'Uranus is weird.' Big moons of tilted ice giant hide a magnetic mystery, Hubble telescope reveals

New data from the Hubble Space Telescope suggests that Uranus' largest moons are gathering dust — literally.
Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun and home to 28 known moons, is well known for its bizarre tilt. The planet spins almost completely on its side, an oddball orientation that twists its magnetic field into a warped and constantly shifting force, which scientists have long thought would leave visible scars on its moons by bombarding them with charged particles.
However, new Hubble Space Telescope observations of Uranus' four largest moons — Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon — show no clear signs of the expected radiation damage, Christian Soto of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland, who led the analysis, told reporters on Tuesday (June 10) at the 246th American Astronomical Society (AAS) press conference in Alaska.
Based on data from NASA's Voyager 2 flyby in 1986 and decades of modeling, scientists expected the trailing hemispheres of Uranus' moons — the sides opposite their direction of travel — to be visibly darkened by radiation. The leading sides, by contrast, were expected to remain relatively brighter.
Instead, the researchers found that the two outer moons, Titania and Oberon, are darker on their leading sides, the opposite of what they had predicted. The visible darkening, they say, doesn't come from Uranus' magnetic field at all, but from dust.
Hubble's data points to a slow inward drift of dust from Uranus' distant irregular moons, which orbit between 2.5 to 13 million miles (4 to 20 million kilometers) from the planet. These outer moons are constantly bombarded by micrometeorites, which kick up particles that gradually spiral inward over millions of years, Soto said. As Titania and Oberon travel through this diffuse dust cloud, they accumulate the particles mostly on their leading sides.
"Think of driving very fast on a highway, and bugs are hitting your windshield — that's what we're seeing here," Soto said during the press briefing.
Interestingly, the inner moons Ariel and Umbriel show no significant difference in brightness between their leading and trailing sides — possibly because the drifting dust doesn't reach them, thanks to shielding by Titania and Oberon.
"Dust collection — I didn't even expect to get into that hypothesis," Richard Cartwright, a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, said in a statement. "But you know, data always surprise you."
As for the role of Uranus' powerful magnetic field, researchers now suspect that its effects might be subtler or more complex than previously thought. It may still be interacting with the moons, but not in a way that creates strong contrasts on their surfaces.

"Uranus is weird, so it's always been uncertain how much the magnetic field actually interacts with its satellites," Cartwright said in the statement.
The findings highlight how little we still know about Uranus. Apart from Voyager 2's brief flyby nearly 40 years ago, coincidentally during a rare solar event, no dedicated mission has ever visited the planet.
To learn more, Soto's team has scheduled follow-up observations with the James Webb Space Telescope within the next year. Using infrared imaging, Webb will take a closer look at the same moons, potentially confirming whether dust, radiation or a combination of both is shaping their surfaces.
"Why do we do this?" Soto said at the briefing. "Well, Uranus is weird — so why not?"

