Apple just leveled up AirPods: Here's what's new

Apple on June 9 unveiled new features for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), and AirPods Pro 2, introducing studio-quality audio recording and remote camera controls designed to elevate content creation and communication.
The latest updates allow users to capture high-quality vocals on the go, even in noisy environments, thanks to enhanced Voice Isolation and beamforming microphones, an Apple newsroom report said.

Creators, including podcasters, interviewers, and musicians, can now record clearer, more natural-sounding audio directly through their AirPods, leveraging Apple's H2 chip and advanced computational audio.
The new audio recording features integrate seamlessly across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and are compatible with the Camera app, Voice Memos, Messages dictation, FaceTime, CallKit-supported apps, and third-party video conferencing platforms like Webex.
Hands-free camera control for effortless content creation
Additionally, Apple introduced a remote camera control feature. By pressing and holding the AirPods stem, users can start or stop video recordings or snap photos using the Camera app or supported third-party apps. This feature aims to simplify hands-free content creation, especially for users recording themselves singing, dancing, or performing.
'With these updates, AirPods are becoming an even more powerful tool for creators and communicators,' Apple said in a statement.
The enhancements are expected to roll out in an upcoming software update later this year.
Apple Intelligence expands across devices
On the same day, Apple also announced new Apple Intelligence features designed to enhance the user experience across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. Apple Intelligence introduces capabilities such as Live Translation, enhanced visual intelligence, and creative tools like Image Playground and Genmoji, offering users new ways to communicate, understand, and express themselves.
Shortcuts now tap directly into Apple Intelligence, and developers can access the on-device large language model powering it — optimized for speed, privacy, and offline use. These features are now available for testing and will roll out broadly this fall on supported devices and languages.
Apple also revealed plans to expand Apple Intelligence language support by the end of the year to include Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Chinese (Traditional), and Vietnamese.

Apple executives have held internal talks about potentially bidding for artificial intelligence startup Perplexity, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. Adrian Perica, Apple's head of mergers and acquisitions, has weighed the idea with services chief Eddy Cue and top AI decision-makers, as per the report. The iPhone maker reportedly plans to integrate AI-driven search capabilities, such as Perplexity AI, into its Safari browser, potentially moving away from its longstanding partnership with Alphabet's Google. Banning Google from paying companies to make it their default search engine is one of the remedies proposed by the US Department of Justice to break up its dominance in online search. While traditional search engines such as Google still dominate global market share, AI-powered search options including Perplexity and ChatGPT are gaining prominence and seeing rising user adoption, especially among younger generations. Perplexity recently completed a funding round that valued it at $14 billion, Bloomberg News reported. A deal close to that would be Apple's largest acquisition so far. The Nvidia-backed startup provides AI search tools that deliver information summaries to users, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

SpaceX Starship Ship 36 Explodes Before Flight Test
SpaceX was set to perform a static fire test of Ship 36 before its planned 10th flight test for its Starship; however, a massive explosion at the Massey's Testing Center site disrupted SpaceX's plans on Wednesday, June 18. 'A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for,' SpaceX said in a statement. According to SpaceX, there were no hazards to residents in the area, which is located in Starbase, Texas. The fire continued for two hours after the initial explosion, according to live camera feeds from NASA Spaceflight and LabPadre. The explosion occurred before the start of the static fire and thirty minutes after the propellant load sequence started. The cause of the explosion and the extent of the possible damage are unknown; however, it follows explosions during the seventh, eighth, and ninth Starship flight tests earlier this year. The Brownsville Fire Department crews responded to the incident, according to KRGV news. Fox News reported that the authorities ensured that there were no injuries during the incident. If the explosion had not occurred, the flight test would have continued using SpaceX's 'V2' Starship design.
