‘28 Years Later' Review: Danny Boyle Delivers Severed Heads And Broken Hearts In His Gory Zombie-Horror Threequel

Now/then, now/then… The past and the present exist in perpetual tension in the gory second sequel to Danny Boyle's zombie horror franchise. 'Time didn't heal anything,' goes the tagline, and as we learned from the recent pandemic, mankind isn't always prepared for the worst. By far the most political of the three films, 28 Years Later is particularly scathing about Brexit Britain and its little-islander mentality. But it does have global relevance at a time of rising tensions across the world, bringing to mind the possibly apocryphal quote attributed to famed German physicist Albert Einstein: 'I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.' More from Deadline '28 Years Later' Walking To $56M+ WW Opening, 'Elio' Orbiting $50M+ WW As 'Dragon' Looks To Lord U.S. Box Office – Preview '28 Years Later': Sony's Danny Boyle Pic Is Biggest Advance Ticket Seller For Horror Pic YTD, Eyes $34M+ Opening '28 Years Later' $5.8M, 'Elio' $3M Previews - Friday AM Box Office It's a moot point whether the film is set precisely in the present day, since the original 28 Days Later was made in 2002, which makes this two years early. Intriguingly, it begins with a roomful of children watching Teletubbies, the BBC kids show that first broadcast in 1997, 28 years ago. The peace is shattered by an agitated woman who begs the eldest, a young boy called Jimmy, not to open the door. Nevertheless, the walking dead break in anyway and the boy runs for his life, hiding out in a church where his father is the priest. But sanctuary is short-lived; his father is an end-times Christian who welcomes in his ravenous flock and hands his horrified son a crucifix, telling him to 'have faith.' This opening scene seems more like an overture and, indeed, has very little to do with what follows for most of the film's near-two-hour running time. We then jump forward 28 years to an island community off the northeast coast. By this time, we learn, the Rage virus has been contained to Britain, while European armies patrol the coast to prevent any of its inhabitants from leaving. The island itself is cut off from the mainland via a path that only appears at low tide, and its citizens keep a constant vigil at the ramshackle but heavily fortified entrance. The island is home to 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams), who lives with his father Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and mother Isla (Jodie Comer). Confined to her bed, Isla is given to violent fits and delusional behavior, slipping in and out of rational consciousness. It is during one of these rare moments of clarity that she learns of Jamie's plans to take Spike over to the mainland, which does not go down well. Indeed, the islanders also warn Jamie that Spike is a little on the young side ('14 or 15 is more in keeping'), but off they set anyway, man and boy each armed with a bow and a quiver's supply of arrows. The trip is filmed like a father-son safari, with Spike in awe at the sheer expanse of the mainland. 'It's so big,' he marvels. 'You can go for days and weeks without seeing the coast,' Jamie tells him. The zombie hordes, meanwhile, exist for Spike to make his first kill, starting with the fat, bloated ones that writhe around on the forest floor and seem to survive on worms. 'Head and heart,' his old man reminds him as he lines up the shot. Things have changed a bit since Jamie was last there, however, and the undead have mutated; a new strain has appeared — stronger, faster, more intelligent, more alpha. Back at the island, Spike is welcomed as the returning hero, with Jamie significantly, and drunkenly, embellishing his son's bravery. It also becomes clear that Jamie is cheating on Isla, a betrayal that Spike takes personally. Believing that Jamie is simply waiting for Isla to die so that he can move on with his life and be with his mistress, Spike takes his mother on a perilous journey to the mainland, where he believes a mysterious doctor (Ralph Fiennes), the last physician still alive in the area, will be able to cure her. The first film always seemed a little far-fetched, given the speed with which seemingly rational people took up cross-dressing and cannibalism in the space of less than a month. But nearly 30 years does the trick, and Alex Garland's script makes great play of how life in Britain has become stunted. Flirting with folk horror, he makes the islanders little better than the infected, inviting comparisons with The Wicker Man as they carouse in the community center while a faded portrait of Her Majesty the Queen looks down. Spike, meanwhile, has never heard of smartphones or the internet — both of which are flourishing in the real world beyond Britain's borders — and, ever playful, Boyle often drops the ancient sound of a dial-up modem into the ominous score by Young Fathers. Good horror, though, should always be about something else, and while it takes awhile to emerge, the zombies come to represent mortality, channeling the spirit of Damien Hirst's 1991 shark piece The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. As Spike goes further upstream in search of the strikingly Colonel Kurtz-like Dr. Kelson, he learns a lot about life and death, witnessing the birth of a baby and seeing a man's head and spine ripped from his shoulders. It's a very violent film in that respect, but the emotion is more affecting than the blood, most of it generated during Fiennes' powerful 30-minute screen time. Most threequels tend to go bigger, but 28 Years Later bucks that trend by going smaller, eventually becoming a chamber piece about a boy trying to hold onto his mother. It still delivers shocks, even if the sometimes over-zealous editing distracts from Anthony Dod Mantle's painterly cinematography, but the biggest of them all is the jaw-dropping final scene, a clapback to the film's beginning and an indication of how crazy Britain has become in its lonely isolation. It's a very specific cultural reference, and seemingly comes from nowhere, but Brits in particular are likely to have a very, very visceral reaction, as it happens. Arthur Gourounlian shares weight loss secret after shedding 9lbs in just 28 days

