Safe Internet Campaign reaches 11,839 participants nationwide

Teo said the campaign, launched in January in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), educational institutions and relevant agencies, aims to enhance digital literacy and promote a safer online environment, particularly for the younger generation. The campaign seeks to reach over 10,000 educational institutions nationwide by year-end, focusing on four key areas: cyberbullying, online scams and gambling, child sexual exploitation, as well as data protection and digital literacy. 'Between May and August, the campaign is scheduled to be held in 344 schools nationwide, including 64 in Sabah. 'The response has been encouraging, and we aim to deliver the programme using interactive approaches,' Teo told reporters after attending the campaign at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan (SRK) Sung Siew today, where 120 Year Four to Year Six pupils took part in the session. Teo said strong collaboration with the Ministry of Education has been instrumental in ensuring the success of the Safe Internet Campaign, particularly in helping students better understand the importance of cybersecurity. She also called on all stakeholders to work together in fostering a safe, healthy and positive digital environment by actively participating in awareness modules, talks and campaign activities to empower communities against cyber threats. 'We cannot deny that children today have (easy) access to gadgets and the internet. It is therefore essential, especially for parents, to take an active role in monitoring their children's online activities. 'We must raise awareness and educate the public, especially children, on digital literacy so they understand the importance of not sharing photos or personal data online. They need to be taught how to use the internet responsibly and about the risks involved,' she said Teo stressed that the Safe Internet Campaign should evolve into a national movement to nurture a generation that is smarter and more ethical in its use of the internet. – Bernama

Sandakan journalist battling anaemia receives Tabung Kasih@HAWANA aid

Merdeka Daily News journalist Jee Cheng Yee, 35, said the cash contribution would help ease the burden of her medical and treatment expenses. The mother of three – aged eight, four, and 11 months – shared that she developed anaemia following caesarean sections during the birth of her children. 'I'm very grateful to the Sabah Journalists Association and the Sandakan Media Association for assisting me with the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA application process,' said Jee, who has been a journalist for 10 years and is currently based in Sandakan. 'I hope this kind of assistance can reach and support more journalists who are in need,' she said when met at her residence in Taman Yeng Seng here. Also present at the visit were Malaysian National News Agency's (Bernama) head of Management Services and Finance, Sharifah Zaini Syed Zain, and head of Corporate Affairs, Mariati Mohd Arif. Meanwhile, Teo said a total of 19 media practitioners in Sabah have benefited from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative to date. She added that RM1 million has been allocated for the fund this year, expressing hope that more media personnel in need would receive the assistance. 'We will consider all applications and determine the donation amount based on each individual's circumstances,' she said. The Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia MADANI by upholding values of compassion and care, particularly for media practitioners who have long contributed to society but are now facing life or health challenges. The fund was established as a Communications Ministry initiative and implemented through Bernama to support serving and retired journalists and other media practitioners who are facing hardships or financial difficulties. To date, a total of 442 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the initiative, with contributions amounting to RM1.2 million. – Bernama

Communications Ministry Ready To Help Pulau Berhala Women Become e-Entrepreneurs
SANDAKAN, June 17 (Bernama) -- The Communications Ministry is ready to assist a group of women in Pulau Berhala here to become e-entrepreneurs, leveraging their handmade sewing products and the island's strong internet connectivity. Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching said the women had acquired sewing skills through classes held at the Kampung Pulau Berhala Women's Community Centre, an initiative by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee. 'It is time to create opportunities for these women to venture into e-commerce. With the island's reliable 4G coverage, they can market their products not only locally but also abroad if there is demand. 'If this initiative takes off, I can invite platforms like Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop to hold training sessions here to help the women learn how to sell their products online,' she told reporters after visiting the community centre with Vivian today. Teo said the handcrafted products made by the Bajau women, including pillows, hair ribbons and traditional Bajau attire, had strong commercial potential. Meanwhile, Vivian said the two-year effort to establish the community centre had paid off, with local women showing keen interest in the sewing activities offered there. 'We want Pulau Berhala women to become financially independent. Besides sewing classes, we plan to introduce lessons in cooking, traditional pastry making and batik painting. We have already identified instructors willing to teach,' she said. Housewife Rina Rameo Abdullah, 51, said the centre had greatly benefited her by helping her develop sewing skills and earn income while spending her time productively. 'I sew traditional Bajau attire known as 'Sablai'. In the early morning, I sell kuih, and after that, I come to the centre to sew clothes that are worn during festive occasions,' she said.

37 CEMI Applications Received As Of June 12
SANDAKAN, June 16 (Bernama) -- The Concert and Event in Malaysia Incentives (CEMI), a financial rebate initiative introduced by the Communications Ministry through MyCreative Ventures (MyCV) on May 15, has received 37 applications as of June 12, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She stated that the government had allocated RM10 million for CEMI to boost the local creative industry through strategic partnerships in concert and event management nationwide. 'I strongly encourage industry players, especially those in Sabah, to take this opportunity and apply for the incentive before the application deadline on July 10, 2025. 'CEMI covers two types of applications for concerts and events featuring international or local artistes. The incentive aims to support the organisation of large-scale concerts and music events for 15,000 people and more,' she told reporters after opening the 'Ask Me Anything' road tour for the 2025 Creative Content Fund (DKK) – Music Industry by MYCV here today. She noted that the growth of the concert industry in Malaysia has generated significant returns for the country, prompting the introduction of the incentive. 'In 2023, a total of 335 international concerts were held in Malaysia, contributing over RM498 million to the national economy. In 2024, this number rose to 408 international concerts, generating RM553 million in returns,' she said. Meanwhile, Teo urged the arts and creative community in Sabah and Sarawak to apply for the DKK provided by the government as part of efforts to develop a competitive and impactful music industry. 'The government has allocated RM6.3 million for DKK. Three DKK programmes are being actively implemented, including the Music Performance Fund, which is open for applications until June 30,' she said, adding the deadline for the International Marketing and Promotion Fund and the Domestic Marketing and Promotion Fund is on Dec 1.
