Russell Crowe reunites with Superman son Henry Cavill for reboot of another beloved action franchise

Daily Mail11 hours ago

Russell Crowe is reuniting onscreen with Henry Cavill, more than a decade after they acted with each other in the Superman film Man of Steel.
The 2013 superhero movie starred Henry in the lead role and Russell as his biological father Jor-El, who saves his son's life just before losing his own.
Now, fans will be able to see them back onscreen in a remake of the 1986 action fantasy picture Highlander, which launched a franchise of the same name.
In the original Highlander, Christopher Lambert played Connor MacLeod, a 16th century Scottish warrior who discovers he is immortal unless his head is severed.
He gets initiated into the secret world of immortals by the virtuoso swordsman Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, memorably portrayed by Sean Connery.
A reboot starring Henry as MacLeod was announced in 2021, and now, after years of development, Russell has been cast as Ramírez, according to Variety.
The original Highlander emerged as a roaring success in 1986, leading to the 1991 sequel Highlander II: The Quickening, which flopped disastrously.
However the series staggered on for the 1994 release Highlander III: The Sorcerer, a direct follow-up of the first film as if the events of the second never happened.
There was also a TV series from 1992 to 1998, followed by the 2000 film Highlander: Endgame, which was a sequel to the show rather than to the previous movies.
In 2021 it emerged that the original movie was being remade with Henry in the lead, back when he was still starring as Geralt of Riva on the Netflix medieval fantasy series The Witcher, before his departure and replacement by Liam Hemsworth.
The new film will be directed by Chad Stahelski, who helmed all the John Wick movies, and will have a script by Michael Finch, who co- wrote the fourth John Wick picture.
Russell first met Henry long before they ever worked together, back when the latter was a teenager at boarding school in the English countryside.
The encounter took place when Russell was filming his 2000 drama Proof of Life, starring him and Meg Ryan, at the Stowe School - where Henry was a student along with Russell's onscreen son Merlin Hanbury-Tenison.
Russell recalled that 'during a break in the shooting,' he caught sight of a rugby union game and noticed 'one kid on that field who was very fluid and in control.'
The teenager 'came over to have a chat, but all his questions were about acting, and there was just this smile in his eyes but there was something dead serious behind that smile,' Russell said on The Graham Norton Show in 2013.
'So instead of not answering the questions or whatever - 'cause you get asked these questions a hundred thousand times - I told him the truth in the brief moment that I had with him, and put it in front of him that it's a challenge that's up to him. Nobody's gonna give it to you,' Russell remembered.
'A couple of days later, I was putting a package together for the kid who'd played my son, because I figured the greatest thing if you're at boarding school must be unexpected mail, and I thought: "I'll put one together for that other bloke," and I'd remembered his name because he'd been very clear when he said it,' he shared.
His note to Henry was the saying: 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,' which Russell interpreted as meaning: 'If you want it, you go and get it.'

Lucille Ball's daughter reveals shock reason I Love Lucy star stayed with husband Desi Arnaz despite affairs

