Kaitlyn Dever out front in Drama Guest Actress Emmy odds for killer ‘The Last of Us' role
This year's Emmy race for Best Drama Guest Actress is shaping up to be a battle between The Last of Us and Severance.
Two guest stars from each show appear in Gold Derby's top four spots: Kaitlyn Dever and Catherine O'Hara for HBO's zombie apocalypse adaptation, and Gwendoline Christie and Merritt Wever for Apple TV+'s sci-fi workplace series. Our predicted lineup of six is rounded out by Cherry Jones for The Handmaid's Tale and Hilary Swank for Yellowjackets.

Dever appears in three episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 as Abby, a soldier who seeks revenge against Joel (Pedro Pascal) for murdering her father. When she finally locates him, Abby and her group of followers torture and beat Joel to death with a golf club, in front of his daughter figure, Ellie (Bella Ramsey). The cycle of revenge violence continues, as Ellie takes it upon herself to kill everyone associated with Abby until the two come face to face in the finale. In 2023, Dever received the first Emmy bid of her career, for her supporting turn on Dopesick. She has also appeared in projects like Justified, Unbelievable, and Apple Cider Vinegar, the latter of which she'll be on this year's Emmy ballot for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress.

O'Hara plays Gail on The Last of Us, a therapist at the encampment who continues to see Joel, despite him being responsible for murdering Gail's husband, Eugene (Joe Pantoliano), who had been infected by a zombie bite. Like Dever, O'Hara could be a two-time Emmy nominee this year; she also has a key supporting role as a fired movie producer on The Studio. The veteran actress has two Emmy Awards on her mantel, for starring on Schitt's Creek (2020) and for writing SCTV Network (1982).
Christie's role of Lorne, an anti-social goatherd in Severance Season 2, stood out for its sheer uniqueness. Much of her scenes are shared with Adam Scott's Mark S., who stumbles upon Lorne's Mammalians Nurturable division while trying to uncover what happened to his missing wife. This would be Christie's second career Emmy nomination, after previously earning a bid for her breakout role of Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones (2019).
Wever also made her Severance debut in the second season, though her character is much more grounded and driven by emotion. She portrays Gretchen George, the wife of Zach Cherry's outie character, Dylan George. Their marriage has become stale over the years, but Gretchen soon rekindles her love for him by secretly meeting with his innie version, Dylan G., under the watchful eye of Miss Huang (Sarah Bock). Wever is already a two-time Emmy champion for the comedy series Nurse Jackie (2013) and the limited series Godless (2018).
Jones returned to The Handmaid's Tale for the final season as Holly Maddox, the feminist mother of June (Elisabeth Moss). Only this time, she was seen in the present-day story (as opposed to flashbacks) after June found her alive and working at a refugee camp in Alaska. In the series finale, Holly convinces her daughter to write a book about everything she's accomplished as an escaped handmaid who helped take down Gilead. Jones has three Emmys to her name for 24 (supporting, 2009), The Handmaid's Tale (guest, 2019), and Succession (guest, 2020).
Rounding out Gold Derby's top six is Swank for Yellowjackets. She plays the adult version of Jenna Burgess' Melissa, a member of the girls' soccer team who crashed in a plane and survived in the wilderness. In the present, Melissa starts a new life as Kelly after faking her death by suicide. Swank is a double Best Actress Oscar winner for Boys Don't Cry (1999) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), though this would be her first Emmy nomination.
Others in the running for a Best Drama Guest Actress Emmy nomination include Tati Gabrielle (The Last of Us), Jane Alexander (Severance), Julie Hagerty (Matlock), Sydney Cole Alexander (Severance), Angela Bassett (Doctor Odyssey), and Rebecca Tilney (The Pitt). Note that contenders like Gabrielle, who were not officially submitted by a network or studio, can still enter their own names for Emmy consideration.