Dancing With The Stars judge Arthur Gourounlian has revealed he has dropped 9lbs in 28 days. The Armenian-born choreographer began a health transformation last month after feeling like he was beginning to struggle running after his two young children, Blu and Blake. Since undergoing his health journey, he said he has lost an incredible 4.3kg (9lbs) of body fat, in just 28 days. 'It's honestly been fantastic,' Arthur shared. 'I didn't think a 20- minute weights session could make such a big difference—but the results speak for themselves, just look at me!' Determined to kick off his summer feeling strong and energised, Arthur worked with Educogym in Dundrum in Dublin to start his transformation. 'As daddy of my two babies, and with multiple dance, TV and video projects on the go, time is always a challenge,' Arthur admitted. 'But Educogym made it 'doable'. Just 20 minutes a session, 3 times a week, I could train, work, have fun with the girls, and still feel like I'd done something powerful for myself. That balance has been priceless.' Using advanced BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) technology, with a special 'In Body' scanner, Jamie and his team at Educogym pinpoint exactly where the body needs to change—tailoring every exercise rep, set, and meal to maximise fat loss and muscle gain. 'The secret is resistance training, great nutrition and a dedicated mindset,' says Jamie. 'We help people visualise who they want to become—fitter, stronger, more alive. Arthur had that vision from day one. He knew what he wanted to achieve, he was committed and focused. That's what powers real transformation. 'We actually lose an average of ½ lb of muscle each year once we reach the age of 30, so it is important to maintain strength and muscle tone for overall health,' said Jamie. 'Certainly, there is no magic wand to stop the effects of ageing but with our help, and with this programme people can see results very quickly.' Arthur told us previously at the Platinum VIP Style Awards: 'It's only a 20 minute workout, but it's all about the food. And I'm learning, instead of eating five sandwiches, I'm going for one. And it's kind of like, makes me feel good. And now I feel bad if I eat lots of chocolate. 'Instead of having five million KitKats, I'm having one, just a little taste, but I haven't had any sweets. It feels good. 'I have two kids. I just want to run after them. You know, longevity. 'I knew I was getting heavy after being a dancer. I was like, 'my legs are getting heavy.' 'I've got always so much energy, energy I always have. But I was like, You know what? I'm getting heavy. I'm going to try to look after myself.'

'Edinburgh Pride is needed more than ever - things have regressed'

