Automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced that it will be bolstering its transition to electric mobility by hiring 50 new specialists dedicated to strengthening the resilience and ethical standards of its global supply chains. This move comes as the British carmaker forges forward to deliver fully electric models across all its brands by 2030, amid an era of heightened geopolitical tension and complex material sourcing challenges.

The newly appointed team has been tasked with building deep visibility into JLR's parts and materials pipeline. This will include ethical sourcing of raw minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite, which are crucial for EV battery production. Their role is to identify potential threats before they disrupt production and ensure ethical, uninterrupted sourcing of critical components.

A very frequent criticism of battery-operated vehicles is their environmentally damaging impact and unethical labour standards. Therefore, JLR states that this recruitment push complements its existing work with third-party partners that conduct physical audits on supply sources, including mine sites, to uphold traceability and ethical standards. The automaker is also investing in advanced digital tools like AI, machine learning, and real-time analytics to gain clearer insight into its increasingly complex global logistics network. JLR adds that long and tangled supply chains have proven fragile in recent years, fractured by the pandemic, shipping delays, and international conflicts.
Ama Agyewaa Sappor, another new addition to the team, brings 15 years of supply chain experience and a strong belief in responsible sourcing. 'I chose to commit my skills to JLR because of its commitment to people and planet; not just profits,' she said. 'Having grown up in Africa, I am passionate about our upstream impact, including ethical sourcing and sustainable end-to-end supply chain operations.'
Forming part of a bold rebranding strategy, uptake for the new Type 00 from Jaguar has been controversial to say the least, and time will tell if the conglomerate will proceed exactly according to its roadmap. However, behind the scenes, JLR has confirmed that it has trained over 20 000 employees in specialist supply chain disciplines, including modern slavery prevention and export control for this electrified future.

Next Stay Close ✕ There's not a lot of rugby on Saturday and Sunday, as the Springboks' international season only kicks off next Saturday with a clash against the Barbarians in Cape Town. Rassie Erasmus' men will then play a two-Test series against Italy before concluding the winter window with a match against Georgia. The only Test match this weekend is the British and Irish Lions' match against Argentina on Friday night (9pm). That match is essentially a warm-up for their tour Down Under, which starts next Saturday with a game against the Western Force. The Super Rugby final between the Crusaders and the Chiefs could be a good watch to see how New Zealand rugby is going ahead of their Test series against France and Rugby Championship, which will see them host the Springboks in Auckland and Wellington later this year. After last week's gripping World Test Championship final, the Proteas men will enjoy a two-week break before getting back into action in a two-Test series against Zimbabwe away. England vs India should make for some good viewing for lovers of Test cricket, but it's not going to conjure up the same emotions we experienced last weekend. However, the Proteas Women are in action on Friday night and Sunday afternoon in the shortest format after they beat the Windies in the ODI series. The team will be involved in the Women's ODI World Cup in October and will definitely be worth the watch to see the next generation of Proteas greats. Sundowns' match against German giants Borussia Dortmund is probably the highlight of the weekend. It will be a fascinating watch to see how the Betway Premiership giants go against one of the best club sides in the world.

Volvo's Electric EX30 Cross Country confirmed for SA
Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that the EX30 Cross Country will arrive locally in the third quarter of 2025. Built on the standard model, this will serve as a tougher, more rugged counterpart. Volvo has given the EX30 a raised ride height (19mm higher than the standard EX30), chunkier body cladding, and 19-inch five-spoke wheels finished in Matte Graphite with black aero inserts. Other design tweaks help the Cross Country stand out from the standard EX30. The front shield and boot lid wear a darker finish, and model-specific artwork on the front end takes inspiration from Sweden's Kebnekaise mountain range. Skid plates and wheel arch extensions complete the rugged aesthetic. South African buyers will get the Cross Country in the Ultra Twin Performance trim only. That means a fully loaded cabin with a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, and a long list of safety and driver assistance features over 15 in total, including Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera. Volvo will also offer accessories like mudflaps, a roof basket, and a load carrier for added versatility. The 69kWh battery pack offers a claimed WLTP range of 427km. Fast-charging capability means a 10 to 80% top-up takes just 26 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger. 'The EX30 Cross Country builds on everything people love about the EX30, adding rugged capability and distinctive design details,' said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's head of marketing and communications. 'It's a refined, all-electric SUV that feels equally at home on gravel roads or in the city, offering South Africans a practical way to go further with confidence.' The arrival of the EX30 Cross Country highlights Volvo's ongoing shift to electrification, with the brand aiming for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up nearly all global sales by 2030. Gupta-linked Saxonwold mansions head to auction after seven-year legal battle
Three properties in business rescue will go under the hammer on 24 July. After seven years of drawn-out litigation, three luxurious Saxonwold properties tied to Gupta-owned Confident Concept (Pty) Ltd are set to be auctioned. The properties – including the family's former Johannesburg residence – are being sold by Park Village Auctions following a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling, marking what auctioneer Clive Lazarus calls 'the beginning of the end' of a long-running legal and business rescue saga. ALSO READ: 'Gupta Saxonwold compound' has its lights cut Creditors can breathe a sigh of relief The simulcast auction will take place on 24 July at 11am, with the sale expected to bring long-awaited relief to creditors. Confident Concept held a substantial property portfolio including land adjacent to the infamous Saxonwold compound in Johannesburg. The company became embroiled in litigation with the City of Johannesburg, allegedly owing R726 695 in rates and taxes as of 2022. It has faced two major areas of legal contention: business rescue proceedings due to financial distress, and disputes with municipal authorities over property development. The business rescue process, which began in 2018, ran alongside the municipal disputes and involved other Gupta-linked companies. Opulent and decadent The first property to be sold will be number 5 Saxonwold Drive, measuring 4 207 m², which is a three-storey residence featuring eight bedrooms, extensive living and entertainment areas, an indoor swimming pool, expansive rooftop patio, staff accommodation, and ample garaging. Second on the list is number 7 Saxonwold Drive which also comprises three storeys with 17 en suite bedrooms. The property also features a grand triple-volume foyer with an atrium-like domed skylight, multiple lounges, a cinema lounge, beauty salon, and staff accommodation. The final property to be sold is number 3 Saxonwold Drive which is a single-storey, three-bedroom home with a single garage, storeroom and staff accommodation. The entire contents of each house, namely furniture and appliances, will be sold as a single lot (not individual items) following each respective property. Lazarus says he is humbled by Park Villages Auctions being entrusted to dispose of assets of such political significance once again, recouping millions for the corruption-afflicted creditors.
