Inside the Numbers: Pacers, Thunder Set to Play Game 7 for NBA Title on Sunday Night
For the 20th time, there will be a Game 7 in the NBA Finals. Indiana will play at Oklahoma City on Sunday night in the final game of the season, with the winner getting the Larry O'Brien Trophy. Home teams are 15–4 in Game 7 of the finals, but a road team – Cleveland over Golden State – won the most recent of those games in 2016.
A look inside some numbers surrounding this matchup: Odds are nobody's scoring 40. There have been only two 40-point scoring performances in Game 7 of the NBA Finals – and both came in losing efforts. Jerry West scored 42 points in Game 7 of the 1969 series, but the Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Boston Celtics in Bill Russell's final game. And Elgin Baylor scored 41 points in Game 7 in 1962 – another Lakers-Celtics matchup – but Boston prevailed in that one as well. Bob Pettit had the third-highest scoring total in a Game 7. He had 39 for the St. Louis Hawks against the Celtics in 1957… and Boston won that game as well. The highest-scoring Game 7s in a winning effort? Those would be by Boston's Tom Heinsohn in that 1957 game against St. Louis and Miami's LeBron James in the 2013 series against San Antonio. Both had 37. Heinsohn's was a double-overtime game; James got his in regulation.
And no team might break 100 either. Yes, these are high-scoring teams. Oklahoma City was No. 4 in points per game in the regular season (120.5 per game), and Indiana was No. 7 (117.4). The Thunder are second in that category in the playoffs (115.2), just ahead of No. 3 Indiana (115.1). In Game 7, that might not matter much. No team has reached 100 points in Game 7 of the NBA Finals since 1988. Or even topped 95 points, for that matter. The last five Game 7s:

– 2013: Miami 95, San Antonio 88
– 2010: Los Angeles Lakers 83, Boston 79
– 2005: San Antonio 81, Detroit 74

The last finals Game 7 to see someone hit the century mark was when the Lakers beat the Pistons 108–105 in 1988. Expect a close one. The average margin of victory in Game 7 of an NBA Finals: 6.9 points. Each of the last eight such games have been decided by single digits. Only four have been double-digit wins: Boston over St. Louis by 19 in 1960, Minneapolis over New York by 17 in 1952, Boston over Milwaukee by 15 in 1974, and New York over the Los Angeles Lakers by 14 in 1970. The closest Game 7 in the finals was Syracuse beating Fort Wayne 92–91 in 1955. That was one of six finals Game 7s decided by three points or less.
By seed: The Thunder are the 22nd No. 1 seed to play in Game 7 of an NBA Finals. Their 21 predecessors on that list are 12–9 in the ultimate game; seven of those games have been ones where both teams entered the playoffs as No. 1 seeds. The Pacers are the fourth No. 4 seed to make Game 7 of the title round. Their three predecessors went 1–2 (Boston beat the Lakers in 1969, Seattle lost to Washington in 1978, and the Celtics lost to the Lakers in 2010).
Game 7 experience: It'll be the fourth Game 7 for Indiana forwards Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner. Siakam's teams have gone 2–1 in Game 7s; Turner's have gone 1–2. Indiana's Aaron Nesmith is 2–0 in the pair of Game 7s in which he has played, with Indiana winning at New York last year and Boston beating Milwaukee in 2022. Both of those wins were in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the league's reigning MVP, has averaged 27 points in two previous Game 7s. Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton scored 26 points in his lone Game 7 to this point. No player on either side has previously been part of a Game 7 in the NBA Finals.
New for some refs, too. The NBA doesn't announce referee assignments until game day, so it won't be known until Sunday morning who the three-person crew is for Game 7. This much is certain: for at least two of the referees, it'll be the first time on the Game 7 finals stage. Scott Foster – who would seem a likely pick this year – worked Game 7 of the finals in 2013 alongside Dan Crawford and Monty McCutchen, and Game 7 of the title series in 2010 with Dan Crawford and Joe Crawford. The most recent Game 7 of the finals was in 2016, and the crew for that game was Dan Crawford, McCutchen, and Mike Callahan. Outside of Foster, no referee in this year's pool has been on the floor for a Game 7 in the NBA Finals.

Rangers first baseman Jake Burger left the game in the seventh inning with left-side tightness. Center fielder Wyatt Langford sat out because of back spasms. Key moment: The Pirates closed to 3–2 with two runs in the fourth inning, but deGrom caught Alexander Canario looking with the bases loaded to end the threat. Key stat: DeGrom made his 15th start, his most in a season since also starting 15 times for the New York Mets in 2021.

