The government on Thursday announced an award of Rs 10 crore to develop a drug for the treatment of sickle cell disease , which disproportionately affects India's tribal populations. Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect haemoglobin , causing red blood cells to become sickle-shaped and block the blood flow, which can lead to serious complications such as stroke, eye problems and infections.Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Eradication Mission on July 1, 2023, with the aim of eradicating the disease by 2047. The government aims to screen seven crore people up to 40 years of age as part of the mission. At an event to mark World Sickle Cell Day here, Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey announced the institution of the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Prize for the development of a drug to treat the disease. The minister said there is only one drug available as of now for the management of the disease. There is currently no option to select a drug from a range of alternatives based on the patient's body conditions and severity of the disease. He said this problem is worsened in special situations like pregnancy or the presence of other serious medical conditions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a new drug. The tribal affairs ministry, in collaboration with the AIIMS-Delhi, will undertake a competition for the development of the drug. The selected proposal will be funded up to Rs 10 crore, Uikey said.He also said the ministry will establish a Centre for Tribal Health and Research Institute under the AIIMS-Delhi.This centre will also have outpatient and inpatient facilities for providing the highest-quality medical care to tribal people. Provisions for seamless referrals from peripheral hospitals in tribal-dominated areas will be explored, he said. The centre will also guide the government in policy formulation. The minister said a postgraduate course in tribal medicine will also be designed. This will help address the long-standing health inequities faced by tribal communities, who often remain underserved due to geographical, socio-cultural and systemic barriers, he said. This specialised course will be designed to develop a cadre of medical professionals with contextual knowledge, clinical skills and public health competencies tailored to tribal settings.

Odisha planning to include yoga in school curriculum, health schemes: CM
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday said the state government is taking initiatives to include yoga in the school curriculum and public health programme as this helps create a healthy, self-reliant and efficient India. Addressing a state-level programme on the occasion of International Yoga Day at Kalinga Stadium here, he said yoga is not just a physical exercise but something that keeps the body, mind and soul active. The programme, organised by Odisha's Sports and Youth Affairs Department, was attended by over 10,000 people, including ministers, lawmakers, bureaucrats, students, women and others. In Odisha, we are making yoga available to everyone. We organise awareness campaigns on yoga in schools, colleges, hostels and sporting centres. We can also include yoga in school curriculum and public health programmes, the chief minister said. Majhi said that the awareness programmes on yoga teach people to maintain a healthy life. Though yoga has been practised in India for many years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ensured its international recognition after assuming charge as the PM in 2014, he said. Due to the PM's efforts, the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Yoga Day, he said. The chief minister said that yoga is "not just a physical exercise, but something that keeps body, mind and soul active". Yoga is a medium to attain physical, intellectual, mental and spiritual fulfilment. It is beneficial for human bodies," he said. The theme of this year's International Yoga Day is 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health', which highlights the deep connection between personal well-being and the health of the planet. "It shows how the ancient yoga practice nourishes not only the body and mind but also nature and promotes a harmonious lifestyle that respects all living beings," he said. On this occasion, the traditional Gotipu dance was performed by the culture department. Internationally acclaimed sand artist Padma Shri Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a sand sculpture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi performing Ustrasana (Camel Pose) on the Puri sea beach. By promoting yoga, India offered world path to holistic health: Yogi
