a 7.5 ft statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar, an amphitheatre, murals, and an aesthetic gate, which took several years to complete. The country's first Samvidhan Park or Constitution Preamble Park was planned on the 125th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar in 2016, and bhoomipuja was performed by then guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on the occasion of Constitution Day in 2019. Lack of funds, permissions, and coordination between multiple govt agencies and NU officials delayed the project over the years. The social welfare department funded around Rs2 crore, while social worker Girish Gandhi, former mayor Anil Sole, and former MP Ajay Sancheti, Prakash Gajibhiye contributed Rs5 lakh each for the project. NU also paid Rs2 crore. School of Law director Ravishankar Mor told TOI that the CJI would be inaugurating the Preamble Park as well as laying the foundation of a new iconic building at 11am on June 28. The transformation of the historic college, earlier known as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College, is part of its centenary year celebration. The college has a legacy of stalwarts including former CJI Sharad Bobde, PV Narsimha Rao, CM Devendra Fadnavis and several judges and politicians passing out from here. The NU merged its postgraduate law department with the college to disseminate UG to PhD education under one roof, aligning with NEP 2020. Mor said the new building would be unique among all the Schools of Law in the country. The project is estimated to cost Rs200 crore, with a five-storey academic block to come up on the open land behind the existing college building. Special focus has been given to aesthetics, as the new building will be modelled on structures like the RBI, high court, and GPO. It will have two large auditoriums, besides modern curved classrooms equipped with the latest technology. Three-floor basement parking will accommodate 5,000 cars, while the academic block will have five floors. "A litigation complex will be attached to the School of Law on the lines of a medical college with a hospital. Courts and tribunals like grievance cells and consumer forums will run from this complex. Students will get first-hand experience of court functioning and will be trained for litigating as well as the corporate world," said Mor.

NU to hire 110 assistant professors on contract for new academic year

Nagpur: Facing a chronic shortage of teaching staff, Nagpur University (NU) will appoint 110 assistant professors on a contractual basis for the academic year 2025–26. The university has also hiked the monthly honorarium to ₹40,000 and mandated that applicants hold either a NET/SET qualification or a PhD degree. The decision has been taken to attract qualified and experienced candidates, Several postgraduate departments at NU have been functioning without full-time faculty for extended periods, while others are operating with skeletal teaching staff. University-run colleges are also reeling under severe faculty shortages. Efforts to appoint regular teaching staff at Nagpur University have been stalled for years. A previously launched recruitment drive was derailed due to technical issues and remains unresolved. Although the university received government sanction to fill 92 regular posts, the process was complicated by the separation of Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT), a university-conducted college, that has since become an independent university. The sanctioned 92 posts included approximately 23 positions from LIT. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Total AV 2025 – Save Up to 80% Off Antivirus Today Total AV - Tier 2 Install Now Undo Then Vice-Chancellor Subhash Chaudhari had written to the government seeking clarity on the division of these vacancies, but no response has been received so far. Meanwhile, NU received over 2,000 applications for the posts. However, the recruitment cannot proceed until separate rosters for NU and LITU are formally established. As per the current contractual recruitment drive, science and technology departments have the largest vacancies, with 40 positions advertised. This is followed by 24 posts in social sciences and 11 in languages, both under the Faculty of Humanities. The Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies will recruit nine teachers, Commerce and Management will get six, and three will be appointed in the Centre for Specialised Studies. Another 17 posts will be filled in the University's College of Education and Law College. The appointments have become urgent, as the university has made it mandatory for affiliated colleges to meet minimum teaching staff requirements to receive continuation of affiliation. Senate members have repeatedly flagged the shortage of teachers as a critical concern. Senate member Manmohan Bajpai pointed out that while the last date for application is June 28, the university has not clarified whether a selection panel has been formed. "The university must also state when the process will be completed. There is no schedule yet for scrutiny, interviews, or final selection," he said.

Koreti is a professor in NU's postgraduate history department. Postgraduate physics department professor Umesh Palikundwar will be in-charge of science and technology faculty. These teachers replaced Sanjay Kavishwar and Prashant Maheswari, respectively. The full-time deans were appointed by then vice-chancellor Subhash Chaudhari, who passed away in September last year. The deans were allowed to continue till the end of the academic year in April, but their terms were extended till June 15, keeping NU's workload in mind. The process of appointing a new vice-chancellor has also picked up pace, with the university planning to soon publish a recruitment advertisement. Once a new VC is appointed, the NU will also get full-time deans and a pro vice-chancellor.
