JLR trims margin forecast on US tariff concerns

British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover lowered its fiscal 2026 earnings before interest and taxes margins forecast to 5%-7% on Monday from 10% earlier, amid uncertainty in the global car industry as US tariffs loom. Shares in the company's Indian parent Tata Motors slumped as much as 5.2% in early trade after the announcement. The revised EBIT margin forecast is also below JLR's reported 8.5% margin for the previous fiscal year ended March 31. JLR added it sees free cash flow of close to zero in fiscal 2026. The company, which derives more than a quarter of its sales from the US, had temporarily paused shipments to the country after President Donald Trump slapped a 25% duty on all foreign-made vehicles sold in the world's second-largest car market. The 'Defender' sport utility vehicle maker said it is reallocating available units to 'accessible markets', to boost profits. It added that it continues to engage with both the US and UK governments regarding a trade deal signed in May, which allows the UK to export 100,000 cars a year to the US at a 10% tariff, below the 25% levy for other nations. While JLR's 'Range Rover' SUV line-up is manufactured in the UK, the popular 'Defender' is made in Slovakia, a member of the EU, which does not yet have a trade pact with the Trump administration. The carmaker said it is assessing pricing actions in the US to help offset the tariff impact. Analysts have said JLR may be less affected by the increased costs associated with the tariffs, thanks to a wealthier customer base that is unlikely to be deterred by a bigger price tag. However, Tata Motors remains among the most exposed Indian carmakers to the US duties, as JLR lacks local manufacturing in the country, unlike most of its rivals, including German brands Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

JLR takes next steps in electrification by strengthening supply chain

Tata Motors-owned JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) is moving forward with its electrification strategy for 2030, but to ensure its operations remain ethical and reliable, it has hired 50 supply chain specialists. Looking for a new or used set of wheels? Find it here with CARmag! Automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced that it will be bolstering its transition to electric mobility by hiring 50 new specialists dedicated to strengthening the resilience and ethical standards of its global supply chains. This move comes as the British carmaker forges forward to deliver fully electric models across all its brands by 2030, amid an era of heightened geopolitical tension and complex material sourcing challenges. Related: Alfa Romeo Is Going Racing, but With a Sailing Boat The newly appointed team has been tasked with building deep visibility into JLR's parts and materials pipeline. This will include ethical sourcing of raw minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite, which are crucial for EV battery production. Their role is to identify potential threats before they disrupt production and ensure ethical, uninterrupted sourcing of critical components. Related: BYD Scales Into Delivery Fleet With Groundbreaking Local Courier Company A very frequent criticism of battery-operated vehicles is their environmentally damaging impact and unethical labour standards. Therefore, JLR states that this recruitment push complements its existing work with third-party partners that conduct physical audits on supply sources, including mine sites, to uphold traceability and ethical standards. The automaker is also investing in advanced digital tools like AI, machine learning, and real-time analytics to gain clearer insight into its increasingly complex global logistics network. JLR adds that long and tangled supply chains have proven fragile in recent years, fractured by the pandemic, shipping delays, and international conflicts. Ama Agyewaa Sappor, another new addition to the team, brings 15 years of supply chain experience and a strong belief in responsible sourcing. 'I chose to commit my skills to JLR because of its commitment to people and planet; not just profits,' she said. 'Having grown up in Africa, I am passionate about our upstream impact, including ethical sourcing and sustainable end-to-end supply chain operations.' Forming part of a bold rebranding strategy, uptake for the new Type 00 from Jaguar has been controversial to say the least, and time will tell if the conglomerate will proceed exactly according to its roadmap. However, behind the scenes, JLR has confirmed that it has trained over 20 000 employees in specialist supply chain disciplines, including modern slavery prevention and export control for this electrified future.
