It's a significant setback for St. Louis, as Herrera had emerged as the team's most dangerous power threat in the middle of the lineup. Through 171 plate appearances, he was hitting .320 with a .392 on-base percentage and .533 slugging, tallying eight home runs, 36 RBI, 22 runs and one stolen base. This marks his second stint on the injured list in 2025, having already missed time earlier in the season due to a knee issue.

Pedro Pages and Yohel Pozo are expected to handle the catcher duties while Herrera is on IL. This could most likely domino effect into Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson seeing more time at designated hitter.
The Cardinals recalled Saggese from Triple-A Memphis on Friday.

During Masyn Winn's absence in April, the 23-year-old spent most of the month with St. Louis and impressed at the plate, batting .341 with a .364 OBP and .512 slugging percentage, including one home run over 14 games. Despite the strong showing, limited opportunities forced him back to Triple-A Memphis, where he's maintained an .836 OPS across 185 plate appearances. With Ivan Herrera hitting the injured list Friday due to a hamstring issue, Saggese may now get a more consistent look in the lineup as the Cardinals aim to keep his bat active.
Prior to a sweep against the Chicago White Sox, the Cardinals had won one of their past eight. St. Louis is currently tied in second place with the Milwaukee Brewers behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.
With Ivan Herrera out due to a torn hamstring, the Cardinals called up Thomas Saggese from Triple-A. Pedro Pages and Yohel Pozo will handle catching duties, while the move could give Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson more time at DH. Saggese, who hit well during an earlier call-up, may now get more regular at-bats as St. Louis tries to stay in the NL Central race.

Lakers Luka Doncic's sends ‘speed' message that will scare rest of NBA
The post Lakers Luka Doncic's sends 'speed' message that will scare rest of NBA appeared first on ClutchPoints. Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic has long been one of the NBA's best players. Known for controlling the game despite lacking elite speed, Doncic made a surprising remark about his quickness during an appearance on the Mind the Game podcast with Steve Nash and LeBron James. Advertisement '[The Thunder] speed people up. They can't speed him up… What's your take?' Nash asked Doncic in the podcast's most recent episode. 'I have speed, I just don't show it,' Doncic replied while smiling. Doncic's style is often praised for its poise and control, standing out in a league filled with speed and explosiveness. His knack for shifting pace and direction while maintaining balance—and throwing defenders off theirs—has become a hallmark of his game. Luka Doncic with the Lakers Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images The Lakers star hasn't needed to rely on speed to dominate offensively. At 26, he put up 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game during the 2024-25 stint with Los Angeles. Advertisement Doncic dictates tempo on his terms, and defenses have consistently failed to throw him off rhythm. Even the surging Oklahoma City Thunder, have struggled to contain him. Steve Nash pointed out that OKC can't force Doncic to play faster—an edge that's fueled his success in their matchups. He ousted the Thunder in last year's Conference Semifinals, and there was plenty of intrigue around how he might have fared against them again this postseason. Similarly, Doncic has faced steady criticism for lacking the foot speed to keep up with opposing players—an issue that's only grown since he added weight in recent years. While his slower pace works offensively, it's a liability on defense, where opponents often blow by him. The Lakers would welcome any flashes of quickness he's yet to show on that end of the floor. Doncic surrendered more blow-bys in Game 5 against the Minnesota Timberwolves than any other player in this year's playoffs. While it wasn't the main reason behind the Lakers' elimination, the Timberwolves repeatedly driving past him made matters worse. Doncic already slimmed down Despite last season's outcome, Doncic remains one of the NBA's elite playmakers. Steve Nash shared how impressed he is by Doncic's knack for delivering late passes, and asked whether that skill was natural or something he developed over time. Advertisement LeBron James praised Doncic for how effortlessly he controls the tempo of a game — a strength James has long excelled at himself. With training camp giving them time to build chemistry, it'll be exciting to watch how the two stars operate together next season. Videos from Luka Doncic's 2018-19 rookie season have resurfaced on social media, showing a noticeably quicker and more agile version of the Lakers star. With reports suggesting he's already slimmed down this offseason, there's growing optimism that improved conditioning will help boost his speed and impact on both ends of the court next season.

