Rumors swirl about possible serial killer after multiple human remains found along Connecticut shoreline: Police do not think so
CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — The sign says no trespassing on the gate, but it appears that is exactly what someone did at the end of Woodward Street in Danielson, where human remains were found Wednesday.
That disturbing discovery is not the only one in or near eastern Connecticut. Other remains were found in the City of Groton and just over the state line in Foster, Rhode Island.
Human remains found in Killingly, state police say
'It would seem that there's a pattern and that's scary,' said one woman who did not want to be identified.
State police told News 8 this in a statement:
'…there is no information at this time suggesting any connection to similar discoveries in RI & the CT shoreline area, and there is also no known threat to the public at this time.'
News 8 recently learned the remains found near a cemetery in the City of Groton on March 19 were in a suitcase. The other human remains found in Foster, Rhode Island March 27 were that of a woman.
'I would tell people don't rush to judgement,' Groton Police Chief Louis Fusaro said.
He said the same rumors are swirling around his investigation into a report of a suspicious man at Bluff Point State Park on April 3.
Here's a portion of the call reporting that incident to the Groton Police Department.
'I went back around. Turned the other way,' said the caller. 'He went back the other way and then he started like walking back as I turned around to walk back to the car.'
'What I heard on our phone call initially was remarkedly different from what we saw posted over the weekend last weekend,' Fusaro said.
In that Facebook post, the caller said the man pulled out a switchblade knife.
Groton police are also investigating the disappearance of Steven Gush, whose car and phone were found off of Route 184 on March 29.
Some wonder if this could all be the work of a serial killer. Police do not think so.
'What I can say is we don't believe there's any connection between them,' Fusaro said. 'But I've seen people draw conclusions. I've seen the stuff and it's causing a little bit of concern in our community.'

Suspect fatally shot by a security guard after Michigan church shooting, authorities say
DETROIT — One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting at a suburban Detroit church on June 22, authorities said. The City of Wayne Police Department said in a Facebook post that a shooting took place at CrossPointe Community Church at about 11 a.m. on June 22 and that responding officers determined that a security guard for the church shot and killed the suspect. "One victim was shot in the leg. Please avoid the area. Officers are still actively investigating," the post added. The police department described the suspect as a "31-year-old white male" in an email to USA TODAY. Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ reported that the suspect was on his way to the church when another person tried to stop him with their truck. When he opened fire on the truck, the security guard intervened, according to the station. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a post on X that the bureau has sent leadership and support teams to Wayne. US attack on Iran fallout: US warns of 'heightened threat environment' after strikes on Iran nukes Brendan Henzel, 21, said he was attending services at the church when the shooting occurred. He said the shooter shot the security guard in the knee before the guard killed him, and the guard was rushed to the hospital. "I was confused what was going on," Henzel said to the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, while he stood near the church in the hours after the shooting took place. "I heard 'Boom, boom, pow' and next thing I knew I was running." A livestream of the church service, which appears to have been taken down from the church's website but was captured by news outlets, shows parishioners, many of them children, sitting in the pews when the reported shooting takes place. Attendees are then seen ducking under their chairs or running away. A woman at one point yells: "Everybody to the back. Please, everybody, come to the back." The church was cordoned off with police tape Sunday afternoon, as police from various agencies investigated.

L.A. sheriff's officials apologize, delete tweet calling Iranians ‘victims' of ‘tragic' bombings
On the same day the U.S. military bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said on its social media channels their 'hearts go out' to Iranian 'victims.' The post sparked quick backlash — and a quick apology. It's unclear what time the initial message, which was on X, Facebook and Instagram, was posted Sunday. The department deleted the post from X and edited its Facebook and Instagram posts to remove the first two sentences. An apology issued Sunday evening referred to the original post as 'offensive and inappropriate.' According to a screenshot of the tweet from KTLA, the original post read, 'Our hearts go out to the victims and families impacted by the recent bombings in Iran. While this tragic event occurred overseas, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is closely monitoring the situation alongside our local, state, and federal partners.' The post also stated that, although there are no known threats to Los Angeles County, the department would be increasing patrol checks at places of worship and other sensitive locations throughout the county 'out of an abundance of caution.' The edited versions of the post on Instagram and Facebook exclude the first sentence of the original post and any mention of Iran, instead stating that the department is monitoring 'the situation overseas.' In its apology, the department said the post was made in error and did not reflect the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the department. 'As a law enforcement agency, we do not comment on foreign policy or military matters. Our mission remains solely focused on protecting public safety and serving our diverse communities,' the statement continued. The department has launched an internal review to determine how the posts were created and published, and it is taking steps to strengthen 'social media oversight protocols,' the statement said.
