Jamie Theakston has candidly revealed his struggle with laryngeal cancer in a heartfelt conversation with Davina McCall. The broadcaster from Heart Radio, at 54, was diagnosed with an aggressive variety of the disease last September, having initially thought his persisting sore throat was nothing serious.
Miraculously, Jamie has successfully beaten cancer, following multiple operations to extract a malignant growth from his vocal cords. Yet, during a recent episode of the Begin Again podcast, he reflected on how stark and unexpected the diagnosis was amidst plans for a family vacation.

Searching for words, he described the moment: "So, when I got my cancer diagnosis, it came as such a huge shock to me because it was so surprising, like there was no... it just came as such a broadside because... so, I'd had this sore throat for a while, and we were about to go on holiday. "We're going to, we're off to Japan. In fact, I think we were meant to be flying to Japan that day and my wife said, 'You should go and see someone before we go, just to get some antibiotic to clear up your throat'."
In a turn of events, Jamie sought advice from a specialist who, despite being 'lovely', possessed what Jamie felt was the 'worst bedside manner of any doctor' he had encountered. Upon examining Jamie's throat, the doctor instantly suggested cancer as the likely cause, propelling Jamie into a series of tests and scans.
A few hours after the examinations, the radio DJ went ahead with his holiday plans while waiting for the results. Despite having a splendid time, he chose not to divulge his situation to his family, bearing the burden in silence for a fortnight. "I didn't tell anyone," he confided."...At that stage, I thought, well, it might not be cancer. So, there's no point really in saying."

The truth eventually came to light when Jamie received his biopsy results, confirming the presence of early-stage cancer. He returned home to share the grave news with his wife, Sophie Siegle, who was left in deep distress.
With emotion clear in his voice, Jamie recounted: "My mum had died of cancer about a year before. And so my youngest son, he was with me when I was told my mum had died from cancer, knew that you could die. And so, I told him that it was going to be fine and that he had nothing to worry about, and that was the hardest part."
Post-diagnosis, Jamie had surgery at the Princess Grace Hospital in Central London which was initially deemed successful, but doubts lingered over whether all the cancer had been excised.

Now 54, the DJ faced further tribulations with a second operation complicated by scar tissue impacting his vocal cords. A third procedure was contemplated, though doctors warned they were verging on 'dangerously close' to a point where Jamie might lose his ability to speak permanently.
He remarked: "And so, that had now gone from being, I've got cancer that I should be able to live with to a situation where they've gone, well, 'We're now dangerously close to you not being able to talk,' which is new. I was like, wow, I hadn't really factored that into the whole equation."
Thankfully, Jamie's voice remains unharmed, and he celebrated his return to Heart Radio Breakfast, where he teams up with Amanda Holden, this January.

Upon his return, he informed his audience: "Today is the four-month anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. So it's been four months, and I'm fed up with hospitals and operations, and it's just wonderful to be back, and I've got some news for you. Because I can tell you that as of today, I'm cancer free."

Woman breaks down in tears at 'uncomfortable' sex party with boyfriend

A woman who asked her boyfriend for an open relationship has broken down in tears at a sex party on Channel 4's controversial new show. Tonight's latest instalment of Open House: The Great Sex Experiment sees newly married couple Sharmayne, 26, and Jamie, 29, from Essex push the boundaries in their relationship. The pair can be seen heading to their first social event to see whether they can find anyone suitable to join them in their open relationship. After speaking as a couple to some of the people in the Open House, the pair then split up and mingle individually. However, moments after Sharmayne sees Jamie flirting with other women, she grabs his arm and tells him that she wants to 'step out'. As the pair walk outside, drawing some suspicious looks from the other guests, Sharmayne tells Jamie: 'I just feel overwhelmed. It's just a bit much for me, the whole situation.' After Jamie replies: 'We're not obligated to do anything. This is our journey,' Sharmayne can be seen getting visibly upset before she says: 'I'm just uncomfortable.' Moments after, she begins to wipe away tears from her eyes as Jamie asks: 'Where do we go from here?' After Sharmayne says 'I don't know', she adds: 'I don't know if I'm going to be able to hold myself together now. 'I really don't want to do it. I just want to go home.' This comes after a man vomited after agreeing to let his partner sleep with another man on the show. Couple Tom and Lauren appeared on the new reality series on June 13 after agreeing to take things to another level in the bedroom after a candid discussion with non-monogamy expert Effy Blue. Afterwards, Lauren was seen reassuring Tom, adding to the camera that it was 'absolutely insane' to see him with the 'confidence' for them to have their individual fun before reuniting at the end of the night. The camera then panned to Tom rushing to the bathroom to vomit, telling Lauren it was 'going to be horrible' and that he felt 'absolutely petrified and sick' as she tried to comfort him. Following a strong reaction to the turn of events, Tom and Lauren took to social media to address viewers. On their shared Instagram story they answered a series of questions about threesomes in the bedroom. When asked if they would do a 'two male, one female' threesome, they replied: 'It's certainly something we would consider.' Another asked if they would 'play with' him and his wife and they explained: 'never say never' but they would 'want to build a connection first'. One fan asked what their 'first time' was like to which they said it was 'awkward and tense'. 'We were both nervous but learned a lot and loved it,' they added. More Trending To others they recommended swinging apps and confirmed they don't have any 'parties' in the schedule yet. 'What did you learn the most on the show,' one person asked, to which they said: 'Communication between the two of us, even the little things, and Tom learned to love the body he's in.' Open House is certainly not the first time Channel 4 has aired a provocative show, after their recent series Virgin Island, which left viewers gobsmacked and uncomfortable as 12 'adult virgins' were sent on a sex retreat. 'Edinburgh Pride is needed more than ever - things have regressed'