Dodgers' Roki Sasaki Resumes His Throwing Program in Recovery From Shoulder Injury
Dodgers right-hander Roki Sasaki has restarted his throwing program as he continues his recovery from a right shoulder injury. Manager Dave Roberts said the 23-year-old phenom threw from 60 to 90 feet Friday in his return to workouts after a brief pause. 'That was a bonus,' Roberts said. 'That was a plus. Chatted with him briefly afterward. He was excited about it.' The Dodgers had halted Sasaki's throwing program for the previous several days because he didn't feel comfortable throwing at full intensity. Roberts confirmed that Sasaki has remained pain-free but must build up his arm to game strength in a process that will take at least a few more weeks. Sasaki went on the injured list May 13 with right shoulder impingement, and the Dodgers transferred him to the 60-day injured list earlier Friday to make room on their roster for their latest trade acquisition, left-hander Zach Penrod. Roberts said Sasaki's move to the 60-day list was 'procedural (and) the progression it doesn't affect that at all.' Sasaki began his first stateside season in the Dodgers rotation going 1–1 with a 4.72 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP in eight starts while adjusting to his move from Japan to MLB. The Dodgers shut down Sasaki after he developed pain in his shoulder, but the two-time Nippon Professional Baseball All-Star began throwing again earlier this month. The Dodgers currently have a mere 13 pitchers on the injured list after having as many as 15 injured hurlers in recent weeks – and Sasaki isn't the only key starter making progress in his recovery. Tyler Glasnow will throw two innings Sunday for Triple-A Oklahoma City in his first rehab assignment, Roberts said. The $136.5 million right-hander has been on the injured list since April 28 with right shoulder inflammation. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell will throw a bullpen session soon at Dodger Stadium, Roberts said. The left-hander made only two starts to begin the first season of his $182 million deal before going on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation. Shohei Ohtani threw a bullpen session on schedule Friday despite getting hit by a pitch in his pitching shoulder in the ninth inning of the Dodgers' contentious 5–3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. Ohtani is still scheduled to make his second mound start for the Dodgers on Sunday.

Padres closer Suarez suspended 3 games, fined for hitting Ohtani with pitch; managers banned 1 game
San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount Friday for intentionally hitting Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a pitch during the NL West rivals' contentious meeting Thursday night. Suarez will appeal the suspension, keeping him eligible to play for San Diego on Friday night against Kansas City. Padres manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also received one-game suspensions and undisclosed fines for their roles in the brouhaha that occurred in both halves of the ninth inning during the Padres' 5–3 victory at Dodger Stadium. 'I support it,' Roberts said about the league's disciplinary decision. 'I think that obviously I never want to make the game about the managers. It shouldn't be. It should be about the players and winning, so last night both managers are protecting their teams and it just unfortunately got to the point that we became the focus, and that's not the way it should be.' Both managers were ejected in the top of the ninth after they ran onto the field and bumped into each other during a vociferous argument that almost got even more physical before their players and assistant coaches intervened. Shildt believed Dodgers reliever Jack Little intentionally hit Fernando Tatís Jr. in the right hand with a pitch, igniting the latest bench-clearing incident between local rivals with several years of bad-tempered history. 'Circumstances were really challenging this past series, and at the end of the day I don't regret standing up for a guy that I love in Tati and a team that I love and a city that I love,' Shildt said. 'In that regard I have no regrets how it got to that point. Again we can all have our comments and thoughts and theories. But as far as my actions, it's not something you want to do every night or needs to be done hopefully ever again. But appropriate actions for the circumstances were taken, and I don't regret it at all.' Shildt and Roberts will serve their suspensions Friday. Bench coach Danny Lehmann will manage the Dodgers against the Washington Nationals, and Padres bench coach Brian Esposito will run San Diego's dugout. In the bottom of the ninth, Ohtani was hit on the back of his right shoulder by Suarez's pitch, putting the tying run on base during the Dodgers' three-run rally. Ohtani's teammates appeared to be preparing to storm the field for the second time before Ohtani waved them back. The three-time MVP then walked to the Padres dugout for some light banter, defusing the tension. Suarez on Friday insisted he hadn't retaliated for Tatís. 'I was never trying to get anyone into trouble or hit anybody,' Suarez said through an interpreter. 'Unfortunately it happened. I got ejected and I couldn't finish out the game, but we won as a team and we were able to salvage that game. … (The Dodgers are) entitled to their opinion. They can say whatever they want. That was not the case. I was out there to try to save the game.' Ohtani threw a bullpen session as scheduled Friday despite getting hit by Suarez on his pitching shoulder. 'Ohtani's second mound start for the Dodgers is still expected to happen Sunday,' Roberts said. Tatís was in the Padres lineup as usual Friday. Manny Machado said afterward that the Dodgers should pray Tatís had escaped serious injury, encouraging them to 'put out a candle.'