Lucie Arnaz — the daughter of Hollywood icons Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz — has addressed her late father's alleged infidelities during his 20-year marriage to Ball. The actress, 73, sat down with CBS Sunday Morning over the past weekend to candidly open up about the topic in a rare interview. It comes just weeks after a new biography titled Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television written by Todd S. Purdum was published, which contains conversations with both Lucie and her brother Desi Arnaz Jr. However, as she talked to the publication, Lucie admitted that she didn't see her dad's reported infidelities as 'affairs,' and added that the Cuban bandleader never knew the names of the women he had been with. 'People say he had affairs. He never had an affair,' she stated. 'He didn't even know these dames' names, you know? They were hookers.' Interviewer Mo Rocca then questioned, 'They were transactional?' which prompted Lucie to reply, 'Yeah. He loved my mother, he loved his family.' She continued, 'It was a very unique, weird problem to have, and I think that's the reason she stayed with him so long, is that she understood it.' But the actress admitted to Rocca, 'I don't think I could do what she did. 'But somehow, at the time, with what they had, with what they needed from each other, they stuck it out as long as they could.' Lucille and Desi first crossed paths in 1940 while on set of the movie Too Many Girls and eloped that same year at the Byram River Beagle Club in Connecticut. The pair were known for playing on-screen couple Lucy and Ricky Ricardo in the beloved CBS sitcom I Love Lucy, which aired from 1951–1957. The series was a breakthrough in terms of syndicated television, and had also been the most watched show in the US for four of its six seasons. I Love Lucy had also starred Vivian Vance and William Frawley, and the series garnered a total of five Emmy wins. However, Ball and Arnaz's marriage was in stark contrast to the one portrayed on television for audiences around the country. The actress first filed for divorce from Desi in 1944 due to his reported affairs and alcohol problems. The two were able to reconcile and the split was called off. Following a few miscarriages, Lucille welcomed her first child Lucie in 1951, shortly before the first episode of the hit series aired. A couple years later, Desi Arnaz Jr. was born, and his birth was also written into an episode of the show. But Ball and Arnaz's tumultuous marriage came to an end in 1960 when the mother-of-two filed for divorce from Desi. The divorce was finalized only two months later. Lucie previously talked about her parents' divorce during a past interview with Closer Weekly. 'The best thing that ever happened to them was getting divorced,' she said, adding that they had a 'great' and 'successful' divorce. The star explained, 'It was fantastic. If their parents can't get along and that happens, then kids should be so lucky to have a divorce like my mom and my dad did, because they were kind, they never said bad words about each other in front of their children and they stayed friends 'til the day they died. 'It was a fantastic romance that even got more passionate and more friendly after they were not married to each other anymore, so there.' Lucie later expressed, 'They just knew that it wasn't working for them to stay married and that was sad.' 'But once they decided to stop, everything got much easier for everybody. We spent all of our weekends and summers with my dad, and my mother the rest of the time.' She added, 'But they were very pleasant with each other about visitation and who got to go with who and when. There was never a moment of animosity after that at all.' However, when the initial separation happened, Lucie told the Television Academy back in 2011 that it was 'hard.' The actress — who was nine years old when her famous parents divorced — said, 'Part of me probably totally understood why, because we had heard the arguments and that wasn't fun either. 'But it was hard. It was very hard. And I didn't want my dad out of the house. He was out of the house enough. I didn't want him to go any further away.' In the recently released biography about Desi Arnaz by Todd S. Purdum, Desi Arnaz Jr. also talked about learning of their split as a child. 'And we'll always remember when they sat us down and said, "Look, you know, things aren't working." I mean, I remember word for word,' he said. Lucille went on to marry Gary Morton in 1961, and the pair stayed together until her passing at the age of 77 in 1989. 'And we'll always remember when they sat us down and said, "Look, you know, things aren't working." I mean, I remember word for word,' he said; Lucille seen with her children in 1984 in NYC 'I mean, that was a knife in the heart,' Lucie said of her initial feelings towards her mom's remarriage while talking to the Television Academy. 'You're kidding right? It's only been a year. Not even. So it was a rough period for all of us.' However over time, Lucie became close to her stepfather and reflected on Ball's marriage to Gary. 'He made her laugh and didn't embarrass her in any way. He didn't drink too much. He didn't smile and giggle with the ladies. I don't know if they had a passionate marriage. I hope so.' Her father Desi tied the knot once again, marrying Edith Hirsch in 1963. The two remained together until Edith's death in 1985 after a battle with cancer. Desi passed away the following year. Lucie said of her late stepmother: 'She was a joy, an absolute joy. Great laugh. She taught me how to drive, she went bowling with us, she took us to the fair.' 'She knew exactly how to handle my dad,' the actress added. 'She was amazing...I really miss her.' And despite her parents' divorce in 1960, she stated that Lucille and Desi remained close friends 'until the bitter end.'

