Lucille Ball's daughter reveals shock reason I Love Lucy star stayed with husband Desi Arnaz despite affairs
Lucie Arnaz — the daughter of Hollywood icons Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz — has addressed her late father's alleged infidelities during his 20-year marriage to Ball.
The actress, 73, sat down with CBS Sunday Morning over the past weekend to candidly open up about the topic in a rare interview.
It comes just weeks after a new biography titled Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television written by Todd S. Purdum was published, which contains conversations with both Lucie and her brother Desi Arnaz Jr.
However, as she talked to the publication, Lucie admitted that she didn't see her dad's reported infidelities as 'affairs,' and added that the Cuban bandleader never knew the names of the women he had been with.
'People say he had affairs. He never had an affair,' she stated. 'He didn't even know these dames' names, you know? They were hookers.'
Interviewer Mo Rocca then questioned, 'They were transactional?' which prompted Lucie to reply, 'Yeah. He loved my mother, he loved his family.'
She continued, 'It was a very unique, weird problem to have, and I think that's the reason she stayed with him so long, is that she understood it.'
But the actress admitted to Rocca, 'I don't think I could do what she did.
'But somehow, at the time, with what they had, with what they needed from each other, they stuck it out as long as they could.'
Lucille and Desi first crossed paths in 1940 while on set of the movie Too Many Girls and eloped that same year at the Byram River Beagle Club in Connecticut.
The pair were known for playing on-screen couple Lucy and Ricky Ricardo in the beloved CBS sitcom I Love Lucy, which aired from 1951–1957.
The series was a breakthrough in terms of syndicated television, and had also been the most watched show in the US for four of its six seasons.
I Love Lucy had also starred Vivian Vance and William Frawley, and the series garnered a total of five Emmy wins.
However, Ball and Arnaz's marriage was in stark contrast to the one portrayed on television for audiences around the country.
The actress first filed for divorce from Desi in 1944 due to his reported affairs and alcohol problems. The two were able to reconcile and the split was called off.
Following a few miscarriages, Lucille welcomed her first child Lucie in 1951, shortly before the first episode of the hit series aired. A couple years later, Desi Arnaz Jr. was born, and his birth was also written into an episode of the show.
But Ball and Arnaz's tumultuous marriage came to an end in 1960 when the mother-of-two filed for divorce from Desi. The divorce was finalized only two months later.
Lucie previously talked about her parents' divorce during a past interview with Closer Weekly.
'The best thing that ever happened to them was getting divorced,' she said, adding that they had a 'great' and 'successful' divorce.
The star explained, 'It was fantastic. If their parents can't get along and that happens, then kids should be so lucky to have a divorce like my mom and my dad did, because they were kind, they never said bad words about each other in front of their children and they stayed friends 'til the day they died.
'It was a fantastic romance that even got more passionate and more friendly after they were not married to each other anymore, so there.'
Lucie later expressed, 'They just knew that it wasn't working for them to stay married and that was sad.'
'But once they decided to stop, everything got much easier for everybody. We spent all of our weekends and summers with my dad, and my mother the rest of the time.'
She added, 'But they were very pleasant with each other about visitation and who got to go with who and when. There was never a moment of animosity after that at all.'
However, when the initial separation happened, Lucie told the Television Academy back in 2011 that it was 'hard.'
The actress — who was nine years old when her famous parents divorced — said, 'Part of me probably totally understood why, because we had heard the arguments and that wasn't fun either.
'But it was hard. It was very hard. And I didn't want my dad out of the house. He was out of the house enough. I didn't want him to go any further away.'
In the recently released biography about Desi Arnaz by Todd S. Purdum, Desi Arnaz Jr. also talked about learning of their split as a child.
'And we'll always remember when they sat us down and said, "Look, you know, things aren't working." I mean, I remember word for word,' he said.
Lucille went on to marry Gary Morton in 1961, and the pair stayed together until her passing at the age of 77 in 1989.
'And we'll always remember when they sat us down and said, "Look, you know, things aren't working." I mean, I remember word for word,' he said; Lucille seen with her children in 1984 in NYC
'I mean, that was a knife in the heart,' Lucie said of her initial feelings towards her mom's remarriage while talking to the Television Academy.
'You're kidding right? It's only been a year. Not even. So it was a rough period for all of us.'
