PPP project under consideration to develop KSRTC's Thamarassery depot
A public private partnership (PPP) project is under consideration for the development of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation's (KSRTC) Thamarassery depot in Kozhikode district as part of improving the rural and inter-district services. Preparation of the masterplan will begin soon, which will also address the immediate renovation requirements.
Action comes in the wake of a discussion initiated recently by M.K. Muneer, MLA, and local administrators with Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar. A team of experts comprising architects, people's representatives, and officials representing the Public Works department has already visited the proposed spot to understand the requirements and plans suitable for speedy execution.
To improve revenue
KSRTC officials said the depot, located in a one-acre spread compound, can be developed with superior facilities for the passengers and the bus crew to improve the corporation's revenue from the rural area. They also said that the depot is now managing over 30 successful services with limited staff amid all development crises, including very old buildings and pending renovation works.
Thamarassery grama panchayat authorities said that the Thamarassery depot stands second in generating better income from rural bus services in the district. According to them, there were initially over 40 services which were cut short citing shortage of conductors and drivers. The depot is now functioning in a 45-year old building, they added.
'Our proposal is to approve a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) project in PPP model, which can be implemented within a year if the State government and the KSRTC are extending full cooperation. A two-storey building with underground workshop for maintenance works is what we seek with the finalisation of the masterplan,' said Thamarassery grama panchayat president A. Aravindan. He also hopes that corporate social responsibility funds from some organisations will further support the project.
Services reinstated
Following the local administrators' request, some of the previously suspended long distance services to Thiruvananthapuram and Guruvayur had been reinstated at the depot. The KSRTC officials said the shortage of about 25 drivers also should be addressed to resume some of the previously stopped rural services at the earliest.

Davanagere: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation ( KSRTC ) achieved notable success in digital payments, collecting Rs 10 crore in eight months through its Davanagere division. This achievement follows KSRTC's intensified promotion of UPI payments since Nov 2024. The organisation aims to collect Rs 1 crore daily through digital means, targeting 50% of all transactions. Passengers embraced the QR code payment system for bus fares, despite initial technical difficulties. The digital payment implementation resolved issues related to small change, enhancing the travel experience and reducing conflicts between passengers and conductors. From Nov 2024 to June 15, 2025, the division collected Rs 11 crore via UPI across its three depots: Davanagere Depot-1, Davanagere Depot-2, and Harihar Depot. Minister directs DC to allot Pumpwell bus stand land to KSRTC to operate electric city buses
Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Saturday, June 21, directed the district administration to handover seven acres of land at Pumpwell to Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to enable it to operate electric buses on city routes. In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, the Minister said the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) had acquired the land to build a satellite bus terminal in the city. Now the central government has sanctioned 100 e-buses to KSRTC's Mangaluru Division under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, the land may be handed over to KSRTC free of cost, the Minister said. Mr. Rao also directed the Deputy Commissioner to hand over 9.9 acres of land belonging to the gram panchayat at Balepuni village near Mudipu, off Mangaluru, free of cost to KSRTC to set up electric bus depot and construct divisional workshop. Eleven cities As many as 11 cities in Karnataka have qualified to introduce electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, according to Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Besides Mangaluru, the cities included Mysuru, Davangere, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Belagavi, Hubballi, Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Ballari, and Vijayapura. The three State-owned transport corporations under whose jurisdiction the cities were located, have submitted a demand for total 795 e-buses under the scheme. While KSRTC had demanded 100 buses for Mysuru and Mangaluru and 50 buses for Davanagere, Shivamogga and Tumakuru, North West KRTC had sought 100 for Belagavi and 110 buses for Hubballi-Dharwad. The Kalyana Karnataka RTC wanted 100 buses for Kalaburagi, 55 for Bellari and 80 buses for Vijayapura. The Central government wanted to boost electric mobility infrastructure in the country through the scheme that envisages deployment of 10,000 electric buses in 169 cities in the country through a Central outlay of ₹20,000 crore under public-private partnership mode. The total estimated cost of the scheme would be ₹57,613 crore. Covering cities with three lakh and more population, the scheme would support bus operations for 10 years.

Project on the anvil to convert old diesel-powered KSRTC buses into e-buses
Old diesel-powered buses of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be converted into electric buses under a joint project of the transport utility, the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT) and Toshiba. Quick charging What is special about this initiative is that the buses will be fitted with lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) batteries which can be charged in 10 to 20 minutes using pantograph charging systems during stopovers at bus stations. The buses will be equipped with rooftop charging receivers that facilitate overhead charging using pantograph arms. The project will see the engines, gearbox and transmission systems of KSRTC buses older than five years replaced with battery, battery management system (BMS) and Motor Control Unit (MCU). 'Toshiba will be supplying the battery. As the buses will use a quick-charging system, passengers need not be kept waiting,' ANERT director Narendra Nath Veluri told The Hindu. Pilot project Under a pilot project, three buses will undergo conversion with a power train system comprising a 200 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and the 100 to 150 kWh LTO battery. In the initial phase, the buses will ply on the Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam route and the Thiruvananthapuram-Kottarakkara route. The pantograph charging facility will be installed in select bus stations on the route such as Kayamkulam. But a decision is yet to be finalised on this point, Mr. Veluri said. Lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP) batteries commonly used in electric vehicles take one to four hours to be fully charged. Emission control The Kerala State Action Plan on Climate Change 2023-2030 notes that Kerala has around 1.3 lakh buses, both government and privately-owned, and the current growth rate is as low as 1.5%. 'At this rate, Kerala is estimated to have 1.5 lakh buses by 2030, including private buses. Hence there is scope for the introduction of e-buses that can bring down emissions remarkably,' the action plan says. The 14th Five Year Plan of the State envisages improving the efficiency of public transportation by modernising the KSRTC's bus fleet with energy-efficient buses with LNG/CNG and e-buses.