According to sources, production in Austin, TX was paused late last week, with the cast, which includes fellow stars Holland Taylor, Natalie Martinez and Brittany Ishibashi, sent home. The development, which involves the departure of showrunner David West Read, comes as eight of the series' 10 ordered episodes have been shot. The makeup of the brothers comedy series is unusual — its stars/executive producers McConaughey and Harrelson are real stakeholders as the project is loosely inspired by their real-life longtime friendship. The untitled brothers series stars Harrelson and McConaughey in a heartfelt, odd couple love story revolving around their strange and beautiful bond. Matthew and Woody's friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew's ranch in Texas. The cast also includes series regulars Oona Yaffe, Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton and Noah Carganilla. Skydance Television is producing the series for Apple TV+. Vampire Thriller ‘Sinners' Gets HBO Max Streaming Premiere Date

Rated R, Sinners opens in theaters on April 18 and debuted on digital streaming via premium video on demand on June 3. The official logline for Sinners reads, 'Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.' Jordan stars as the twin brothers, Smoke and Stack. Now,just over a month after the film made its PVOD debut, Sinners will be coming to streaming on HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced Friday that Sinners would arrive on HBO Max on Friday, July 4. The film will then debut on HBO linear on Saturday, July 5, at 8 p.m. ET. For viewers who don't subscribe to Max, the streaming service offers an ad-based package for $9.99 per month, an ad-free package for $16.99 per month and an ad-free package with 4K Ultra HD Programming for $20.99 per month. Sinners' quick arrival on the streaming service isn't a complete surprise. The Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform fast-tracked the release of A Minecraft Movie to the HBO Max five weeks after its debut on May 13. A Minecraft Movie is new on the streaming service Friday. 'Sinners' Was A Major Hit At The Box Office Sinners is still playing in theaters and will remain in 536 venues this weekend. To date, the film has earned $276.4 million domestically and $85.4 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $361.9 million against a $90 production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to The Numbers. Sinners also quickly became a big hit on PVOD, as it quickly staked out the No. 1 spot on many digital purchase charts in its first week of release. The film will also be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, July 8. Like those who purchased a digital copy of the film, the 4K and Blu-ray versions of Sinners will also contain bonus material including four production featurettes. Sinners was also a big hit with Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film a 97% 'fresh' rating based on 375 reviews. The film also received a 96% 'fresh' Popcornmeter score on RT, based on 25,000-plus verified user ratings. Also starring Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wumni Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo, Sinners will arrive on HBO Max on July 4 and HBO linear on July 5 at 8 p.m. ET.

Best Drama Writing Emmy predictions: ‘The Pitt' takes a risk by submitting 3 episodes
Ballots for the 2025 Emmys have officially been released and voting is currently underway in all categories. For Best Drama Series Writing, there are 132 submissions, which means there will be six finalists for the category when nominations are announced July 15. When it comes to writing, there are two strategic approaches when it comes to seeking a slot: submit one showcase episode or flood the zone. This year, as is often the case, practically all of the frontrunners are opting for the former tactic. This includes the incumbent winner Will Smith for Slow Horses, who is the only nominee from last year eligible again. He could win his second consecutive Emmy for the Season 4 finale, a shattering, suspenseful episode surrounding River Cartwright (Jack Lowden). It's just as devastating, with a race against time and multiple story turns, capped by a final twist that has left fans wanting more. READ: The second episode of The Last of Us, written by showrunner Craig Mazin, features a brutal battle that ends in a tragic, heartbreaking death and changes the trajectory of the entire series. And there are standout, lengthy monologues in submissions from both The White Lotus — Sam Rockwell's 10-minute treatise on sex, incest, and suicidal attempts — and Andor, which features Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma delivering an all-too-relevant speech on the manipulation of power and truth -- a theme similar to teleplay that earned the Star Wars series a writing nomination in its first season. Nontheless, we expect The Pitt pilot to make the cut. The other notable series to push multiple scripts was The Handmaid's Tale. For its final season, the Emmy-winning series submitted the last three episodes for consideration. Most of the rest of the top contenders put forward either their pilots/premieres or their finales. This include The Day of the Jackal, Black Doves, Paradise, and Squid Game for the former, and The Diplomat for the latter. Two other possibilities for those six slots are Bad Sisters, a previous nominee for last season, for its penultimate episode, and Industry, for its fourth installment, featuring some of the most intense dialogue and high stakes.