However over time, Lucie became close to her stepfather and reflected on Ball's marriage to Gary.
'He made her laugh and didn't embarrass her in any way. He didn't drink too much. He didn't smile and giggle with the ladies. I don't know if they had a passionate marriage. I hope so.'
Her father Desi tied the knot once again, marrying Edith Hirsch in 1963. The two remained together until Edith's death in 1985 after a battle with cancer. Desi passed away the following year.
Lucie said of her late stepmother: 'She was a joy, an absolute joy. Great laugh. She taught me how to drive, she went bowling with us, she took us to the fair.'
'She knew exactly how to handle my dad,' the actress added. 'She was amazing...I really miss her.'
And despite her parents' divorce in 1960, she stated that Lucille and Desi remained close friends 'until the bitter end.'

Paige Spiranac breaks her silence on bizarre internet conspiracy theory about her
Paige Spiranac has cleared up a bizarre internet conspiracy theory after fans thought they saw her in a viral video. During the week, a video spread on X featuring a blonde woman chugging a drink and holding onto a moving golf cart. The woman then lost her grip of the vehicle before slamming hard on the ground. And while the original clip has been viewed 2.7million times on the platform, Spiranac wanted her fans to know that it wasn't her in the video. 'I would like to clear up the speculation,' she wrote. 'This is not me. We all know I wouldn't be wearing a polo.' The humorous post comes after Spiranac announced some big news in May. The social media sensation has become one of the most popular figures in the golf world The golf influencer, who failed to make it on the LPGA Tour, told fans that she'd be taking her golf knowledge to the Grass League - the first high-stakes par 3 golf league - where she will look to translate her social media success to the front office. While Spiranac didn't confirm the exact title of her new position, the Grass League announced that 'golf's most influential female voice' would be joining in a 'strategic leadership role.' 'A trailblazer in both professional golf and modern sports media, Spiranac will work closely with league leadership to shape the long-term vision and growth strategy for The Grass League,' a press release read. 'Her role will encompass brand development, storytelling, creative, business development and overall content and audience strategy, positioning the league to scale it's reach across digital, broadcast, and live experiences.' Spiranac's appointment came shortly after the league's 2025 season kickstarted earlier in May with the circuit making its debut last year. The upstart stages evening competitions at LED-lit Par 3 venues with teams representing regional franchises competing in a two-player scramble format. I would like to clear up the speculation. This is not me. We all know I wouldn't be wearing a polo. — Paige Spiranac (@PaigeSpiranac) June 21, 2025 Though Spiranac did not reach the levels she hoped to on the course, quitting the sport has turned out to be an extremely profitable career move for the golf's glamour girl. She has garnered the most followers in the golfing world with four million, beating even Tiger Woods, who pocketed $10million for finishing top of the PGA Tour's PIP, a venture designed to reward players with the biggest social media following, last year. And thanks to her army of followers, the 32-year-old is said to make as much as $10,698 per post.

Gabrielle Union reveals the 'stupid' purchase she made after cashing first big paycheck for Bring It On
Gabrielle Union revealed the 'stupid' purchase she made after cashing in her paycheck from her breakthrough film Bring It On. The 52-year-old actress, who rose to fame after starring in the cult classic cheerleading comedy in 2000, opened up about what she regretted doing when she 'made it' in Hollywood. She said that over two decades ago, she made a 'stupid' car purchase with her first big paycheck even against the advice of her father. While making an appearance at the American Black Film Festival in Miami on Thursday, June 12, she recalled her spontaneous purchase during a panel discussion. 'So stupid,' she began about her purchase, which she deemed not very worthwhile, while chatting with moderator Kelley L. Carter for her live, onstage discussion titled Sisterhood & Savings: A Conversation with Gabrielle Union. 'I went on the Mazda lot,' the movie star — who teased an upcoming sequel movie with Kirsten Dunst — recalled. 'I'm like, "Oh, I've made it when I have a Mazda." 'My dad's like, "Don't buy a brand new car. It depreciates the second you drive it off the lot",' she added. 'I walked into Mazda and I bought myself a black on black Mazda Miata with leather seats,' Union said before explaining how the car hurt her nearly every time she drove it. 