Niko Medved, Gophers Add 4-Star UNC Transfer Commit
The Minnesota Gophers men's basketball team, when they take the floor again in October, will look completely different than they did last season. Of course, that isn't anything new. In the transfer portal/NIL era, under Ben Johnson, the U of M had more new faces on its basketball team each year than they did familiar ones. But in 2025-26, they will take it to another level. Not only will they have a new head coach on the sideline — after Johnson was fired and replaced with Niko Medved shortly after the Golden Gophers were eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament, back in March — but there are only two freshman from last year remaining on this roster… along with nine new players out of the transfer portal. Minnesota Gophers MBB get commitment from Cade Tyson (UNC) And on Sunday, they got their latest transfer addition, and this one is tied for the highest-rated portal commit they have received yet this offseason. Cade Tyson is coming to Dinkytown from the University of North Carolina, where the 6'7″ sharpshooting wing averaged 2.6 points and 1.1 rebounds, in just 7.9 minutes per game during his one season as a Tar Heel. But Tyson isn't new to college basketball. Prior to arriving at Chapel Hill, the 91-rated four-star small forward (according to 247Sports) played two seasons at Belmont, where he averaged 30.4 minutes per game between his freshman and sophomore seasons. Advertisement Related: Ben Johnson was the NIL Problem for Gophers Men's Basketball As a senior for the Bruins in 2023-24, Tyson put up 16.2 points per game, second most on his team. He also led Belmont in rebounds, at 5.9 per game. He also averaged 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a freshman. But when Cade — who is from Monroe, North Carolina — got an opportunity to go home, he jumped on it. Unfortunately, he was not able to make as big of an impact as he had hoped, while playing for his hometown UNC. Even after a down year, Tyson was contacted by Kentucky, Iowa, Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Purdue, BYU and Virginia Tech, according to Ryan James (247Sports). Advertisement In his career, Cade Tyson is a 43% three point shooter (48.3% FG). Last season, as a member of the Tar Heels, he shot just 40% from the field and 29% from deep. Coming to Minnesota as a senior, Tyson hopes to get back to the sharpshooter he was at Belmont. Related Headlines

Phillies Linked To Trade For Cardinals Pitcher Not Named Ryan Helsley
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies have long been linked to a trade that would send Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley to Philadelphia. The Phillies need relief pitching this season, and Helsley is the top name on the market. But if Philadelphia doesn't want to trade away the prospects it would take to land Helsley, it could turn to a different Cardinals pitcher as a trade target. Colin Keane of Sports Illustrated recently suggested the Cardinals and Phillies could come together on a trade that would send reliever Steven Matz to Philadelphia. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JUNE 3: Steven Matz #32 of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches against the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium on June 3, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JUNE 3: Steven Matz #32 of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches against the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium on June 3, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri."The Philadelphia Phillies are gearing up for the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline," Keane wrote. "Between now and July 31, Philadelphia's front office will be tasked with adding pieces to ensure World Series contention. "Philadelphia should be monitoring the St. Louis Cardinals as important sellers, especially as Thomas Harrigan recently identified 34-year-old reliever Steven Matz as a possible trade chip. This trade could be a win-win, giving the Phillies a proven arm to chase a World Series title while providing the Cardinals with assets to bolster their ongoing youth movement." Matz has been solid this season and would provide the Phillies with a solid lefty out of the bullpen. But Philadelphia needs a big upgrade, not a trivial one. If the Phillies are going to call the Cardinals, it should be about the aforementioned Helsley. It would be quite disappointing the the Philadelphia faithful if Matz were to be the team's top bullpen acquisition of the season. It wouldn't be a bad move if the Phillies could add him for cheap, but it can't be the only bullpen addition if they're serious about competing for a World Series this season.