But what surprised me most was how relatable and genuine it felt, even with the sci-fi trappings. While the setting revolves around time travel, the story is about how two people from a very different era try to make sense of a future that's completely alien to them. Since its release on June 11, it's been steadily climbing Netflix's U.S. charts, cracking the top 10 and holding its ground in the No. 8 spot. So if you're looking for something a little different that still tugs at the heartstrings, this time travel romance might be exactly what you need on your watchlist. Here's everything to know about 'Our Times' on Netflix. 'Our Times' follows Nora (Lucero) and Héctor (Benny Ibarra), a married couple of physicists from 1966 who invent a time machine. When their experiment doesn't go as planned, they find themselves unexpectedly transported decades into the future — the year 2025. Thrown into a world completely unfamiliar to them, they must navigate modern technology and the challenges of adapting to a time far beyond their own. As they explore this new era, both Nora and Héctor find their relationship being tested in ways they never anticipated. The story follows their journey as they try to make sense of their situation. With the help of people from the future, they work toward finding a way back to their original time, and then deciding if that's even what they truly want. Time travel movies usually center around characters trying to fix something (whether it's a personal heartbreak or a full-blown global disaster) by changing the past, but 'Our Times' flips that idea on its head. Instead of going backward, the characters are thrust into the future, and the story becomes less about rewriting history and more about how they adjust and live in the now. This is what makes the premiere quite refreshing, and I'm glad the movie doesn't want time getting into the meat of the story. We're first introduced to a brilliant scientist couple from the 1960s who are just as devoted to each other as they are to their work. But when their groundbreaking invention accidentally launches them into the year 2025, their bond is truly tested when one of them begins to thrive in the future, and the other can't wait to get back to the past. As you can probably guess, this sets up some juicy conflict. Lucero and Ibarra bring a fun, lighthearted energy to their roles as they try to make sense of life in the 2020s. They have some humorous, awkward moments, like struggling to use modern tech or reacting with suspicion to today's fashion trends. But beneath the comedy, there's a more serious undertone: they're both especially struck by how much attitudes around gender roles and sexuality have evolved. It's then that 'Our Times' starts to peel back the layers of its premise, digging into how people evolve when everything they once knew is upended. And for most of the movie's 90-minute runtime, this messaging works. The only thing that made this sci-fi flick less effective was the third act. It felt a little hurried and uneven to me, with an ending that didn't quite land emotionally especially after how strong and engaging everything leading up to it was. 'Our Times' could've benefited from being slightly longer to go beyond surface level. Still, if you can tolerate the weak ending and some occasionally muddled messaging, 'Our Times' is enjoyable enough that it never feels like a chore to watch or like time you'll regret spending. At the time of writing, 'Our Times' doesn't have a Rotten Tomatoes score yet, but there are reviews from seven critics. Three out of seven are positive, which means this movie has had a pretty mixed reception. Maddy Casale from Decider said: 'Even if it might be an unsatisfactory ending for some, the ride to get there was entertaining, engaging, and unique enough to make Our Times still feel worth a watch.' Meanwhile, Polygon's Samantha Nelson stated that 'rather than obsessing over the idea of fixing the past, Our Times is a bittersweet meditation about personal growth and the way relationships shift with circumstances.' On the other hand, Inverse's John O'Brien said: 'With only 90 minutes at its disposal, Our Times can't go much beyond surface level – this is one of the rare occasions when you wish a Netflix running time had lasted longer.' Lucero and Benny Ibarra share a natural, believable chemistry that makes their relationship easy to invest in right from the start. Across the board, the cast delivers strong performances, all backed by detailed sets, convincing effects, and props that really sell the time period. 'Our Times' shows a lot of promise as a new take on the rom-com, but it definitely could have benefited from a stronger script and a more polished storyline (mainly to fix that ending). Viking Age woman was buried with her dog in an elaborate 'boat grave,' excavations reveal

