DES MOINES, Iowa — Police said a K9 helped them capture a Des Moines man who led officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen truck Tuesday night.
Des Moines Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said the chase began around 10:39 p.m. when police tried to pull over a pickup truck for an equipment violation at SW 9th St. and Leach Ave. There was a short chase that ended at SE 4th St. and E. Phillip St., where the driver bailed and ran.
Sgt. Parizek said a K9 tracked the driver down, but he was non-compliant and was bitten on the arm by the K9. Zachary Rich, 35, suffered minor injuries. He was taken into custody and is being held in the Polk County Jail.

Rich is facing multiple charges, including first-degree theft, second-degree theft, eluding, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as traffic citations.
Court records show that at least one of the charges is connected to a May 10th chase involving a different stolen vehicle. Rich was able to elude the police at that time.

24-Year-Old Fugitive Captured In Denton Following Robbery, Firearm Charges

Police captured a robbery suspect after a manhunt in Denton earlier this week. Officers arrested 24-year-old Corey Momot for robbery on June 16, according to Amy Cunningham, public information liaison for the Denton Police Department. Momot fled from a traffic stop in northeast Denton, but officers captured him after a search. Momot faces charges of robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawfully discharging a firearm, and evading arrest with previous convictions, according to jail records. He is currently in the Denton County Jail. According to Cunningham, a Denton police officer recognized Momot near 2700 Emerson Lane on June 16. While the officer was waiting for backup, Momot left the scene, so police pulled him over on Old North Road near Mill Pond Road. 'Momot fled during the traffic stop, running toward Emerson Lane before jumping several fences toward Cooper Creek,' Cunningham said. 'Officers set up a perimeter and requested K9 assistance from local agencies.' During the manhunt, Denton police told the public to 'avoid the area.' Nearby residents used the Ring app to warn neighbors to lock their doors as police were 'looking for a suspect that fled.' A K9 unit with the Cooke County Sheriff's Office ultimately found Momot, 'who had concealed himself in brush and dirt near Cooper Creek,' according to Cunningham. Momot was wanted by the Corinth Police Department on a robbery warrant, according to Cunningham, and jail records show he allegedly committed the offense on June 7. Cunningham also said Momot was the suspect in an incident where 'a gunshot was fired at an apartment complex pool' on June 12, though no injuries or damage were reported. After arresting him on the robbery warrant, Denton police added charges for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful discharge of a firearm, Cunningham said. Jail records show Momot's robbery charge carries a $20,000 bond, and the rest of the charges each carry a $5,000 bond. Momot has a long criminal history in Denton County going back to 2018, according to jail records. Denton County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Momot in June 2020 for charges including assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, burglary of a motor vehicle, and more, according to jail records. He was released on July 3 of that year after posting a bond. Deputies also arrested him in February 2021 for charges including a 'terroristic threat,' possession of drug paraphernalia, and more. He was released on May 11 that year. Texas Department of Public Safety troopers arrested Momot in October 2021 for charges including violating bond and 'bail jumping.' He was released on November 22, 2022. Momot has been arrested various other times in the past.

APD releases video, details in police shooting that killed man and K-9

Jun. 16—Wrestled to the ground by a police dog, a man threw his arm around the K-9 to point a gun at three approaching police officers, a newly released Albuquerque Police Department lapel video shows. Seconds later, both the man and dog would be mortally wounded by police gunfire. Though the man's gun was loaded, Police Chief Harold Medina said it was never fired. Officers had tracked Jorge Dominguez, 39, to the Comfort Suites early in the morning on May 29, after he evaded a SWAT standoff in an East Central neighborhood two days prior, according to court records. Officers were attempting to arrest Dominguez on two warrants when he was killed, one was from a DWI arrest in February and another for auto theft and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer from the previous standoff. Dominguez, whose body had 10 gunshot wounds from police bullets, was pronounced dead on the scene, said Cmdr. Kyle Hartsock, who oversees APD's Criminal Investigations Bureau, at a news briefing about the shooting Monday. Officer Christopher Brito, the K-9's handler, and officer Joshua Lerma collectively fired 17 shots at Dominguez; 10 hit Dominguez, Hartsock said. At least one bullet struck the police dog in the face, according to spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos. It's unclear which officer's bullets killed the K-9, Rebel, Police Chief Harold Medina said. Two less-lethal foam rounds were also fired at Dominguez by a third officer, Hartsock said. After locating his room at the hotel, an APD crisis negotiator called Dominguez on the phone and attempted to persuade him to turn himself in. Dominguez hung up, Hartsock said. Moments later hotel security footage shows Dominguez darting out of and back into his hotel room. Less than a minute later, outside the hotel, a window screen fell from above, followed by a man, security footage shows. Dominguez jumped 16 feet from his hotel room window, into a 5-foot wide alley where he was pursued by Rebel and officers, Hartsock said. "Show us your hands," an officer yelled in a lapel video as they approached. "You're gonna get shot, you're gonna get shot, dude." Rebel knocked Dominguez onto his back and latched on, security camera footage shows. Medina said Dominguez then used the K-9 "as a shield" and pointed his gun at officers. After noticing the gun in Dominguez's hand, officers opened fire, Hartsock said. Officers were within several feet of Dominguez when the first shots were fired, lapel camera footage shows. Lerma fired several shots while standing over Dominguez, Brito's lapel footage shows. Brito pulled Rebel off of Dominguez and took him aside, the dog's blood splashed on the pavement, lapel footage shows. The K-9 was rushed to a veterinary hospital where he was euthanized due to the severity of his injury, Hartsock said. This was sixth police shooting this year, five of which have been fatal. The latest police shooting of an alleged armed robber on Sunday left the man hospitalized and marked the seventh shooting of the year. "I feel like a broken record when I stand up in front of these (briefings) especially with officer-involved shootings and yesterday, again, was another prime example," Medina said. "Until we as a community and state can keep individuals in custody who are a danger to themselves and others for the appropriate amount of time, we're going to keep seeing these incidents. It's alarming."
