Utah's Hockey Team Down To Three Name Options; Could The Islanders Have Been Called Something Else?
After the rapid decision to move the Arizona Coyotes to Utah ahead of the 2024-25 season, the next order of business was to come up with a name.
Jazz owner and now Utah hockey team owner Ryan Smith (no, not former Islanders forward for 23 total games Ryan Smyth) has left the team name up to a fan vote
This week, it was announced that Utah Yeti was out as a name. Here are the three choices:
With Utah Yetis out of the running due to trademark issues, the top three remaining names are Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth and Utah Wasatch.Fans will vote on their favorite this week at Delta Center.

Sure, you can throw in the Nashville Predators as a good name rivalry as well, maybe suited better for the Mammoth like in the movie Ice Age.
When the New York Islanders became a team in 1972, their name seemed obvious.
But that didn't mean that "Islanders" was the first choice, as many thought it would be something else.
From 1959-1961, there was a minor league hockey team on Long Island called the Rovers. The Maven Stan Fischler shared in his "Maven Memories" story that they played out of Long Island Arena in Commack, New York, and served as the New York Rangers farm team before being bought by Al Baron, who changed the name to the Long Island Ducks.
So, when the Islanders were given a franchise, people thought the Ducks made a lot of sense for the name.
The Islanders made more sense.
"Long Island Arena hosted EHL hockey for a couple of years after the Islanders arrived," Fischler said. "By that time fans had shown they were ready for The Show. As the Isles moved toward their first playoff team in 1975, so were Coliseum seats filling up. In time, the Ducks became just a fond memory."
The Long Island Ducks, an independent baseball league, use the name because of the former hockey team. The NHL's Anaheim Ducks, originally called The Mighty Ducks, is based on the 1992 Disney film.
Did you know that in 1961, when the MLB awarded New York an expansion team and held a team-name contest, the Islanders and the Empire were options?
So, if the Mets had actually been named the Islanders in 1961, would the Islanders have been named the Ducks 11 years later or the Mets, or something completely different?
The Empire is actually the name of New York's World Team Tennis (WTT) club.
Soon enough, we will have our answer, as Utah hockey will happen regardless of the name this upcoming fall.

Dan Lanning Turns Heads With Another 5-Star Recruiting Video
Dan Lanning Turns Heads With Another 5-Star Recruiting Video originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is not opposed to going out of his way to participate in fun activities with recruits and make sure they're happy. We saw this earlier in the spring when the young coach ripped off his shirt and did a cannonball alongside 5-star EDGE Richard Wesley to announce his commitment, and now we're seeing it again with 5-star OT Immanuel Iheanacho. Advertisement While it wasn't a commitment announcement, Lanning is turning heads this weekend for his participation in a push-up contest with the 6-foot-6, 345-pounder. The two raced to see who could get to 25 push-ups first, and while Iheanacho apparently won, it was definitely close. Hopefully, this video will have a better long-term result for Lanning than the pool jump with Wesley did. Just 17 days after the commitment, Wesley decommitted from the Ducks and opened up his recruiting process once again, which led to Lanning getting some backlash among college football fans for his recruiting antics. Most notably, the USC Trojans poked fun at Lanning, posting Will Ferrell's cannonball scene from Anchorman to announce one of their commitments. Fortunately, it doesn't seem as if the Ducks are going to have to go the extra mile with Iheanacho to get his commitment. The 5-star, who is rated as the No. 8 player in the 2026 class, has said for a couple of months now that Oregon is leading his recruitment, and there are multiple predictions for him to commit to the Ducks. Advertisement Whether or not that commitment gets announced with Lanning partaking in the video is yet to be seen, but at this point, we know the Oregon coach will do what he needs to do to land the recruit. Oregon Football QB target Bryson Beaver named biggest stock-riser at Elite 11 Finals
The Oregon Ducks are working hard in the recruiting world when it comes to the quarterback position, pushing hard on a pair of prospects in the 2026 class: 5-star Ryder Lyons and 4-star Bryson Beaver. The former is a highly-touted prospect who the Ducks are going to have to try hard to win away from the BYU Cougars when he announces his commitment in a few days. However, Oregon got in early on the latter with an offer before his recruitment started to take off a couple of weeks ago, and it appears that it is paying off. Beaver participated in the Elite 11 Finals this past week down in Los Angeles and was named the No. 3 performer in what is being described as one of the best crops of QBs the camp has seen in quite some time. On top of that, On3 has now declared that Beaver is the biggest stock-riser from the bunch, with the distinction of "strongest arm" coming out of the camp. "Beaver looked like one of the more talented prospects on hand," On3's Charles Power writes. "We felt his arm took a backseat to nobody in attendance. The Southern California native has explosive arm power that effortlessly delivers from multiple slots and platforms. ... Currently a four-star prospect for On3, Beaver is primed to debut inside the inaugural Rivals300 ranking in July." It's been quite an eventful two weeks for Beaver in the recruiting world. Rated a three-star commit to the Boise State Broncos over a week ago, Beaver has since seen his rating rise to a four-star after being offered by the Ducks. He has taken a couple of visits to SEC schools after receiving offers from the Ole Miss Rebels and Alabama Crimson Tide. He is also in Eugene this weekend for an official visit, and is now predicted to land with the Ducks according to a new Crystal Ball prediction from 247Sports' Blair Angulo. The Ducks are also hosting 4-star QB Matt Ponatoski on a visit this weekend, with the expectation that they likely will be getting a commitment from one of them. At the moment, there is a belief that Ponatoski could get selected in the MLB draft as a top high school prospect this summer, which might lead to him never taking a snap in college football. That may lead to the Ducks prioritizing Beaver, who is among the fastest-rising QB prospects in the nation. Red Wings Could Be Circling Islanders' Noah Dobson in Trade Talks
New York Islanders exploring options for defenceman Noah Dobson with Detroit being a potential destination Image The Red Wings head into the offseason looking to upgrade several areas of their lineup, with help on the blueline high on their list as a deep pool of talent is available in this year's free agent market. Advertisement Luckily for Detroit, another big name looks like they will be joining the picture as Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman explained on his podcast 32 Thoughts that the New York Islanders are testing the market on restricted free agent Noah Dobson. The 25-year-old Summerside native has stood out in recent seasons, peaking with 10 goals and 60 assists for 70 points just a year ago. However, he experienced a significant drop this past season, posting only 39 points, his lowest total in four years. A change of scenery may be the right move for the former 12th overall pick back in 2018, and the Islanders could command a strong return in a trade. More NHL: Should Detroit Go All-In For Canucks' Brock Boeser? That said, time is a factor as if the team waits too long, rival clubs could present offer sheets for Dobson, potentially reducing the return to draft pick compensation based on the value of the contract offered. New York is currently testing the market for the young defenceman to see what more they can get besides draft picks and this could open the door for Detroit to make a move. Advertisement The Islanders were middle of the pack defensively last season but their offence looks to be the team's biggest problem as they finished bottom five in goals per game. The Red Wings have plenty of players that would be able to slide into a middle-six role for the Islanders as well as a very deep prospect pool and draft capital with four first-round picks over the next three seasons. A potential trade package featuring forward J.T. Compher, typically a 30-50 point producer, along with 24-year-old NHL-ready prospect Jonatan Berggren and additional draft picks, should be enough to land the Red Wings a defenceman for the future.