Miley Cyrus, 32, jokes that she's become a 'cougar' while updating family on her romance

jokingly referred to herself as a 'cougar' while discussing her relationship with boyfriend Maxx Morando, who is six years younger than her. The 32-year-old Grammy winner — who recently made a surprise appearance at Beyonce's Paris concert — opened up about the topic on Thursday's episode of her mom Tish and sister Brandi's Sorry We're Cyrus podcast. The former Disney channel star has been linked with the 26-year-old drummer since 2021, while both her mom and older sister are also in relationships with younger men. Brandi, 38, is currently dating Matt Southcombe, 36, while Tish, 58, is married to Prison Break actor Dominic Purcell, 55. The Flowers songstress stated, '[Maxx] will be 27 when I turn 33, which I'm so excited for him to turn 27 because that was such a great year for me. 'I'm just hoping that, as long as he follows in my footsteps, everything is going to be great. That's right when I started turning my life around.' Miley also pointed out that she is 'the landslide' of all three due to her age gap from Maxx being the most. She later said, 'Me and Maxx... sometimes we're only four [years apart] for three days. We're only a couple of days apart. 'He's a Scorpio [and] so is his grandfather, that's what makes Maxx just so cool because he can sting. Like, very cool [and they] think that they're little angels until it turns around and they got a sting.' The performer continued, 'I couldn't be with someone [who] doesn't sting. They would have been toast already.' Cyrus and Morando first began dating after they went on a blind date back in 2021 and their romance was officially confirmed the following year. During a past interview with British Vogue in 2023, the actress expressed: 'Well, it was blind for me and not really for him. I thought, "The worst that can happen is I leave."' The couple mainly keep their relationship out of the public eye, but have been spotted at a few events this year. Back in March, Miley and Maxx were seen walking the red carpet together at the 97th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood. Later that evening, the pair also stopped by Vanity Fair Oscars Party. One month prior, the two stars also attended the SNL50: The Anniversary Special in NYC as well as the Homecoming Concert alongside Miley's mother Tish Cyrus. And just last week, the lovebirds were seen enjoying a lowkey outing together in Malibu. Cyrus has previously talked about her and Maxx's age gap during an interview with Harper's Bazaar late last year. 'He looks at life really differently than I do,' she said, before adding, 'He grew up with a laptop. I had a desktop computer that I shared with my brothers and sisters.' Despite him being younger, the singer explained, 'He's very similar to me. We just don't take life too seriously.' Also during her podcast appearance this week, Miley made the allegations that her Hannah Montana co-star Mitchel Musso had smoked pot on set, which he soon shut down. 'Well, that's not how I remember it,' Musso expressed in a statement to E! News. 'However, I've got plenty of stories from those years that might be worth having a conversation about. 'If we're revisiting Hannah Montana history — just say the word,' he continued, before emphasizing that he had no hard feelings towards the performer. 'All love to Miley and the fam, even when the rewrites get this creative,' Mitchel concluded to the outlet. Cyrus and Musso had worked alongside other stars on the Disney channel series including her dad Billy Ray, Emily Osment, Jason Earles and Moises Arias. The show was a hit and aired on the network for a total of four seasons - and also spawned concert films and other projects such as Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009). The show also garnered a number of accolades during its time on the air, such as receiving four Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Children's Program. Along with Hannah Montana, Mitchel is also known for his roles in the animated series Phineas And Ferb as well as Disney XD's Pair Of Kings. However, he was written out of the latter after his arrest in 2013 for DUI suspicion - and had also been driving while intoxicated under the legal age since he was age 20 at the time of the incident. In 2023, he was arrested for public drunkenness and allegedly stealing a bag of chips from a motel in Texas. Later that same year, the two major charges of public intoxication and theft were dropped. During Miley's appearance on the Sorry We're Cyrus podcast which dropped on Thursday, she cleared the air about what went down behind the scenes of Hannah Montana. When a fan wrote in asking, 'What's a core memory from the Hannah Montana days that still makes you laugh?' Miley didn't miss a beat, replying, 'Dad smoking pot and everyone blaming me for it,' and her sister Brandi quickly confirmed, 'I do remember that.' The Flowers hitmaker pointed to Tish and added, 'And he wasn't sharing, 'cause this one wasn't toking yet.' Tish - who's since been open about her marijuana use - chimed in with a laugh, recalling how she tried to defend Billy Ray at the time: 'They were calling me saying 'B-Ray' was smoking pot and I was like, "Absolutely not, he would never do that!"' The trio then cracked up as they joked about Miley's former Hannah Montana castmate Mitchel Musso taking the blame instead. Back in January, Tish opened up about why she stopped smoking weed, despite previously embracing her status as a self-proclaimed stoner. Miley also recently unpacked a decade's worth of family drama and trauma and revealed how she mended all of her fences. She grew up to be a global pop star in her own right, though she revealed on last Tuesday's episode of Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, her road to fame was filled with family strife. Cyrus teased the whole family went through a, 'really difficult, dark decade' but they were able to get through it. But the star revealed on the podcast that the family was able to mend their fences without therapy.

