BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – There's a special opportunity to check out the incredible transformation of the Kilmer Mansion while sampling the culinary creations of some creative cooks.
The Junior League of Binghamton is hosting a Chef Show Down as part of its Designer Show House at the historic mansion Thursday evening.
The Junior League has completely refurbished the Kilmer with the help of local designers and contractors.
Thursday evening, chefs from local eateries will face off in a competition to see who can create the best dish.
The hook is that they must use an ingredient that might typically be found in a food pantry.
That's because some proceeds from the Show House and affiliated events will go to create a Food Recovery and Prepared Meal Truck.
The truck will collect leftover food from local restaurants and caterers for a chef to repurpose into hot meals that are then driven to food deserts in Broome and Tioga Counties for distribution to people in need.
Junior League President Alisha Swietzer says our area has a good network of food pantries, but not everyone can easily get to them.
'Folks in our area have trouble accessing those. Either mobility challenges or they lack the means of a vehicle to get to them. So, we thought, 'Okay, we need to do something here, we need to combine the efforts.' So, we're going to take the food directly to them,' said Swietzer.
Swietzer says the Junior League has set a goal of raising $360,000 to purchase the truck and pay for two years of operation. Once completed, it will turn the truck over to CHOW to operate.
Thursday's Chef Show Down begins at 6 p.m. and features Little Venice, Donoli's, Kitchen Counter, Confection Connection, and Quebec Diner 87.
There will be two prizes: a people's choice determined by $1 votes, and a judge's choice.
I am honored to be a member of the judging panel.
Tickets are $49 and can be purchased at JuniorLeagueBinghamton.org or at the door.

'Point Break,' 'Timecop,' John Woo movies coming to digital 4K

Studios announced the digital 4K releases of Point Break, Timecop and several Hong Kong films on Wednesday. The two Hollywood films are available Friday for rent or purchase in 4K for the first time. The A Better Tomorrow trilogy premieres digitally on July 8. John Woo directed the first two and Tsui Hark the third, all starring Chow Yun-fat. Woo and Chow's The Killer and Tsui's Peking Opera Blues become available July 22. Shout! released physical 4K UHDs of Point Break and Timecop. Point Break stars Patrick Swayze as an FBI agent who goes undercover with surfers led by Patrick Swayze to catch a gang of bank robbers. Timecop stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as a time-traveling policeman. Shout! made a deal to distribute the Golden Princess library under its Hong Kong Classics banner. A collection of Jet Li films and City on Fire, also starring Chow, are planned for 4K UHD. A Better Tomorrow launched Woo's signature action style with slow motion moves and gangsters shooting two guns at once. Those, along with The Killer, made Chow a leading Hong Kong action star. They would also reteam for Hard Boiled and Once a Thief. Woo directed a remake of The Killer starring Nathalie Emmanuelle and Omar Sy last year. Tsui also directed and produced the Once Upon a Time in China films and produced Chinese Ghost Story and Iron Monkey films. Peking Opera Blues is an action comedy starring Brigitte Lin, Sally Yeh and Cherie Chung. Shout! plans to release the Chinese Ghost Story trilogy August 5 and Woo's A Bullet in the Head in 4K on Aug 19.

SRO Productions presents ‘A New Brain'

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A semi-autobiographical musical that explores the healing powers of art and music is coming to the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage on Friday. SRO Productions is ending its season with William Finn's 'A New Brain.' The musical addresses Finn's personal experience with a life-threatening brain tumor and his subsequent recovery. Based loosely on Finn's own life, the story follows Gordon Michael Schwinn, a frustrated composer for a children's TV show, as he is diagnosed with a severe brain condition. The show discusses themes of mortality and fear while celebrating life, love, and friendship. Director Douglas Harrington emphasizes the importance of taking care of your mind and body. He encourages audience members not to compare their journey to someone else's. 'One of the biggest takeaways from the show, that I hope people take away, is that where you are in life is the right place to be right now. Each person has a different path,' said Harrington. A New Brain will have a two-weekend run. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets start at $23.
