Obscene content: ‘Grup Budak-budak Sekolah Rendah' FB page shut down

JOHOR BAHRU (June 15): A Facebook group dubbed 'Grup Budak-budak Sekolah Rendah', which allegedly circulated indecent images of teenage girls, has been shut down, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
She said the Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), had contacted Meta to disable the Facebook account.
'I do not wish to comment further as the investigation is ongoing, but I would like to stress that MCMC will continue to work with the police to take follow-up action and carry out further investigations,' she said after attending a charity sale and cultural performance programme at a shopping mall here today.
Social media influencer Mek Yun, 28, whose real name is Wee Yun Nee, had earlier exposed the existence of the group and urged the authorities to act swiftly to curb the spread of immoral content.
According to Teo, the MCMC, in collaboration with the police, launched Op Pedo last year, resulting in the arrest of 13 individuals and the discovery of more than 40,000 child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) and other pornographic content.
Meanwhile, she said the government was actively implementing the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), targeting students at the primary, secondary and tertiary education levels.
'To date, the MCMC has carried out the programme in 53 schools, involving 11,389 participants comprising pupils, students, teachers and parents.
'Our target from May to August is to implement the KIS in 344 schools nationwide, including at least 20 schools in Johor,' she said.
Teo said the campaign focused on educating students about cyberbullying, the importance of personal data security, and the dangers of interacting with strangers online.
'We encourage all interested schools to contact the MCMC office so that we can arrange training sessions and talks on digital safety,' she said.
Teo also called on parents to play a role in educating their children on the safe and responsible use of the internet. – Bernama

GEORGE TOWN: Two men, including a senior citizen, suffered a loss of RM2.35 million after each fell victim to online investment fraud syndicates, in separate incidents in Penang recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in the first case, the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (BSJK) of Seberang Perai Tengah district police headquarters received a complaint from a 57-year-old local man who is an insurance agent in Perai, yesterday after suffering a loss of almost RM1.5 million. 'According to the man, he had seen a stock investment advertisement promising high returns on Facebook in December and the victim then contacted the female suspect via the WhatsApp application. 'The investment offered various packages with promises of lucrative returns and the victim was interested in participating, before downloading the stock investment application and on Dec 30 made the first transfer of RM9,999 and earning a profit of RM18,400,' he said in a statement today. He said that following that his confidence grew in the investment, the victim then made 35 money transfers between Feb 17 and April 24 into seven bank accounts belonging to different companies involving a total of RM1,495,176. Hamzah said the man only realised he had been a victim of fraud after failing to withdraw profits on the investment application and was even asked to make an additional payment. For the second case, he said a 73-year-old elderly man who is a retired accountant at a factory had filed a police report at north-east police headquarters yesterday after also falling victim to an online investment scam involving a loss of RM855,001. 'According to the victim, he saw an investment advertisement for cryptocurrency investments that offered high profits in a short period of time on Facebook in March and the elderly person clicked on the advertisement link before contacting the female suspect via the WhatsApp application,' he said. Hamzah said the victim joined and downloaded the investment application before making 14 transactions to five bank accounts belonging to different companies from April 15 to June 11, but did not receive any profits. He said further investigations were being carried out to trace the fraud syndicate network and both cases were being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which is cheating.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has called on the authorities to swiftly implement comprehensive measures to tackle the increasingly alarming crime of online child sexual exploitation. In a Facebook post today, she stressed that all forms of cyber threats, particularly those targeting children, must be addressed firmly and without delay. Her call came in response to the shocking discovery of a Facebook group dubbed 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah', which allegedly shares sexually explicit content involving primary schoolchildren and has over 12,000 members. 'It is understood that several existing legal provisions can be used to prosecute perpetrators of online sexual crimes against this group, and the move is very much welcomed. 'However, there are still many gaps that need to be addressed, weaknesses that should be improved, and follow-up actions that must be implemented immediately to protect those most vulnerable to this threat,' she said in the post. Nurul Izzah said perpetrators of sexual crimes were becoming increasingly sophisticated, including by using technology and the dark web to cover their tracks. In this regard, she proposed that a structured, firm and comprehensive effort be initiated by government agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM). She also urged the Ministry of Communications and MCMC to present a clear, transparent and effective monitoring mechanism to assess the level of digital protection for children. In addition, she called on KPWKM and PDRM to release public reports on both current and previous cases related to online sexual crimes in the interest of transparency and full accountability to the people.

PETALING JAYA: Nurul Izzah Anwar has called for immediate and coordinated government action to combat online child sexual exploitation. The PKR deputy president described the issue as a 'national disgrace' that demanded collective responsibility from the authorities and society. Her remarks come in the wake of the exposure of a Facebook group, Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah, which had amassed more than 12,000 members who were allegedly sharing and passively viewing sexually explicit content involving primary school children. "This is not just an alarming incident; it is a national disgrace. "Shutting down the group is not enough. We need immediate, coordinated and decisive actions,' she said in a statement Sunday (June 22). She urged agencies such as the Communications Ministry, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), police and the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to intensify efforts against digital predators preying on children. She called on the MCMC and the Communications Ministry to disclose their current monitoring mechanisms and to demonstrate their effectiveness in detecting child exploitation online. She also urged police and the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to release public updates on the recent case and similar cases that have remained outside public scrutiny. Nurul Izzah also demanded a progress report on the implementation of the Online Safety Act and a briefing in Parliament on the effectiveness of the D11 sexual crimes unit, including additional funding to enhance its operations. Nurul Izzah stressed that while legal tools exist to tackle online sexual crimes, many gaps remain in terms of enforcement, awareness and prevention. According to official 2023 data, child sexual crimes increased by 26.5%, while child pornography cases surged by an alarming 139.3%. 'These are not just numbers. They are a collective cry for immediate, systemic reform, not just well-worded laws that gather dust,' she said. She announced that PKR is launching a grassroots campaign to focus on raising public awareness, creating safe spaces for children and strengthening community partnerships with NGOs and educational institutions. 'Parents, teachers, religious leaders, NGOs and the public must rise to protect our children from this growing digital threat,' she said.
