Odisha: Gopalpur police arrest all 10 accused in alleged gang pape of college student

Bhubaneswar, June 17 (UNI) The Gopalpur police have arrested all 10 suspects involved in the gang rape of a college student at Gopalpur beach on Sunday, Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M. said on Tuesday.
He stated that while seven youths were arrested on Monday, three more were apprehended on Tuesday during raids as they attempted to flee the state.
The horrific incident occurred on Sunday evening when a group of youths allegedly molested the victim, who had visited the beach with her boyfriend to celebrate the Raja festival.
According to the FIR filed by the victim girl, 10 men approached them at the beach and took their photographs, threatening to make them viral on social media.
When the victim's boyfriend opposed their actions, the group assaulted him, tied him up, and took the girl to a secluded area where they allegedly raped her.
Based on the FIR, the police arrested seven youths hailing from Hinjilicut area in Ganjam district on Monday. Following interrogation, three more accused were arrested on Tuesday.
The Berhampur SP said a special investigation team has been formed to expedite the probe and ensure that justice is delivered swiftly. The police have also visited the crime scene to gather further evidence.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the state. Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida expressed her sorrow and ordered a thorough investigation.
In a post on X, Deputy CM Parida said she was deeply saddened by the gang rape of a young woman at Gopalpur beach.
She confirmed that 10 accused have been arrested so far and mentioned that she had spoken to the SP, instructing him to conduct a thorough investigation and take all necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
Former Chief Minister and leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik also strongly condemned the incident, calling it shocking and deeply disturbing.
He said the incident had shaken everyone and raised serious concerns about the safety of women in Odisha, especially in key tourist locations.
Patnaik urged the state government to take strong measures to ensure the security and safety of women across the state.

During investigation, police identified the accused as Ijesh Amliyar, Chhotu Amliyar, and Satia alias Santosh—all residents of Kakoda village under Tanda police station area in Dhar district. The SP said, "Two teams have been formed under the supervision of the SDOP to arrest the accused and a reward of Rs 5000 has been announced for information leading to the arrest of each of them. The motive behind the attempted abduction is unclear yet." "A case under section 74, 76, 137(2), 87, and 351(2) of the BNS for assault or criminal force on a woman to outrage her modesty, assault with intention to disrobe, abduction of a minor, criminal intimidation, and under relevant sections of the Pocso Act was registered against the accused," said Vyas. Kota: A POCSO court in Jhalawar Saturday sentenced a man and a woman to 20 years in jail for sexually exploiting a minor girl in Jhalawar's Kamkheda police station area four years ago in March 2021. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each accused. The accused have been identified as Hanif (49) and his partner Sonu alias Sugna (38), residents of Manhorethana police station area, public prosecutor Deepesh Bhargav told TOI. The minor survivor's father had filed a report with Jhalawar SP on March 17, 2021, alleging that Hanif and Sugna abducted his minor daughter on March 12 and Hanif sexually exploited her while Sugna assisted him. On the directions of the then SP, the police registered a case against Hanif and Sugna under sections of the IPC and POCSO Act in Kamkheda police station and began an investigation. However, the police gave the two accused a clean chit and submitted a Final Report (FR) to the court on Nov 23, 2022. The survivor, on the same day, filed a protest petition against the FR, following which the court ordered the resumption of the trial and statements of witnesses, Bhargav said. POCSO Court-2 found the two guilty and passed the sentence. The convicts have been in jail since their arrest following the trial's resumption in Nov 2022.

1 2 Berhampur: A five-member all-women Congress fact-finding team on Saturday visited Gopalpur beach in Ganjam district, where a 20-year-old college student was allegedly gang-raped by 10 men, including four juveniles, on June 15. The team, led by AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunshi, visited the crime scene and interacted with locals about the state of police patrolling. The delegation also held discussions with SP (Berhampur), Saravana Vivek M. Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan, a team member, condemned the incident. "The area lacks adequate lighting and police presence despite being a major tourist spot," the MP said. The team, which includes MPs Praniti Shinde, S Jothimani and former spokesperson Shobha Oza, will tour other areas in the state over the next three days to document incidents of violence against women. "We will submit our findings to the AICC and also meet President Droupadi Murmu," Ranjan added. She alleged the state govt failed to take women's safety seriously, citing the suspension of Congress MLAs from the assembly after they demanded a debate and committee on the matter. "At least three gang-rape cases have been reported in just a week," she added. BJP Ganjam district president Saroj Sabat said the state govt had declared the gang-rape case as a 'red flag' offence. He said the crime branch is investigating the case under the supervision of an IG-rank officer, as directed by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi. "All accused have been arrested, and the chief minister has ordered the harshest punishment for those involved," he said.
