Ludhiana West bypoll on June 19, AAP look to retain seat

Indian Express25-05-2025

The Election Commission of India (ECI) Sunday announced that bypoll for the Ludhiana West Assembly constituency in Punjab will be held on June 19. Bypolls to four other Assembly constituencies—two in Gujarat, one each in Kerala and West Bengal—will also be held on the same day.
The Ludhiana West seat had fallen vacant following the death of sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. Political parties have already announced their candidates for the bypoll, and campaigning has been underway for a while now.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Rajya Sabha member and industrialist Sanjeev Arora as its candidate. Arora, a native of Ludhiana, is known for his work in social welfare and entrepreneurship.
The Congress has fielded former Punjab minister and two-time MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who is currently serving as working president of the Punjab Congress.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has named senior advocate Parupkar Singh Ghumman as its candidate, and he has pledged to bring the seat back to the party.
The ECI announcement sets the formal electoral process in motion to restore representation in the region. It has released a detailed schedule: the gazette notification will be issued on May 26; the last date for filing nominations is June 2, followed by scrutiny on June 3 and withdrawal of candidature by June 5. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 23, and the entire election process will conclude by June 25.
The Kadi and Visavadar seats in Gujarat, Nilambur in Kerala and Kaliganj in West Bengal are the other four Assembly seats going to bypoll on June 19.
To ensure transparency and credibility, the ECI will use updated electoral rolls published on May 5, based on the qualifying date of April 1. Continuous updation will continue until ten days before the nomination deadline. All polling stations will be equipped with electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter-verifiable paper audit trails (VVPATs).
The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into immediate effect in the constituency. Candidates with criminal antecedents are required to publicly disclose their records via newspapers, television, and social media.
To streamline nominations, the ECI has also directed that 'no dues certificates' be issued to candidates who have occupied government accommodation in the past ten years.

Assembly bypolls result: Trinamool's Alifa Ahmed wins massively, BJP comes 2nd

Kolkata, June 23: Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed registered a massive win in the bypoll to the Kaliganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district of West Bengal. The Election Commission of India declared her the winner after 23 rounds of counting were completed. She won with a margin of 49,755 votes. As per the ECI, Ahmed has secured 1,02,179 votes, BJP's Ashish Ghosh came in the second position with 52,424 votes, followed by Left Front-supported Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Shaikh at 28,262 votes. The fourth position has been secured by NOTA at 2,500. This means that the total votes going in favour of the Trinamool Congress candidate are more than the combined votes going in favour of the BJP and Congress candidates, as well as NOTA. As expected, Alifa Ahmed surpassed the winning margin of her late father and then legislator from Kaliganj Nasiruddin Ahmed, who won from there in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections by a margin of 45,987 votes, defeating BJP's Abhijit Ghosh. Bypoll to the Kaliganj was necessitated by the demise of Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year. Confirming her victory and the victory margin, Alifa Ahmed told media persons that the people of Kaliganj had voted in favour of development and also against attempts at communal divide. 'The people of Kaliganj have again proved that there is no space for communal politics in West Bengal. From my margin, it is evident that people from all religious communities have voted for me,' she said. Kaligani is a minority-dominated constituency with Muslim voters constituting almost 60 per cent of the total voters there. According to political observers, from the results and the margin, it is evident that Trinamool Congress has successfully consolidated the Muslim votes in its favour, as it did both in the 2021 Assembly as well as in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After this bypoll, Trinamool has 227 MLAs in the 294-member Assembly, the BJP has 66, and the AISF has one.

People rejected both BJP and Congress in bypolls, Arvind Kejriwal, after AAP wins bypolls in Gujarat, Punjab

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on June 23 said people are fed up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat. The former chief minister said that people had rejected both the Congress and the BJP in the bypoll results announced on Monday. AAP leader Gopal Italia won the Visavadar seat, while BJP's Rajendra Chavda bagged the Kadi seat on Monday, as counting for bypolls to the two constituencies in Gujarat concluded, officials said. AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora also won the Ludhiana West assembly seat in Punjab , defeating his nearest rival and Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu. AAP's Sanjeev Arora, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, won the Ludhiana West Legislative Assembly by 10,676 votes after the 14th and final round of counting. Kejriwal said the Ludhiana West results show that the people of Punjab are very happy with the government's work, and they have given more votes than in 2022. "The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP and they are seeing hope in Aam Aadmi Party," he said in a post on X in Hindi. Thanking the people of Punjab and Gujarat, Kejriwal said people had rejected both BJP and Congress in these bypolls. "Many congratulations to all of you on the splendid victory of Aam Aadmi Party in Visavadar seat of Gujarat and Ludhiana West seat of Punjab. Many congratulations and many thanks to the people of Gujarat and Punjab. In both the places, the victory margin has been almost double as compared to the last election," Kejriwal said in a post on X in Hindi. "Both the parties, Congress and BJP, contested the elections together in both the places. Both of them had the same objective - to defeat AAP. But people rejected both these parties in both the places," he claimed in the post. Celebrations erupted at the AAP headquarters in Delhi with party workers distributing laddoos to celebrate the twin victories. The people of Gujarat are now fed up with BJP and they are seeing hope in Aam Aadmi Party. The Congress-led UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath has won the Nilambur assembly by-poll in Kerala by 10,928 votes. The poll panel said Shoukath defeated M Swaraj, the candidate of the ruling CPI(M), on Monday. The Trinamool Congress was leading by over 50,000 votes in the by-election to the Kaliganj assembly seat in West Bengal's Nadia district even as counting for the last round was underway. Key Takeaways Voter sentiment in Gujarat and Punjab indicates a growing dissatisfaction with traditional parties like BJP and Congress. AAP's victories in these bypolls demonstrate a potential shift in the political landscape of India. The success of AAP could signal the rise of alternative political parties in regions dominated by established players.