'Let me tell you about leather seats in Los Angeles. Do you know I scorched myself every time I got out?' She added: 'Yeah, that was my first purchase. And it depreciated the second I drove it off the lot.' Over the years, Union as well as her husband, retired NBA star Dwyane Wade, have openly discussed their finances in the past. They previously revealed that they split their bills evenly even after getting married. Wade, 43, also previously shared that he and Union signed a prenup before they tied the knot in August 2014. While making an appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast in 2023, Wade said that they discussed it beforehand to protect each other's best interests. She said that over two decades ago, she made a 'stupid' car purchase with her first big paycheck even against the advice of her father 'So stupid,' she began about her purchase, revealing it was a 'black on black Mazda Miata with leather seats' while chatting with moderator Kelley L. Carter for her onstage discussion titled Sisterhood & Savings: A Conversation with Gabrielle Union 'I told her the same way, "I'll sign a prenup too. You're a millionaire. You got money. You work hard for yourself."' Union's decades-spanning, acclaimed career began in the 1990s with various sitcom appearances. Near the turn of the century, she landed supporting roles in 10 Things I Hate About You and She's All That, rising to fame in the 1999 romantic comedies. Union was 27 whens he starred opposite Kirsten Dunst in Bring It On. Earlier this year, Union teased an upcoming sequel and also admitted that her kids do not like the original movie. The original film starred Union and Dunst as the heads of rival cheerleading teams as they prepare for the national championships. Bring It On was a hit in its theatrical release in August 2000, taking in $90.4 million against an $11 million budget and gaining an enduring fan base. The film also spawned five direct-to-video sequels and a television movie sequel, none of which featured any of the original cast members, as well as a Broadway musical stage adaptation. Now it seems that Union and Dunst are ready to return for a sequel, with Union teasing a sequel during a March appearance on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live. She also admitted during the episode that neither of her kids — 17-year-old Zaya nor six-year-old Kaavia — enjoyed the beloved original, which comes after she opened up about husband Dwyane Wade's cancer diagnosis. Union was asked by a fan when the last time she saw Dunst, and asked about her comments about revisiting the original. 'Well, I ran into Kiki a couple of months ago. Our kids are around the same age, and her child goes to school with one of Kaav's best friends,' Union began.

Rob Gronkowski's Sports Illustrated model girlfriend Camille Kostek reveals nasty side of being a NFL WAG
Rob Gronkowski 's model partner Camille Kostek has revealed the negative side of being an NFL girlfriend. The Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, 33, has known the former Patriots star since 2013, with the tight end retiring (for a second time) three years ago. But Kostek recently revealed that she was judged by the wives of other NFL players for not being married to Gronkowski. 'I felt like I was seen as a lesser-than girlfriend because I didn't have a ring on my finger,' she said on Kristin Cavallari's 'Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour,' per US Weekly. 'But you want to know what's so interesting about that? The woman that's coming to mind [who] judged me the most, she's divorced.' Kostek and Gronkowski, who met each other when she was a cheerleader for the Patriots, did break up in 2017 before eventually getting back together. However, Kostek explained that she used her time apart from the future Hall of Famer to pursue her passions - namely becoming a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model. 'In that year, I decided to audition for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, which was on my bucket list. I cared about pursuing the things that brought me joy,' she said. 'There were so many things I was destined to want to do, and then I happened to date an athlete, and it was like, 'You are a WAG.' Kostek first modeled for SI Swimsuit in 2018, covered the magazine the following year and has been photographed for the brand every year since her debut. She was even named a 'Legend' of the brand last year. Last month, she walked the runway for SI Swimsuit in a show that included Livvy Dunne, soccer player Midge Purce and more. While Gronkowski and Kostek do not have a child together, they do share a dog named Ralphie, who the four-time Super Bowl champion mentioned when he wished his girlfriend a happy birthday back in February. 'Happy Birthday to my Dancing Queen @camillekostek !! From your incredible kindness to your infectious energy, you light up every room you walk into babe!!,' he wrote on Instagram. 'You deserve the best, not just today but always. Love you to the moon and back! And the best Momma anyone could ask for to our loving boy @ralphiegronkowski !!' Gronkowski, 36, established himself as one of the best tight ends in NFL history over an 11-year career. The University of Arizona became a favorite target of Tom Brady during their time together in New England, catching 17 touchdown passes in 2011 and winning three Super Bowls under then-Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
