Equipping youth with practical skills essential for building self-reliant, capable India: Governor

The Hindu31-05-2025

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday inaugurated the Indian Institute of Future Skills at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru.
In his inaugural address, Mr. Gehlot said that equipping youth with practical skills is essential for building a self-reliant and capable India.
He said that skill-based education is a powerful catalyst for the social and economic empowerment of rural, underprivileged, and marginalised communities. 'Only when every youth is equipped with both knowledge and practical skills can the vision of a 'Skilled and Capable India' be realised,' he said.
The Governor noted that various government initiatives—both at the Centre and in States—are helping India move towards becoming the 'Skill Capital of the World' and highlighted flagship schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, National Skill Development Mission, National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, and the Skill India Mission. These schemes were instrumental in enhancing youth employability and meeting industry demands.
'India has a demographic advantage with around 65% of the population under the age of 35. By providing this youth population with proper training and guidance, India can achieve economic, social, and technological strength on the global stage,' he remarked.
Mr. Gehlot stressed the growing importance of emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and digital marketing, describing them as vital areas that are transforming economies and creating new avenues for employment and innovation.
Praising the collaboration behind the launch of the new skill centre, the Governor lauded the joint efforts of KSOU, the National Skill Development Corporation, Skill India, and the Ethnotech Group in establishing the Indian Institute of Future Skills at KSOU. He also commended KSOU for its NAAC A+ accreditation.
Sharing a personal anecdote, the Governor recalled his early days working at the Birla company in Madhya Pradesh, where he took on multiple roles despite being appointed as a supervisor. 'Doing every kind of job helps one build comprehensive skills,' he said.
Nirmalanandanatha Swami of Sri Adichunchanagiri Math, Prakashanath Swami, managing director of SJB and BGS Group of Institutions and Hospitals, Sharanappa V. Halse, Vice-Chancellor of KSOU, Nagaraja N.M., managing director of Karnataka Skill Development Corporation, and other dignitaries were present.

Chhattisgarh's first govt-led cold chain and irradiation facility to boost tribal incomes in Dantewada

RAIPUR: In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at enhancing tribal incomes and reducing post-harvest losses, Dantewada district in southern Chhattisgarh is establishing an integrated cold chain and multi-product food irradiation facility at Patarras village. This cutting-edge infrastructure, the first government-led facility of its kind in India under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) is poised to transform how forest and horticultural produce is stored, processed, and marketed in the Bastar region. Dantewada and the surrounding districts are rich in Minor Forest Produce (MFP) such as tamarind, mahua, wild mango, millets, and indigenous spices. However, due to the absence of proper storage, preservation processes, and value addition infrastructure, an estimated 10–20 per cent of these produce are lost or perish each year. To address these critical issues, land acquisition for the project has been completed, and an agreement has been signed with the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology to implement irradiation technology. The facility is now on track to become operational. This comprehensive facility integrates cold storage, gamma irradiation, processing, and logistics infrastructure to extend the shelf life of produce, reduce spoilage, and significantly improve marketability.

Technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work: Minister

Mysuru: In the coming years, technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work, much like how wars are now fought with technology, said HC Mahadevappa, minister for social welfare and Mysuru district minister. Addressing a gathering at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) auditorium on Friday, he urged pourakarmikas (civic workers) to ensure their children are well-educated and aim for higher positions in society. The occasion marked the distribution of permanent appointment order letters to pourakarmikas who are now permanent employees. Out of 10,000 pourakarmikas made permanent across Karnataka, 219 belong to the Mysuru City Corporation. Highlighting the transformation, the minister said that these workers, who earlier earned around Rs 17,000 per month, will now receive double the salary along with full govt benefits. "This permanent status will help workers lead a more dignified life and elevate their families socially and economically," he said. Mahadevappa also compared conditions in other states, noting that in Madhya Pradesh, pourakarmikas are paid only Rs 10,000—below minimum wage standards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo He reassured that more regularisation drives would be conducted in Karnataka to benefit more workers. Urging financial prudence, the minister advised pourakarmikas not to waste their increased earnings but instead invest wisely in their families' future. Responding to a request by former mayor Narayan regarding the 88 temporary pourakarmikas who died while on duty, the minister instructed the MCC commissioner to take appropriate steps to support their families. Avinash S, a civic worker, shared his personal experience, expressing gratitude to the govt. "Earlier, I struggled with a meagre salary of Rs 17,000. Now, with a permanent job and better income, I feel motivated and can finally think about marriage and a secure future," he said. Narasimharaja MLA Tanveer Sait, deputy commissioner Lakshikanth Reddy, MCC commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, former mayor and Pourakarmika leader Narayan, and pourakarmika leader Mara were present.

"Great news for education sector": PM Modi hails India's 2026 QS World University Rankings

New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The QS World University 2026 Rankings bring great news for our education sector, as the government is committed to furthering research and innovation ecosystems for the benefit of India's youth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday, highlighting how India added 43 more universities in the list since 2014. 'The QS World University 2026 Rankings bring great news for our education sector. Our Government is committed to furthering research and innovation ecosystems for the benefit of India's youth,' the Prime Minister wrote in a post on X. Reposting the post by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the improvement in India's ranking, from having only 11 universities in the QS world university rankings in 2014 to 54 Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) being included this year. India has achieved its strongest-ever performance in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with 54 institutions making it to the global list, a 390 per cent increase over the past decade and the highest growth among G20 countries. Calling the increase in the institutions being included in the list, Union Minister Pradhan highlighted it as a 'testament to the transformative educational reforms ushered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.' The Union Minister underlined that India has the 'fastest growing education system' among the G20 countries, and the fourth most represented, only behind the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. 'With a record 54 HEIs featuring among the global best, India hits a new high in the QS World University 2026 Rankings. From just 11 universities in 2014 to 54 in the latest rankings, this five-fold jump is a testament to the transformative educational reforms ushered in by the PM Narendra Modi govt. in the last decade. NEP 2020 is not just changing our educational landscape, it is revolutionising it,' Pradhan mentioned in a post on X. According to QS World University Rankings 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has emerged as the country's top-ranked institution, securing the 123rd spot globally -- a jump of 27 places from last year's position of 150. IIT Bombay and IIT Madras followed at 129th and 180th, respectively. Notably, IIT Madras entered the global top 200 for the first time. The rankings, released by global higher education analysts QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), cover over 1,500 universities from 106 countries and territories. India is now the fourth most represented country, behind only the United States (192), the United Kingdom (90), and Mainland China (72). (ANI)