More info Thousands are set to take to the streets for Pride Edinburgh, and the team behind the event believe it could be 'needed now more than ever'. Jamie Love, marketing director for the event, met with Edinburgh Live ahead of the march on Saturday, June 21. With setup underway, and the Pride Village donned with a rainbow dancefloor, Jamie reminded us that people gather for 'more than just a party'. Jamie, who was victim to 'shocking' homophobic abuse on a train recently, feels things may be regressing for the LGBT+ community. Speaking to Edinburgh Live on Friday, he said: "I think we need it this year more than our previous few years. "We all know like there's been so many changes within legislation and government and this year more than ever, I think they've regressed, a lot. There's an activist spirit, you can really feel it in in comparison to other years. "I think transphobia, homophobia is probably the highest it's been in quite a while. It creates an environment where people are afraid." Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox Speaking on the reasons behind pride events around the world, Jamie continued: "The main reason really why pride exists is to better the lives of LGBT people and ensure that they have equal rights, and equal opportunities, and can live happily. I grew up in the Middle East, where it's illegal to be gay. I love going back for a holiday, but I couldn't live there. It was weird being a teenager and being the only gay in the desert sort of thing." While some question whether pride events are 'party or protest', Jamie feels the Edinburgh event combines both. He added: "There's definitely certain prides that are just a party, but I think with us being in Edinburgh - the march literally starts at parliament. We'll always be a very political movement, it'll always be a protest and have an activist spirit behind it. "The event's for everyone. I would always encourage anyone to come along, and that's the amazing thing, when you stand on stage and you look out to the crowd, it's awesome. (Image: Edinburgh Live) "You have the kind of younger teams right at the front, you've the young professionals in the middle and then families at the back - people bring their grandparents and everything. It's such a nice, community inclusive event. "That's the unique thing about Pride Edinburgh, which you don't get at other prides of this scale, is that at its core it's still very much a community event." Jamie was on his way home from receiving an inclusivity award in Glasgow on May 31 when an incident occurred, which gives insight into the ongoing need for pride events. Jamie says a man began touching his hair and irritating his colleagues, before the behaviour soon escalated when the man repeatedly called him a "f****t". Jamie said: "The most jarring part is the irony - being recognised for creating safer spaces and driving inclusion, only to be targeted for who I am hours later. It's a sobering reminder of how far we still have to go. No one should have to experience hate for simply existing. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. "I've never been in a position where I've had to call the police so it's quite sad. The guy got on as three of us were sat at a table but the train was packed. "He got on and immediately went to touch my hair. I said please don't touch me and his friend was trying to push him away. He then started getting aggressive, it was chaos. "That's when the slurs started and he started picking on a colleague of mine. It's weird going from a diversity awards night to that in a matter of hours. It's quite shocking." Ahead of Saturday's event, Council Leader Jane Meagher said: "Once again, all the colours of the rainbow will paint our city for Pride. "With the sun set to shine, this weekend's march is set to be a fantastic celebration of inclusivity and respect and we'll be flying the rainbow flag above the City Chambers to show our solidarity. It's likely to be busy in the city centre with some road closures in place at times, so please do plan ahead if you're joining in the march and have a great, safe day out."

Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster 'held responsible' for 'collapse' of star's proposal

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Sir Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster have humorously been accused of ruining a Heart Radio presenter's engagement plans. The couple celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary this week, by hopping on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to revisit the spots where they got engaged, tied the knot, and honeymooned. Back in 2005, after six years of dating, Rod proposed to Loose Women's Penny at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. They exchanged vows two years later Portofino, Italy, which was followed by a luxury yacht-based honeymoon off the coast. On Heart Radio's Breakfast Show on Friday, Jamie Theakston light-heartedly blamed Rod for derailing his own proposal plan to his now wife Sophie. Shortly after the singer's engagement was announced, Jamie remembered him and his then girlfriend being on their way to Paris by train, whom he planned to propose to. (Image: INSTAGRAM/PENNYLANCASTER) Speaking to his co-stars Amanda Holden and Ashley Roberts, he said he envisioned proposing at the Eiffel Tower, just like Rod did. "I thought the Eiffel Tower might be romantic, at the Eiffel Tower, on one knee, pop the question, job done," he shared. "It was a beautiful weekend, the sun was shining, we'd been to Paris a couple of times before, so it was a special place." Jamie went on to say that he was already "nervous" about the engagement ring through customs without Sophie noticing, which he thankfully managed to pull off. What happened next however forced him to reconsider his proposal strategy. He explained: "Anyway, she's reading a copy of Hello! Magazine, she goes, 'OMG. Do you know Rod Stewart has just got engaged to Penny Lancaster?' I said, 'Oh, really?' "She said, 'How naff is this, they did it in Paris on the Eiffel Tower'." (Image: INSTAGRAM/JAMIETHEAKSTON) After Amanda and Ashley expressed shock, he went on to say he contemplated abandoning the plan entirely. Later on in their trip, he chose to instead propose in a more intimate setting, their hotel room. "It wasn't as special as it might've been. So essentially, I hold Rod and Penny personally responsible for the complete collapse of my wedding proposal," he quipped. Despite the proposal not going exactly as planned, the most important thing was that Sophie happily said "yes". They later exchanged vows in Ditchling, Sussex and went on to become parents to two sons; Sidney, 17, and Kit, 16. As for Rod, Penny is his third wife and they have also two sons together; Alastair, 19, and Aiden, 14. The Maggie May singer is a father to eight children in total, including; Sarah, 61, Kimberly, 45, Sean, 44, Ruby, 38, Renee, 33, Liam, 30. Before Penny, he was married to Alana Stewart from 1979 to 1984, followed by Rachel Hunter from 1990 to 2006.
