Padres closer Suarez suspended 3 games, fined for hitting Ohtani with pitch; managers banned 1 game

San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez was suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount Friday for intentionally hitting Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a pitch during the NL West rivals' contentious meeting Thursday night. Suarez will appeal the suspension, keeping him eligible to play for San Diego on Friday night against Kansas City.
Padres manager Mike Shildt and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also received one-game suspensions and undisclosed fines for their roles in the brouhaha that occurred in both halves of the ninth inning during the Padres' 5–3 victory at Dodger Stadium. 'I support it,' Roberts said about the league's disciplinary decision. 'I think that obviously I never want to make the game about the managers. It shouldn't be. It should be about the players and winning, so last night both managers are protecting their teams and it just unfortunately got to the point that we became the focus, and that's not the way it should be.'
Both managers were ejected in the top of the ninth after they ran onto the field and bumped into each other during a vociferous argument that almost got even more physical before their players and assistant coaches intervened. Shildt believed Dodgers reliever Jack Little intentionally hit Fernando Tatís Jr. in the right hand with a pitch, igniting the latest bench-clearing incident between local rivals with several years of bad-tempered history. 'Circumstances were really challenging this past series, and at the end of the day I don't regret standing up for a guy that I love in Tati and a team that I love and a city that I love,' Shildt said. 'In that regard I have no regrets how it got to that point. Again we can all have our comments and thoughts and theories. But as far as my actions, it's not something you want to do every night or needs to be done hopefully ever again. But appropriate actions for the circumstances were taken, and I don't regret it at all.'
Shildt and Roberts will serve their suspensions Friday. Bench coach Danny Lehmann will manage the Dodgers against the Washington Nationals, and Padres bench coach Brian Esposito will run San Diego's dugout.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ohtani was hit on the back of his right shoulder by Suarez's pitch, putting the tying run on base during the Dodgers' three-run rally. Ohtani's teammates appeared to be preparing to storm the field for the second time before Ohtani waved them back. The three-time MVP then walked to the Padres dugout for some light banter, defusing the tension.
Suarez on Friday insisted he hadn't retaliated for Tatís. 'I was never trying to get anyone into trouble or hit anybody,' Suarez said through an interpreter. 'Unfortunately it happened. I got ejected and I couldn't finish out the game, but we won as a team and we were able to salvage that game. … (The Dodgers are) entitled to their opinion. They can say whatever they want. That was not the case. I was out there to try to save the game.'
Ohtani threw a bullpen session as scheduled Friday despite getting hit by Suarez on his pitching shoulder. 'Ohtani's second mound start for the Dodgers is still expected to happen Sunday,' Roberts said.
Tatís was in the Padres lineup as usual Friday. Manny Machado said afterward that the Dodgers should pray Tatís had escaped serious injury, encouraging them to 'put out a candle.'

Orioles scratch catcher Adley Rutschman against Yankees because of left abdominal tightness

Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman was scratched shortly before Friday's game against the New York Yankees because of left abdominal tightness. Rutschman was slated to serve as the designated hitter and bat second before getting removed from the lineup about 20 minutes before the opener of a three-game series. After feeling pain during batting practice, trainer Scott Barringer recommended Rutschman should be scratched. 'During (batting practice) it flared up,' interim manager Tony Mansolino said after Baltimore's 5–3 win. 'A smart trainer, a smart guy, been around this a long time. Pulled the plug right away just to make sure and then we'll get it checked out. We'll have more information tomorrow.' Jackson Holliday replaced Rutschman as the DH and batted leadoff. Jordan Westburg moved from the leadoff spot to second in Baltimore's revised lineup. Rutschman is hitting .277 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 68 games this season. The top overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft is hitting .309 (17 for 55) in his last 15 games after hitting .182 (16 for 88) in his previous 25.

Rays Cruise Past Tigers 14-8 as Díaz Hits 2 Homers and Thaiss Drives in 4 Runs

Yandy Díaz was 3 for 5 with two home runs. Matt Thaiss drove in four runs, and every Rays starter had at least one hit in Tampa Bay's 14–8 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. The 14 runs given up was a season high for Detroit, which entered with the best record in the majors. Díaz hit his 19th career leadoff home run, launching a 3–2 fastball over the right-center fence. In the fifth, his solo shot extended the Rays' lead to 9–3 and gave him multiple home runs in a game for the first time since May 11, 2019. Curtis Mead was 2 for 2 with three walks, three runs, and an RBI. Díaz, Taylor Walls, and Kameron Misner each drove in two for Tampa Bay, which is 1 1/2 games behind the first-place Yankees in the American League East. Rays starter Shane Baz (7–3) won his fourth consecutive decision, striking out six and giving up four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Tigers left fielder Riley Greene was 3 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs. It was his sixth multihomer game and third this season. He now has 29 RBIs over his last 29 games, dating to May 20. Colt Keith also homered for Detroit, which has lost four of its last six. Key moment: Tampa Bay chased Tigers starter Jack Flaherty (5–8) in the bottom of the third after a bases-loaded double by Walls. Flaherty has surrendered 15 combined runs over his past two starts, raising his season ERA from 3.41 to 4.83. Key stat: The Rays scored four runs in the bottom of the first, their most in the opening frame since they had four in a 5–4 home win over the Angels on April 9.

Ramírez Hits 3-Run Homer to Leads Marlins to 6-2 Win Over Braves

Agustín Ramírez hit a three-run home run, Janson Junk pitched five effective innings, and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 6–2 on Friday night. Ramírez made it 4–1 in the third with a drive off Braves starter Didier Fuentes (0–1) that went 436 feet to left, giving the rookie catcher a team-leading 11 home runs on the season. Junk (2–0) allowed five hits, one run, and struck out five in his first Marlins start. Junk, who has made five relief appearances, did not issue a walk. Eric Wagaman boosted Miami's lead with a pinch-hit ground-rule double in the sixth, and Ramírez drove in another run in the seventh. Fuentes, called up earlier Friday from Triple-A Gwinnett, debuted as the youngest active player in the majors and the youngest Braves starter since 1969. He turned 20 years old on June 17. The right-hander allowed six hits and four runs while striking out three over five innings. Marlins reliever Robinson Piña also made his MLB debut when he replaced Tyler Phillips in the eighth and gave up a solo shot to Austin Riley that made it 6–2. Ronald Acuña Jr. went 2 for 4 to extend his hitting streak at Miami's loanDepot park to nine games dating back to October 2022. He also stole his second base. Key moment: Dane Myers robbed Marcell Ozuna of a homer in the fifth without fully making a catch. The Marlins center fielder jumped over the wall to bring a deep flyball back into the field of play, turning a would-be solo shot into a 406-foot double. The Braves stranded Ozuna at second. Key stat: Matt Olson extended his MLB-leading on-base streak to 21 consecutive games with his RBI single in the fourth. Up next: RHP Grant Holmes (3–6, 3.97) will start the second game of the series for the Braves against Marlins RHP Eury Pérez (0–1, 6.43).