Gorakhpur, June 21 (UNI) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said yoga is a timeless gift of Indian wisdom that has become a global symbol of well-being. Addressing yoga practitioners and trainers at Mahant Digvijaynath Memorial Hall on Gorakhnath Temple premises before joining them for yoga practice on the occasion of 11th International Yoga Day, the CM said that by promoting yoga as a tool for public welfare, India has offered the world a path to holistic health. He said that on the 11th International Yoga Day, nearly 190 countries are proudly embracing India's yoga tradition. "Yoga is a wonderful practice from India's sage tradition that keeps both the body and the mind healthy," he said. Yogi extended greetings to the people of the state on International Yoga Day, emphasising India's age-old reverence for yoga. Quoting the ancient saying 'Sharir madhyam khalu dharma sadhanam', the body is indeed the means to fulfill Dharma, he said that all four pursuits of human life, Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha, are rooted in physical well-being. He said, "A healthy body is essential not only for material success and personal fulfilment but also for spiritual advancement." He explained that yoga plays a vital role in keeping the body healthy so that one can pursue these goals. "India has always used yoga as a way to support public welfare and through this, it has also guided the world toward universal well-being." he said. The CM said, "Today we see many different aspects of yoga. India's rich tradition has introduced the world to higher states of awareness through yoga. From personality development to revealing the mysteries of the universe, this vast knowledge of yoga is preserved in our Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Smritis and other sacred texts." He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reviving and globalising India's ancient yoga tradition. "At a time when other countries were attempting to patent yoga postures, PM Modi took the historic step of securing global recognition for yoga through the United Nations. As a result of his efforts, International Yoga Day has been celebrated worldwide every year since June 21, 2015, with participation from 190 countries today," he said. Yogi said, "International Yoga Day is a way to honour our sage tradition and help future generations stay connected to this rich heritage,' he said. He also highlighted yoga's healing power, quoting the Sanskrit verse, 'Na tasya rogo na jara na mrityuh praptasya yogagrimayam shareeram', which means a body refined through yoga becomes free from illness, ageing and even death. Yogi expressed that it was his good fortune to participate in the International Yoga Day event on the sacred land of Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath. He said that he hoped the enthusiasm for yoga would lead to public welfare, social well-being, and the progress of the nation by ensuring healthy bodies and minds. Meanwhile, CM Yogi also watched and listened to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's live address at the Mahant Digvijaynath Smriti Bhawan in Gorakhnath Temple on the occasion. Afterwards, he practiced various yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation along with other yoga practitioners and trainees present at the hall. Yoga is an important and essential part of CM Yogi Adityanath's daily routine.

Chhattisgarh State Consumer Commission orders SBI Life to pay Rs 50 lakh to widow, rejects concealment claim
RAIPUR: The Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed SBI Life Insurance Company to pay Rs 50 lakh to Savitri Salam, whose husband's insurance claim was initially rejected. The Commission found that the insurer failed to conclusively prove concealment of pre-existing diseases by the deceased. Savitri Salam, a resident of Surdongar village in Keshkal tehsil, filed a complaint after her husband's health deteriorated, leading to his demise on 16 June 2021. She had sought a claim under a policy taken by her husband, but SBI Life Insurance rejected it, alleging that he had provided incorrect information about his pre-existing medical conditions and treatment in the proposal form. The insurance company argued before the District Consumer Commission that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease prior to taking the policy, and this was noted in his medical records from AIIMS, Raipur, as part of his medical history. Based on this, the claim was rejected due to misrepresentation of health information in the proposal form. The District Consumer Commission, Kanker, accepted Savitri Salam's complaint and directed the insurance company to pay the full claim amount within one month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo SBI Life Insurance then challenged this order before the Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. During the appeal hearing, the bench of Justice Gautam Chourdiya, President, and Pramod Kumar Varma, Member, determined that the claim was rejected solely based on a note in the AIIMS, Raipur, medical record. No other medical records were presented to conclusively prove that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease before applying for the policy, had undergone any prior treatment, or was on continuous medication. The Commission observed there was no evidence to suggest that the insured was aware of these conditions when he submitted the proposal. The State Commission concluded that it was not appropriate to claim the insured intentionally concealed important facts about his pre-existing diseases in the proposal. The appeal was rejected, and SBI Life Insurance Company has been directed to pay Rs 50 lakh from the life insurance claim, after deducting the Rs 56,621 premium amount already refunded to Savitri Salam by the insurance company. This amount will also include 7% annual simple interest from the date the complaint was filed (27 December 2023).