Meet the woman behind Florian Wirtz: Glamorous WAG of Liverpool's new £116million star is a fashion influencer with over 100,000 TikTok followers - and now she's swapping Germany for Merseyside

Florian Wirtz will be joined by his glamourous partner Aaliyah Mohamed after completing his record-breaking £116million move to Liverpool. After weeks of negotiations, the Germany attacking midfielder was unveiled as a Reds player on Friday night, becoming the most expensive British transfer ever amid the hefty price tag he will now carry on his back. Liverpool finally agreed the deal with Bayern with personal terms long not an issue, and Wirtz will hit the ground running in red when the Premier League champions return for pre-season ahead of their title defence. But the 22-year-old will not be heading to Liverpool alone. Though he opts to keep his personal life mostly private, his girlfriend will be joining him on Merseyside to support him in the next stage of his career. Photos of Wirtz and Aaliyah started to emerge last year when she was spotted on the pitch at Bayer Leverkusen's BayArena to celebrate the German side's invincible season under Xabi Alonso. She was then seen out in Germany to support her partner at the European Championship, which saw the Germans fall flat as they lost to eventual winners Spain in the quarter-finals. During the game against France, the influencer, who has over 118,000 followers on TikTok, was seen chatting to Kai Havertz's partner Sophia Webber, as well as Wirtz's father in the stands. Aaliyah's Instagram account is private, but she shares fashion videos to her TikTok followers, often picking up hundreds of thousands of views on her videos. Her followers often flood to the comment section of her videos, with one fan dubbing her 'the prettiest women I have ever seen'. She was also previously snapped by Cologne photographer Jonas Herrlein, which saw her don an outfit of a denim top with white sleeves, accompanied by a skirt. The couple are thought to have started dating in 2022, and Aaliyah has even been seen to accompany Wirtz to games when he has been watching in the stands due to injury. Wirtz, meanwhile, declared his ambition to 'win everything, every year' after making his blockbuster switch from Bayer Leverkusen. He said: 'I would like to win everything, every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work. 'In the end, we want to be successful. Last season, Liverpool won the Premier League, so my goal is to win it again and also go further in the Champions League. I'm really ambitious. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and join the Premier League.' In a video on Instagram, the 22-year-old added: 'What would I say? I would say, thank you for the support, of course, I also saw it on Instagram or everywhere else that they are wanting me to come. 'I would say thank you for the support and I'm really looking forward to playing in front of them and achieving big things together. 'So yeah, I'm really happy to come and sorry for the long wait.' After a relatively reserved few transfer windows, Liverpool fans have been left slack-jawed by what looks to be an almost perfect transfer window so far. Arne Slot had already signed Wirtz's former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m. Witrtz and Frimpong were crucial to Leverkusen's invincible domestic double in 2023-24 under Xabi Alonso and were recently on holiday together.
