Chhattisgarh's first govt-led cold chain and irradiation facility to boost tribal incomes in Dantewada
RAIPUR: In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at enhancing tribal incomes and reducing post-harvest losses, Dantewada district in southern Chhattisgarh is establishing an integrated cold chain and multi-product food irradiation facility at Patarras village.
This cutting-edge infrastructure, the first government-led facility of its kind in India under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) is poised to transform how forest and horticultural produce is stored, processed, and marketed in the Bastar region.
Dantewada and the surrounding districts are rich in Minor Forest Produce (MFP) such as tamarind, mahua, wild mango, millets, and indigenous spices. However, due to the absence of proper storage, preservation processes, and value addition infrastructure, an estimated 10–20 per cent of these produce are lost or perish each year.
To address these critical issues, land acquisition for the project has been completed, and an agreement has been signed with the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology to implement irradiation technology. The facility is now on track to become operational.
This comprehensive facility integrates cold storage, gamma irradiation, processing, and logistics infrastructure to extend the shelf life of produce, reduce spoilage, and significantly improve marketability.

Dantewada and surrounding districts are home to abundant Minor Forest Produce (MFP) such as tamarind, mahua, wild mango, millets, and indigenous spices, among others. The sorry state of affairs remains that 10-20 per cent of these produce are either perished or lost annually due to the lack of proper storage to reduce the risk of spoilage, preservation process and value addition infrastructure. An effective solution has now been followed to minimise such losses. The land acquisition has been completed, and an agreement has been signed with the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology for irradiation technology. The facility is scheduled to become operational in the district. The new beneficial facility addresses the critical need by combining cold storage, gamma irradiation, processing, and logistics infrastructure to extend shelf life, reduce spoilage, and improve the marketability of local products. The Dantewada administration has already identified markets for the locals in Raipur, Visakhapatnam and other key locations. 'This is the first such government-led initiative in the country under PMKSY. The service or convenience is not just an infrastructure project -- it's a game-changer for tribal livelihoods. It will help our forest produce collectors and farmers get better prices, reduce wastage, and participate in larger markets. Over time, it will energise the rural economy of Bastar and create a value chain that truly belongs to the people here,' Kunal Dudawat, Dantewada Collector, told TNIE. By reducing losses and enhancing profitability, it will increase incomes for tribal producers and create scope of local employment across the supply chain. The entire project is funded by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) in Dantewada. The government stated that keeping value addition within the region will ensure that more income stays with the Bastar tribal communicates who produce it. The initiative is also aligned with regional development strategies to minimise left-wing extremism by expanding access to sustainable livelihoods.

Reposting the post by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the improvement in India's ranking, from having only 11 universities in the QS world university rankings in 2014 to 54 Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs) being included this year. India has achieved its strongest-ever performance in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with 54 institutions making it to the global list, a 390 per cent increase over the past decade and the highest growth among G20 countries. Calling the increase in the institutions being included in the list, Union Minister Pradhan highlighted it as a 'testament to the transformative educational reforms ushered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.' The Union Minister underlined that India has the 'fastest growing education system' among the G20 countries, and the fourth most represented, only behind the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. 'With a record 54 HEIs featuring among the global best, India hits a new high in the QS World University 2026 Rankings. From just 11 universities in 2014 to 54 in the latest rankings, this five-fold jump is a testament to the transformative educational reforms ushered in by the PM Narendra Modi govt. in the last decade. NEP 2020 is not just changing our educational landscape, it is revolutionising it,' Pradhan mentioned in a post on X. According to QS World University Rankings 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has emerged as the country's top-ranked institution, securing the 123rd spot globally -- a jump of 27 places from last year's position of 150. IIT Bombay and IIT Madras followed at 129th and 180th, respectively. Notably, IIT Madras entered the global top 200 for the first time. The rankings, released by global higher education analysts QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), cover over 1,500 universities from 106 countries and territories.
