India's trade may get hit if West Asia conflict escalates

New Delhi: India's trade may get impacted if the tensions in West Asia escalate and the government is keeping an eye on insurance rates and freight costs amid the uncertainties, an official said Monday, a day after Iran's Parliament approved a measure to close the Strait of Hormuz , the strategic global oil choke point which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. The Strait carries nearly 25% of global oil shipments , nearly two-thirds of India's crude oil and half of its LNG imports and remains open for now. 'The Strait of Hormuz is open for trade for now but trade may get impacted if situation escalates. The part till Jabel Ali Free Zone in the UAE is not facing challenges as of now. Freight rates haven't increased yet for exporters. We are keeping an eye on insurance costs,' the official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ödeme? Exporters said that any closure of the strait would lead to a surge in shipping insurance premiums and freight costs. Any alternative route would add to time and costs for exporters, the official added. Live Events The Federation of Indian Export Organisations said that there are temporary headwinds and there could be some short-term impact on demand and logistics—particularly in the Gulf region, which serves as a crucial hub for Indian exports . 'Increased shipping costs , longer transit times, and rising marine insurance premiums may add pressure, especially in price -sensitive sectors,' said S C Ralhan, President, FIEO. The official said that insurers may raise costs if risks continue to rise but New Delhi's ability to intervene in the matter maybe minimal as the country doesn't own any shipping line. Indian industries dependent on global supply chains for energy, chemicals, fertilizers, metals, and food products could face serious shortages and escalating costs, cautioned experts. This assumes significance as following Israeli airstrikes on Houthi forces last week tensions have escalated, placing India's westbound exports at fresh risk. Similarly, shipping threats are rising in the Red Sea, exporters said. If security conditions force shipping to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope, delivery times could increase by up to two weeks, sharply raising costs for Indian exporters of engineering goods, textiles, chemicals, and critical imports.

UPS vs NPS: Deadline to choose between Unified Pension Scheme and National Pension System extended; check details

The finance ministry has extended the deadline for central government employees to choose between the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and the National Pension System (NPS) by three months, from June 30 to September 30, 2025. The move comes after various stakeholders, including employee unions and retirees' associations, sought more time to assess their options. The UPS, which came into effect on April 1 this year, offers an assured monthly pension and a lump sum payout on retirement, unlike the NPS which does not guarantee fixed returns. 'In view of representations received from stakeholders requesting an extension of the cut-off date, the Government of India has decided to extend the cut-off date for exercising the option for UPS by three months, i.e., up to 30 September 2025 for eligible existing employees, past retirees, and the legally wedded spouses of deceased past retirees,' the inance Ministry said in a press release issued today. Key Details: Who can to switch to UPS? Central government employees who were in service on or after April 1, 2025. Retirees who retired on or before March 31, 2025, with at least 10 years of service or retired under fundamental rules not treated as penal action. Legally wedded spouses of deceased retirees who meet eligibility criteria. Irrevocable Option: Once a government employee opts for UPS, they cannot revert to NPS. The choice is final. Deadline for new recruits: Newly recruited central government employees must choose between UPS and NPS within 30 days of joining. Treatment of NPS Corpus: For those who switch to UPS, their existing NPS corpus will be transferred to a PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) account under UPS. What if you missed the deadline? According to the UPS FAQs, failure to exercise the option by the deadline would imply a default continuation under the NPS. The government has also recently expanded benefits under UPS by extending gratuity eligibility to those opting for the scheme, further enhancing its attractiveness as a post-retirement safety net. FTAs: Goyal says India shaping free trade agreements prioritising domestic industries; addressing their 'concerns and needs'

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal affirmed that India's free trade agreements (FTAs) prioritize domestic industry interests through extensive stakeholder consultations, carefully balancing offensive and defensive needs. He emphasized pursuing trade pacts with complementary economies, ensuring national and public interests are upheld. Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Monday said India is shaping its free trade agreements (FTAs) considering the interests of domestic industry, holding extensive consultations with stakeholders. Speaking at an event to mark the third anniversary of Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi, Goyal stressed that both the offensive and defensive needs of Indian industries are being considered while engaging with potential trade partners. 'We do all our FTAs after holding extensive stakeholder consultations and meetings. We address their (industries) concerns and needs,' PTI cited the minister. Goyal further noted that India is pursuing trade pacts with countries that complement, rather than compete with, its economy. 'Going forward also, we will do FTAs which will keep in mind national and public interests,' he added. The minister also used the occasion to reflect on the significance of Vanijya Bhawan, calling it a symbol of modern and integrated governance. He said the building represents a broader vision of India's commercial evolution over the past decade. He said the event was more than just marking the anniversary of a physical building, it was a celebration of a transformative vision that has driven the nation's progress over the last 11 years. He highlighted how platforms like the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) have opened up public procurement to entrepreneurs across India, including those from remote areas. 'E-commerce today provides mechanisms to discover the best price and bring producers from every corner into national supply chains,' he added. Addressing staff, Goyal also stressed upon the importance of collective responsibility within the ministry. Urging a cleaner and more efficient workplace, he said, 'by next year, same time, our house keeping staff should be 50 per cent of what it is today.'