Archaeologists have unearthed what they think are the remains of a Viking Age woman buried with her dog in the far north of Norway. The remains were found late last month in a well-preserved "boat grave" near the village of Sand on the island of Senja, which lies on the Arctic Circle, at a site first recorded by metal detectorists in 2023. The archaeologists don't yet know whether ancient DNA or sex-determined proteins can be extracted from the remains. But they suspect it was the grave of a Viking Age woman because it also contained two distinctive brooches, oval in shape and trimmed with silver wire, that have never been found in graves of Viking Age men. The style of the brooches indicates the grave dates to between 900 and 950, during the heart of the Viking Age. The researchers don't yet know how old the woman was when she died. A small dog was placed in the grave at the woman's feet, perhaps indicating the strength of the bond between them. Anja Roth Niemi, an archaeologist at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway who led the latest excavations, told Live Science that graves from this time throughout Europe often held the remains of dogs and horses. But while horse skeletons were often found in parts, suggesting the animals were sacrifices, dogs were usually buried whole. "This suggests that dogs and humans had a close and cherished relationship, even over 1000 years ago," she said in an email. Related: 7 myths about the Vikings that are (almost) totally false The researchers were surprised to find that the woman had been buried in a "boat grave" consisting of a "sewn boat" almost 18 feet (5.4 meters) long — the first such grave ever found on Senja. In these primitive "sewn boats," the wooden planks of the hull were fixed with something other than iron nails, such as wooden plugs, plant fibers or animal sinew. The boat has now rotted away, and only its shape can be seen. "So-called 'sewn boats' were, until a few years ago, very rare in northern Norway," Niemi said. "However, in recent decades, several such vessels have been found in Iron Age graves in the region." It's thus possible they were fairly common in the area, she added. Two similar boat graves had recently been excavated on the Norwegian island of Hillesøy, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Senja, she said. One of those burials was of a man, and the other was of a woman; both had lived a few generations before the woman in the Senja boat grave. The elaborate burial at Senja and rich grave goods indicate the woman had belonged to the social elite. "We believe the woman buried here held significant status locally, and perhaps even across the region," Niemi said. The body of the woman was placed in the middle of the boat, with her head facing north, and the dog's body was placed near the woman's feet, Niemi said. The grave goods included the two brooches; an iron sickle; a slate "whetstone" for sharpening knives; a metal ring with bronze beads, which may have been for tying back hair; two disk-shaped beads, possibly made from amber; a spindle whorl; and what may have been a "sword" or batten used for weaving made from whalebone. Niemi said the sickle and whetstone suggest arming and harvesting, while the spindle and batten suggest spinning and weaving; tools for making textiles were often found in women's graves in Norway and often indicated that the buried individual held high status. "Textiles were needed for clothing, blankets, and much more, but also for producing sails for boats and ships," she said. In addition, the mistress of a house also would have been expected to create fine clothes and elaborate tapestries that could be displayed during feasts and other visits, emphasizing the hosts' status, Niemi added.

Mars cozies up to one of the brightest stars in the sky in 'mind-blowing' conjunction photo

A new photo shows Mars shining like a red star in the night sky, alongside the blue-tinged "Heart of the Lion" star, Regulus. Despite their drastic differences, the two objects currently look remarkably similar. Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation Leo. The point of light is coming from a system containing four stars, arranged into two pairs of two, shining approximately 79 light-years from Earth — or around 2.8 million times farther from our planet than Mars. The system's blue tinge comes from its largest star, a blue subgiant around 4.5 times more massive than the sun. It often appears alongside, or gets eclipsed by, other solar system planets and Earth's moon, because it is situated near the ecliptic — the plane in the night sky where all solar system worlds orbit the sun. Mars and Regulus currently appear very close to one another. This conjunction peaked on June 17, when the pair was less than one degree apart, which is equal to around 1.5 times the diameter of the moon in the night sky. The Red Planet is currently shining very brightly at night because of its position relative to Earth and the sun, making it look like a red star. On June 16, the Virtual Telescope Project captured an incredible image of the two objects with nearly identical brightness, using a 14-inch telescope in Italy. The stellar objects look like perfect mirror images of each other, aside from their striking color contrast. "The beauty of their colors is mind-blowing," Gianluca Masi, an astronomer and founder of the Virtual Telescope Project, told Related: Parisian photographer produces phenomenal, perfectly-proportioned 'planetary parade' portrait If you look hard at the image, you may be able to see a fuzzy, faint spot of light between Mars and Romulus, located slightly closer to the blue star. This is the ghostly trace of the Leo I dwarf galaxy, about 820,000 light-years away: "Capturing it in the same frame as Mars and Regulus is something rare and deeply evocative," Masi said. The conjunction began on June 11. The two bodies are no longer as close as they were, but they can still be seen together with the naked eye. But you can get a better look at the pair using a decent telescope or a pair of stargazing binoculars. The best time to see it is just after twilight under totally clear skies, according to Live Science's sister site 2025 has already seen several noteworthy conjunctions, including a rare "planetary parade" in February, when all seven solar system worlds were near-perfectly aligned in the night sky. Mars and Mercury will also have close conjunctions with the moon later this month.