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Thousands are set to take to the streets for Pride Edinburgh, and the team behind the event believe it could be 'needed now more than ever'. Jamie Love, marketing director for the event, met with Edinburgh Live ahead of the march on Saturday, June 21. With setup underway, and the Pride Village donned with a rainbow dancefloor, Jamie reminded us that people gather for 'more than just a party'. Jamie, who was victim to 'shocking' homophobic abuse on a train recently, feels things may be regressing for the LGBT+ community. Speaking to Edinburgh Live on Friday, he said: "I think we need it this year more than our previous few years. "We all know like there's been so many changes within legislation and government and this year more than ever, I think they've regressed, a lot. There's an activist spirit, you can really feel it in in comparison to other years. "I think transphobia, homophobia is probably the highest it's been in quite a while. It creates an environment where people are afraid." Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox Speaking on the reasons behind pride events around the world, Jamie continued: "The main reason really why pride exists is to better the lives of LGBT people and ensure that they have equal rights, and equal opportunities, and can live happily. I grew up in the Middle East, where it's illegal to be gay. I love going back for a holiday, but I couldn't live there. It was weird being a teenager and being the only gay in the desert sort of thing." While some question whether pride events are 'party or protest', Jamie feels the Edinburgh event combines both. He added: "There's definitely certain prides that are just a party, but I think with us being in Edinburgh - the march literally starts at parliament. We'll always be a very political movement, it'll always be a protest and have an activist spirit behind it. "The event's for everyone. I would always encourage anyone to come along, and that's the amazing thing, when you stand on stage and you look out to the crowd, it's awesome. (Image: Edinburgh Live) "You have the kind of younger teams right at the front, you've the young professionals in the middle and then families at the back - people bring their grandparents and everything. It's such a nice, community inclusive event. "That's the unique thing about Pride Edinburgh, which you don't get at other prides of this scale, is that at its core it's still very much a community event." Jamie was on his way home from receiving an inclusivity award in Glasgow on May 31 when an incident occurred, which gives insight into the ongoing need for pride events. Jamie says a man began touching his hair and irritating his colleagues, before the behaviour soon escalated when the man repeatedly called him a "f****t". Jamie said: "The most jarring part is the irony - being recognised for creating safer spaces and driving inclusion, only to be targeted for who I am hours later. It's a sobering reminder of how far we still have to go. No one should have to experience hate for simply existing. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. "I've never been in a position where I've had to call the police so it's quite sad. The guy got on as three of us were sat at a table but the train was packed. "He got on and immediately went to touch my hair. I said please don't touch me and his friend was trying to push him away. He then started getting aggressive, it was chaos. "That's when the slurs started and he started picking on a colleague of mine. It's weird going from a diversity awards night to that in a matter of hours. It's quite shocking." Ahead of Saturday's event, Council Leader Jane Meagher said: "Once again, all the colours of the rainbow will paint our city for Pride. "With the sun set to shine, this weekend's march is set to be a fantastic celebration of inclusivity and respect and we'll be flying the rainbow flag above the City Chambers to show our solidarity. It's likely to be busy in the city centre with some road closures in place at times, so please do plan ahead if you're joining in the march and have a great, safe day out."

28 Years Later director Danny Boyle breaks down Covid parallels in new sequel

Much-claimed director Danny Boyle has described landmarks 'being transformed' in front of our eyes during the 2020 Covid pandemic - as he reflects on the parallels to 28 Years Later lead character The film 28 Years Later explores a fictional infected mainland - and director Danny Boyle has said that the strange Covid times we lived through five years ago has helped viewers relate to the lead character Jamie. Set in a post-apocalyptic city, 28 Years Later tells the story of a highly contagious virus and its detrimental effects on the population, which leads to societal collapse. The film shows Jamie taking his 12-year-old son across a causeway to the abandoned and infected mainland. ‌ Now, Danny Boyle has spoken about the parallels to the Covid era in a Reddit Q & A, about how a city can be 'transformed overnight' yet 'still be recognisable'. During the pandemic many of us saw our towns and cities take on a new identity for a while and strange sights were spotted on high streets and of in our local supermarkets. ‌ Mr Boyle said: "What Covid did, it happened everywhere in the world, suddenly a city can be transformed overnight and still be recognisable. Suddenly it didn't just belong to movies. Who would have thought that recognisable landmarks can be transformed in front of your eyes. 'That's a wonderful opportunity for filmmakers to build on, and we duly did. That's a connection to something everyone's experienced. Over a longer period of time, after the urgency to stay safe (mask wearing, disinfecting everything, distrusting who you were meeting, was anyone sneezing in the room), you can't keep that up for very long. 'You start to explore risk. As humans, you just do. How far can I go? That increases over time. When you apply that mentality over 28 years, the amount of risks you'll take is huge. Jamie, our lead character, takes his 12-year-old son across a causeway to an infected mainland. 28 days after an outbreak he'd be a madman. But 28 years later he's a hero for bringing his son out - it reflects all our shared mentalities." Help us improve our content by completing the survey below. We'd love to hear from you! 28 Years Later writer, Alex Garland, finally confirmed that recent political events influenced the making of the third instalment. While fans of the franchise initially suspected that the global Coronavirus pandemic may have served as a massive inspiration for 28 Years Later, Alex— who directed Ex Machina and Civil War — denied any links between the upcoming zombie horror film and the global lockdowns. Instead, the Academy Award-nominee was reportedly inspired by Brexit, and claims much of 28 Years Later has been inspired by Britain's decision to leave the EU back in 2016. Speaking to Empire about the script and its influences, Alex said: "Covid was not on my mind because it was too recent and too present, but Brexit was." He noted a "sense of the globe just sort of shifting its position" and "not really looking in this direction," all of which served as inspiration for the treatment of the movie.
