Technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work: Minister
Mysuru: In the coming years, technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work, much like how wars are now fought with technology, said HC Mahadevappa, minister for social welfare and Mysuru district minister. Addressing a gathering at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) auditorium on Friday, he urged pourakarmikas (civic workers) to ensure their children are well-educated and aim for higher positions in society. The occasion marked the distribution of permanent appointment order letters to pourakarmikas who are now permanent employees. Out of 10,000 pourakarmikas made permanent across Karnataka, 219 belong to the Mysuru City Corporation. Highlighting the transformation, the minister said that these workers, who earlier earned around Rs 17,000 per month, will now receive double the salary along with full govt benefits. "This permanent status will help workers lead a more dignified life and elevate their families socially and economically," he said. Urging financial prudence, the minister advised pourakarmikas not to waste their increased earnings but instead invest wisely in their families' future. Responding to a request by former mayor Narayan regarding the 88 temporary pourakarmikas who died while on duty, the minister instructed the MCC commissioner to take appropriate steps to support their families. Avinash S, a civic worker, shared his personal experience, expressing gratitude to the govt. "Earlier, I struggled with a meagre salary of Rs 17,000. Now, with a permanent job and better income, I feel motivated and can finally think about marriage and a secure future," he said. Appointment letters handed over to pourakarmikas in Mysuru city
The credit for Mysuru's 'Clean City' tag goes to pourakarmikas, said Minister in charge of Mysuru district H.C. Mahadevappa while handing over appointment letters confirming their status as regular government employees. Speaking at a function at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru on Friday, Mr. Mahadevappa said the pourakarmikas will now be entitled to all the benefits of government employees. 'Today, all of you are becoming permanent government employees. You will be entitled to all the benefits that government employees in the State recieve,' he said. Pointing out that the pourkarmikas had even been sent for training to Singapore, Mr. Mahadevappa said the very spirit of the Constitution is to give first priority to the most marginalised. 'Our government is pro-civic workers and will ensure all necessary facilities for you,' he added. He emphasised that children of civic workers should receive higher education and reach high positions. 'Everyone should become educated. The government has many schemes – make good use of them,' he said. Tanveer Sait, MLA, congratulated the pourakarmikas for achieving success in their struggle to become regular employees. 'Across the country, lakhs of civic labourers are working on a contract basis. Because of the bold steps taken by the State government, your dream has now come true,' he said. He pointed out that local bodies are densely populated, and emphasised the need to maintain cleanliness. Acknowledging the hardword put in by the pourakarmikas to keep the city clean, especially during Dasara when tourists from different States and foreign countries visit Mysuru, Mr. Sait said the grandeur of the festivities is elevated because of the efforts of the pourakarmikas in keeping the city clean. With the government confirming their employment, Mr. Sait called upon the civic workers to do their job with more responsibility. Former Mayor Narayan said the pourakarmikas should take advantage of the State government's scheme to regularise their employment and work towards building a better future for their children. Students should aim to become real heroes: KHB chief
Mysuru: Students should not limit their dreams to just seeing film actors and cricket players, or taking photos and selfies with them. They should aim to become real heroes and heroines by succeeding in competitive exams, advised Karnataka Housing Board commissioner KA Dayananda. Speaking at the closing ceremony of an IAS and KAS exam training camp organised in collaboration with Karnataka State Open University at the Cauvery auditorium on Tuesday, he emphasised the importance of dreams and the clarity needed to achieve goals. He advised students to pass competitive exams and strive to quickly overcome challenging situations. He further stated that dreams without continuous hard work are meaningless. "Students should study diligently and avoid procrastination. They should not waste even a minute and should remain engaged in their studies until they achieve their goals," he added. Today's youth are intelligent, but they lack patience and effort. They do not distinguish between good and bad and are unaware of the depth of hunger. This is why they get caught in stampedes like Chinnaswamy while trying to see their film or sports hero. If the youth had an awareness of hunger and literacy, they would grow to become truly famous individuals, he said. KSOU vice-chancellor Sharanappa V Halase, registrar of exams Anand Kumar, and KSOU competitive exam centre coordinator Jainahalli Sathyanarayana Gowda were present.

10k foresters in Karnataka to receive KSDL kits
Mysuru: In recognition of their role in forest protection, 10,000 forest guards/watchers, mahouts, and drivers in Karnataka will receive quality kits containing a bag, jerkin, shoes, and a water bottle from Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL). The first event of this CSR initiative will be held at the convocation hall of Karnataka State Open University in Mysuru on Wednesday, stated large and medium industries minister MB Patil in a release. The minister said that KSDL's CSR fund of Rs 2 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal year was utilised to purchase these kits. The essential ingredient for KSDL's flagship product, Mysore Sandal soap, is sandalwood oil. Forest guards are the protectors of this resource, and this initiative reflects our concern for them, he said. The kits will be distributed to 2,168 personnel from the forest divisions of Chamarajanagar and Mysuru districts. Forest minister Eshwar Khandre and KSDL chairman CS Nadagouda, along with local representatives, will be present during the event. Patil mentioned that kits will also be distributed to staff working in other forest areas in Karnataka in the coming days. Measurements were taken in advance from each recipient to purchase the jerkins and shoes. Among them, 5,000 are permanent staff, while the rest work on a temporary basis. Ensuring their welfare is our responsibility, he said.

Equipping youth with practical skills essential for building self-reliant, capable India: Governor
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday inaugurated the Indian Institute of Future Skills at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru. In his inaugural address, Mr. Gehlot said that equipping youth with practical skills is essential for building a self-reliant and capable India. He said that skill-based education is a powerful catalyst for the social and economic empowerment of rural, underprivileged, and marginalised communities. 'Only when every youth is equipped with both knowledge and practical skills can the vision of a 'Skilled and Capable India' be realised,' he said. The Governor noted that various government initiatives—both at the Centre and in States—are helping India move towards becoming the 'Skill Capital of the World' and highlighted flagship schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, National Skill Development Mission, National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, and the Skill India Mission. These schemes were instrumental in enhancing youth employability and meeting industry demands. 'India has a demographic advantage with around 65% of the population under the age of 35. By providing this youth population with proper training and guidance, India can achieve economic, social, and technological strength on the global stage,' he remarked. Mr. Gehlot stressed the growing importance of emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and digital marketing, describing them as vital areas that are transforming economies and creating new avenues for employment and innovation. Praising the collaboration behind the launch of the new skill centre, the Governor lauded the joint efforts of KSOU, the National Skill Development Corporation, Skill India, and the Ethnotech Group in establishing the Indian Institute of Future Skills at KSOU. He also commended KSOU for its NAAC A+ accreditation. Sharing a personal anecdote, the Governor recalled his early days working at the Birla company in Madhya Pradesh, where he took on multiple roles despite being appointed as a supervisor. 'Doing every kind of job helps one build comprehensive skills,' he said. Nirmalanandanatha Swami of Sri Adichunchanagiri Math, Prakashanath Swami, managing director of SJB and BGS Group of Institutions and Hospitals, Sharanappa V. Halse, Vice-Chancellor of KSOU, Nagaraja N.M., managing director of Karnataka Skill Development Corporation, and other dignitaries were present.
