Dynamic, composed, aggressive... it's long been inevitable Zubimendi's qualities would lead him to Europe's elite.
When a young Zubimendi progressed from Real Sociedad's youth ranks to become a first-team regular five years ago, he was quickly touted as a target for Barcelona to replace the fading Sergio Busquets.
That never materialised, mainly because of Barca's well-documented financial problems, but the comparison is largely accurate.
Zubimendi occupies the same terrain as Busquets at the base of midfield, protecting the back four and smoothly linking defence with attack.

He is also press-resistant, capable of receiving and calmly retaining possession in tight spaces.
But Zubimendi is physically more explosive than Busquets, able to evade pressure by driving with the ball into space.
Zubimendi is an effective and efficient performer rather than flashy — much of his best work unfussily executed off the ball.
He reads the game superbly, always popping up in the right place to receive possession from a team-mate or disrupt the opposition's rhythm. That includes game management.

A central aspect of Real Sociedad's approach is preventing counter-attacks by physically pressing the first phase of possession, using fouls if necessary.
Zubimendi's 47 career yellow cards — but no reds — show he is not averse to controlled aggression.

More tellingly — just 11 goals and eight assists in nearly 250 appearances makes it clear Zubimendi is not a major presence in the opposition final third. That is not his game.
Rather than chasing personal glory, Zubimendi makes his team better through positional discipline, distributing simply but quickly, and denying the opposition space.
If there is one concern about the long-awaited move to Arsenal, it is whether he can adapt to a new team in a new league.
Growing up in San Sebastian and joining his local club aged 12, Real Sociedad is all he has ever known.

The Basques boast one of football's best youth systems, with a clearly- defined style throughout the age groups allowing local talents to enjoy a seamless transition to senior football.
Away from that comfort zone, Zubimendi has rarely been so effective for his country.
Since his Spain debut in 2021 he has struggled to become a regular, mostly deputising for Manchester City's Rodri with just one start at last summer's triumphant Euros.

Surely no coach could be better placed to help the transition than Arteta, his fellow San Sebastian native.
The Arsenal boss knows exactly what he is getting, with the presence of former team-mate Mikel Merino another help.
At 26, Zubimendi is in his prime. The step-up to a major title candidate like Arsenal has been brewing for years.
As long he is expected to knit the team together rather than win games single-handedly, everything points towards Zubimendi quickly becoming a key piece for Arteta's Arsenal.

Everybody in the world wants to play with the best," the forward replied. "So hopefully, we'll see..." Continuing to praise Yamal, Rashford said: (Yamal) is gonna be… it's difficult to put into words what he's doing because he's not supposed to be doing it at 16, 17. He's playing at the highest level, I don't think we've seen it. To have his mentality is a skill. "He's not normal to be doing what he does and he will keep improving. (The Ballon d'Or) If you look at it in football ability he has to win, but then you look at Ousmane Dembele, the Champions League." The 27-year-old then sent a message to Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, suggesting that he can be Robert Lewandowski's long-term successor up front. Rodri impressing fellow Man City midfielder Nico Gonzalez as he ramps up fitness
Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder Rodri missed most of Manchester City's 2024-25 campaign after suffering a serious knee injury last September. He returned to action by playing seven minutes in City's penultimate Premier League fixture against Bournemouth last month and came on for the last half-hour of Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia. Gonzalez, who plays in a similar position, was signed by City in January partly to provide cover for Rodri. The 23-year-old believes he can learn a lot from his fellow Spaniard, who he feels is 'even better' than he thought. Gonzalez said: 'He has been (back training) a couple of months. He is an amazing player and really good in everything that can be good in a midfielder. 'I am trying to learn the most I can and I think I am starting to watch him at his best level. I am seeing things that I haven't seen in a lot of midfielders. 'I try to see all the passes the players don't see and take as much from him as I can. He helps me a lot. He is Spanish so we are starting to have a good relationship.' Gonzalez's signing came alongside those of Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov in the mid-season transfer window as City began to respond to their underwhelming season. The squad overhaul has continued with the arrivals of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli this month. Yet while City have clearly decided fresh faces are required after a failure to mount a strong title challenge and a premature Champions League exit, Gonzalez does not feel there was ever anything wrong with the spirit. Arsenal are poised to splash the cash in the summer transfer window, with the arrival of £51million midfielder Martin Zubmendi set to be followed by that of a big-money striker Arsenal star Jurrien Timber has told fans to expect a 'busy' summer transfer window as the Gunners prepare to spend big. Mikel Arteta's side have funds to invest after having to settle for second place in the Premier League for a third season in a row. First through the door looks set to be Martin Zubimendi, with Arsenal ready to pay his £51million release clause and fend off interest from Real Madrid. The Spaniard, 26, will offer a new element in Arteta's midfield but it's up front where fans' focus lies. The Gunners are weighing up a move for one of Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. Sporting Lisbon striker Gyokeres bagged 54 goals last season while 22-year-old RB Leipzig prospect Sesko has youth on his side and is a long-term target. Alternatives include Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Paris Saint-Germain's Goncalo Ramos, as dream signing Alexander Isak has been deemed too expensive. Whoever ends up leading Arteta's attack in the new term, Timber expects more business to be done in other areas. "It will definitely be a busy one for Arsenal," the Dutch defender told podcast Matchday. "I think we will get a lot of players, because we had so many injuries last season. At one point we almost had no players left. So for the depth of the players they definitely want to get players." Timber's own position could be under threat, having primarily played at right-back since his £34million arrival from Ajax in 2023. Arsenal are understood to be looking at a number of full-backs in addition to work being done to bolster their midfield and attack. Gunners co-chairman Josh Kroenke recently offered a hint towards the club's approach to the summer after another season without a trophy. "We plan to invest to get behind winning and doing better next season," Kroenke wrote to supporters in May. "We're delighted we have our sporting director, Andrea [Berta], who will play an important role in this. He is part of a unified and strong team, supported by the board, who are crystal clear on exactly what we need to do and the way in which we want to do it.
