Federer to serve as Le Mans starter
Roger Federer will serve as official starter for this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans sportscar race in June, organisers said on Thursday.
The Swiss tennis great will lower the flag to start the 93rd edition of the endurance race at 4 p.m. on June 14 at the Sarthe circuit in north-west France.
The Automobile Club de l'Ouest invites a well-known international personality to start the race every year. Last year's was flagged away by French soccer World Cup-winner Zinedine Zidane.
"It will be a tremendous privilege to welcome Roger Federer as the official starter of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. His influence extends far beyond tennis," said ACO president Pierre Fillon.
Federer, winner of 20 grand slam titles, said it was a huge honour. "I've always been fascinated by the commitment, precision and resilience it (the race) demands," he added.
Ferrari have won the last two editions. Switzerland's Sebastien Buemi is a four times winner and triumphed most recently with Toyota in 2022.
Other Swiss winners are Neel Jani (2016) and Marcel Fassler (2011, 2012 and 2014). REUTERS

The tourists persevered and skipper Stokes was livid with himself when he fell for 20, drawn into an edge by Siraj, while Smith took a smart review and survived after initially being given out lbw off Shardul Thakur. Three dead, dozens injured after fall from upper stand in Algeria Three spectators died and more than 70 others were injured after falling from the upper stand of a stadium, following MC Alger's win in the Algerian top-flight league for the second season in a row, the Algerian ministry of health said on Sunday. "The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded," the Algerian ministry of health said in a statement via Facebook, adding: "Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16." Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his condolences and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured. "It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands," MC Alger said earlier in an Instagram post. The club has yet to comment on the additional fatalities. Local media reports said the spectators fell after a fence in the upper stand broke, with El Heddaf TV's Facebook page posting a video showing part of a railing collapsed onto the lower tier. The injured spectators were rushed to hospital, where MC Alger players, staff and administrators also went to donate blood as the trophy presentation ceremony was postponed, the reports added. Finn Russell says he's buried Johnny Sexton hatchet as old rivals united in quest for British and Irish Lions glory – Finn Russell insisted he no longer had any issues with Johnny Sexton after British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell helped ease any tensions between the duo in their quest for the common goal of a Series win in Australia. Ireland great Sexton has previously criticised Scotland fly-half Russell as 'flashy' and a 'media darling', while adding he would select Owen Farrell – Andy's son – at No. 10 in a three-Test campaign against the Wallabies because the former England captain is a 'Test match animal'. And in his autobiography, former Ireland fly-half Sexton wrote it 'kills me to this day' that he was overlooked in favour of Russell for the 2021 Lions tour of South Africa. Such comments had the potential to cause lingering tension given the now retired Sexton is a member of Farrell's staff as the Lions' kicking skills coach, with Russell in line to be the chief playmaker for a team made up of leading players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. But Russell said the issue was quickly dealt with when he joined up with the Lions' squad. 'It's just been bit of a craic, it was never a thing,' said Russell, who did not feature in the Lions' warmup 28-24 defeat by Argentina in Dublin on June 20. 'When we came in, we had a laugh straight away and Andy kind of put it to bed, so that was good. Not that it was ever going to be an issue, I don't believe. We couldn't have family and friends or fans at the game, but it was still amazing in a different way... I'm looking forward to what this one's going to be like.'
