NGO urges stronger UN maritime laws at ocean conference
T'puram: Representatives from the city-based ocean conservation NGO, Friends of Marine Life (FML), attended a five-day United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France. They raised concerns about the pollution faced by the Arabian Sea following two shipping disasters near the state's coast.
The sinking of MSC Elsa 3 caused immense pollution along the southern coast, while MV Wan Hai, which caught fire off Kozhikode, carried several chemical cargoes onboard.
In a presentation, the NGO stated that international maritime laws are inadequate to identify and penalise those responsible, as demonstrated by the situation in Kerala. They urged the UN to establish laws to penalise either the manufacturing company or the transporting company if plastic or chemical waste ends up in the ocean.
"This is important because the lives of fisherfolk depend on the ocean's health. Strong regulation would help protect marine habitats, marine life and communities relying on the sea by holding responsible parties accountable. We put this message across at the conference attended by delegates and govt representatives from across the world," said Robert Panipilla of FML, who attended the conference along with research scholar Kumar Sahayaraju.

The NGO also took part in a discussion on the challenges faced by small scale fishing and Blue Economy interventions around the world. FML represents the coastal community, comprising largely of small scale fisherfolk and conducts seabed studies and ocean conservation activities.
The fisheries and environmental ministers from Costa Rica, Senegal, Madagascar and Germany attended the discussion.

Madurai/Trichy: Governor R N Ravi on Saturday led the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations in Madurai, stunning the crowd by performing 51 consecutive push-ups on stage following a group yoga session with more than 10,000 students. North Chennai residents to pitch greener alternatives to WtE plant
Chennai: With growing resistance to the proposed waste-to-energy (WtE) plant at Kodungaiyur, the Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations (FNCRWA) is preparing to submit a detailed proposal advocating environmentally sustainable waste management practices. At the heart of their campaign is the call to abandon the incinerator-based model in favour of decentralized, non-polluting systems. Drawing from working models in Kerala and other states, the federation has proposed biogas generation at the household and community level, city-wide decentralized composting, plastic recycling centres, and Resource Recovery Centres (RRCs) to sort and manage waste before it reaches landfills. Last week, the federation and allied environmentalists submitted a petition to mayor Priya, requesting that the WtE plant be scrapped. The mayor, while acknowledging public opposition, asked them to provide an actionable plan outlining viable alternatives, particularly for handling non-recyclable plastics. "Instead of one massive plant, Chennai can invest in 1,000 smaller composting units and recycling hubs spread across the city." The federation says that incineration not only generates toxic emissions but also leaves behind large volumes of ash that need further disposal. Environmentalist Geo Damien from Poovulagin Nanbargal said that at least 10% of Chennai's plastic waste cannot be recycled or incinerated efficiently. "That fraction alone would produce 300 tonnes of toxic ash. Instead of burning it, the city can either isolate it in secure landfills or send it to cement factories where it can be co-processed with minimal residue. " FNCRWA says the shift to sustainable methods is not only technically feasible but essential for the health and future of North Chennai residents, who have long borne the burden of the city's waste.

LKG, UKG classes to commence in 120 anganwadis this year
Hubballi: In a move to strengthen early childhood education at govt-run anganwadi centres, the women and child welfare department will introduce LKG and UKG classes at 120 centres in the district starting this academic year. The education department has already initiated similar efforts in govt primary schools. The state govt earlier announced the launch of pre-primary education in various districts, which is now being implemented. Admitting children to pre-KG has become expensive in private institutions. Today, the obsession with English-medium schools has increased among parents. Parents want their children to study in convents even if they have to work. This is also causing enrolment in govt schools to decline. Realising this, the Women and Child Welfare Department decided to teach pre-primary education across the state. Through this, it started an effort to attract parents to govt Anganwadis. There is a rising demand for LKG/UKG in schools among parents, especially in rural areas. Deputy Director of the Women and Child Welfare Department, Dharwad, Huligemma Kukanur, said that there are 1,622 anganwadis functioning in the district. The department asked for a list of anganwadis to start pre-KG classes. Therefore, a list of 120 anganwadis has been sent to the govt for approval. Soon, after directions from the govt, the classes will start, she said. Shobha Karikatti, a contract teacher at PM SHRI School, Amargol, said that in UKG, 35 children and in LKG, 27 children were admitted, running at full strength. Teaching methods are different in private institutions. Activity-based education is our first priority. For that, we revised many toys, materials, flashcards, notes for teachers, etc. Pre-KG teachers will be trained at the District Institute of Education and Training every year. The English language is also included for children. For the intellectual and mental development of children, activity-based teaching is provided, she said.
