The St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies have long been linked to a trade that would send Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley to Philadelphia.
The Phillies need relief pitching this season, and Helsley is the top name on the market. But if Philadelphia doesn't want to trade away the prospects it would take to land Helsley, it could turn to a different Cardinals pitcher as a trade target.
Colin Keane of Sports Illustrated recently suggested the Cardinals and Phillies could come together on a trade that would send reliever Steven Matz to Philadelphia.

ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JUNE 3: Steven Matz #32 of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches against the Kansas City Royals at Busch Stadium on June 3, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri."The Philadelphia Phillies are gearing up for the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline," Keane wrote. "Between now and July 31, Philadelphia's front office will be tasked with adding pieces to ensure World Series contention.
"Philadelphia should be monitoring the St. Louis Cardinals as important sellers, especially as MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan recently identified 34-year-old reliever Steven Matz as a possible trade chip. This trade could be a win-win, giving the Phillies a proven arm to chase a World Series title while providing the Cardinals with assets to bolster their ongoing youth movement."
Matz has been solid this season and would provide the Phillies with a solid lefty out of the bullpen. But Philadelphia needs a big upgrade, not a trivial one.
If the Phillies are going to call the Cardinals, it should be about the aforementioned Helsley. It would be quite disappointing the the Philadelphia faithful if Matz were to be the team's top bullpen acquisition of the season.
It wouldn't be a bad move if the Phillies could add him for cheap, but it can't be the only bullpen addition if they're serious about competing for a World Series this season.

A juvenile was arrested for assaulting an officer, and seven people were ejected after Wydad AC fans were seen setting off smoke bombs at Lincoln Financial Field during the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday, Philadelphia police said. Wydad, which is based in Morocco, was taking on Juventus in a group stage match when the smoke bombs went off in a section of the Linc. Wydad fans also set off the smoke bombs during last Wednesday's match against Manchester City in South Philly. A representative from FIFA told CBS News Philadelphia that smoke bombs are not allowed at their events. Lincoln Financial Field also has a strict bag policy. Fans are permitted to bring the following kinds of bags into the stadium: clear bags within a certain measurement range, a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag or a small clutch-style bag that is around the size of a hand. Yankees-Red Sox Trade Idea Sends Proven Postseason Star to New York
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees lost Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery in the spring, but never really made a move to replace him. The Yankees hoped to have Cole, Max Fried and Luis Gil leading their rotation this season. Gil and Fried were still slated to be a great duo, but Gil has been on the injured list all season. Now, Ryan Yarbrough, who had pitched well for the Yankees since joining the rotation, is also on the injured list. If the Yankees were running away with the American League East, they could afford to simply wait on their arms to get healthy. However, the Tampa Bay Rays have been the biggest surprise in baseball and are just 2 1/2 games out of the division lead. The Yankees need to add an arm, even if Gil and Yarbrough return. BOSTON, MA - APRIL 21: Walker Buehler #0 of the Boston Red Sox pitches against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning at Fenway Park on April 21, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. BOSTON, MA - APRIL 21: Walker Buehler #0 of the Boston Red Sox pitches against the Chicago White Sox during the first inning at Fenway Park on April 21, 2025 in Boston, key for the Yankees will be finding a rental arm who can take the ball in October. Sports Illustrated's Colin Keane suggested the Yankees go after the pitcher who ended their season last year, Walker Buehler. Buehler has struggled for the Boston Red Sox this year, but has a track record of success when it counts. In 19 postseason appearances, 18 starts, Buehler has a 3.04 ERA. He is a two-time World Series champion and dominated the Yankees in the World Series. He threw five shutout innings in Game 3 of the Fall Classic and then notched a series-clinching save on one day of rest. The only runs Buehler gave up last postseason came in the second inning of Game 3 of the National League Division Series. In his final 13 innings of the postseason, he had 13 strikeouts and was key to the Los Angeles Dodgers' World Series title. The Red Sox are a half-game out of a wild card spot entering play on Monday, so they may not be inclined to sell, especially to the Yankees. However, if they fall out of contention, the Yankees could show interest in Buehler. His 5.95 ERA this season is less than encouraging, but the Yankees would be banking on him dominating in October. Buehler is a two-time All-Star and could be a free agent after the season. He has a $25 million mutual option for next season. The Yankees could put his arm to good use if the Red Sox fall out of contention. More MLB: Yankees Trade Idea Brings Cy Young Award Winner to New York After Ryan Yarbrough Injury

Nick Sirianni's most iconic quote as Eagles head coach just met its match
Nick Sirianni trades flowers in bloom for a soliloquy about perfume and poison. Depending on how old you are and what your profession is, you've probably been guilty of rattling off coach speak at the office more times than you care to remember. Then, if you're like most, that same football jargon has probably spilled over into your personal lives. There aren't many Philadelphia Eagles die-hards who haven't glanced at their children once or twice and told them 'the standard is the standard' or to 'keep the main thing the main thing'. It's been well over eight years since that first Super Bowl victory parade. The only thing we remember is Jason Kelce's speech, something about 'hungry dogs running faster', and how 'no one likes us' and 'we don't care'. Some day down the line, most of us will offer that same advice to our grandchildren. Then, we'll talk about good ol' Nick Sirianni and how a discussion about flowers birthed one of the greatest eras of Eagles football we have ever witnessed. Nuck Sirianni may have finally topped the greatest line of his Eagles coaching era. It's amusing how life sometimes turns out. Long ago, a much younger Nick Sirianni was still trying to find his way in his first season as Eagles head coach. Philadelphia wasn't winning as often as most had hoped. Everyone was looking for answers. What did Coach do? He spoke to his team about flowers and the importance of the roots growing. He was given a hard time after that, but it worked. Since that speech, his team has made the playoffs in each of his first four NFL seasons. Sirianni has led them to the Super Bowl twice. The most recent appearance led to a dominant win and the franchise's second Vince Lombardi Trophy. So, here's an intriguing question. What does one say after that? Rest easy, everyone. Coach has got it covered. He may have outdone himself. Listen to that last part again. 'The celebration is over. Preparation is here... Now, it's a little different. You gotta handle success. It's a different animal... Treat praise like perfume. Sniff it, don't drink it—it's poison.' Seriously, what does one say after that? Bravo Coach. After watching Philadelphia accomplish everything they have after a speech about flowers, what might we expect to see now? The Eagles report to training camp on July 22. They'll be ready. Fewer times has anything been more certain.
