Guv Ravi does 51 push-ups at yoga day event
Madurai/Trichy: Governor R N Ravi on Saturday led the 11th
International Yoga Day
celebrations in Madurai, stunning the crowd by performing 51 consecutive push-ups on stage following a group yoga session with more than 10,000 students.
The event, held at Velammal Global School, began around 8am with enthusiastic participation from students, teachers, and yoga enthusiasts.
During the hour-long session, Ravi, 73, performed various asanas and breathing exercises. He shared practical tips on maintaining correct posture during push-ups and encouraged students to challenge themselves, before he himself went on to perform push-ups 51 times. "Youngsters should aim to do at least 100 push-ups consecutively," he said, drawing loud applause from the crowd.
Addressing the gathering, Ravi described yoga as India's timeless gift to the world. "Each year, the number of participants across the globe continues to grow. Yoga transcends religion, region, and language, it is a universal practice for wellness," he said. Madurai Medical College marked the day with a yoga session at its playground, where over 300 students, paramedical staff, and faculty members participated.

BHEL celebrated yoga day at the indoor auditorium of the community centre in Kailasapuram township. Students from RSK HSS, BHEL Matriculation HSS, Boiler Plant GHSS, and Boiler Plant Boys HSS also performed on their school premises. At the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), around 200 people, including faculty, staff, and students, performed yoga exercises at the university auditorium. Vice-chancellor M Krishnan expressed pride in the selection of student Rakesh from Kendriya Vidyalaya to perform at the PM's yoga event in Visakhapatnam.

"We follow the same traditions which are followed during Puri Rath Yatra," he said. The festival is a spectacle to behold, featuring a 26-ft high chariot crafted by skilled carpenters from Begunia, a village renowned for its artisans. The chariot carries the deities to the Sri Gundicha Temple, located about 1.5km from the main temple, amid a sea of devotees. A unique aspect of the Rath Yatra is the enthusiastic participation of thousands of tribals from nearby areas. Dressed in their traditional attire, they perform Dhemsa dance, and drink Handia, adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the festival. Sarada Prasad Mishra, chief priest of the temple, said the rituals during Rath Yatra are meticulously observed. He said the deities, currently in Anasara Gruha, will undergo specific rituals before embarking on their journey. "We apply 'fuluri tel' and administer 'dasamularistha' to cure their fever before Rath Yatra. Both medicines are meticulously prepared following the steps prescribed in scriptures," Mishra said.

Muslim man takes care of Hindu woman, performs last rites as per her religion
Kanpur: Showing a unique humanitarian gesture, a Muslim man took care of a Hindu woman during her illness and after she passed away, he performed her last rites as per the Hindu traditions. Waqar Ali, 60, a native of Usri Villa village in Rasoolabad, Auraiya, relocated to Aseni village of Dibiyapur 30 years ago. He lived in a deteriorated building of an old cooperative society due to housing constraints. Here he also provided care for a destitute woman, Bhagwati, for 30 years, but her health deteriorated over time, and on Saturday, 55-year-old Bhagwati breathed her last. Understanding the significance of religious customs in final rites, he consulted with the Hindu community. After learning about the situation, members of the Hindu community supported his efforts and together, they conducted Bhagwati's last rites at Dibiyapur crematorium according to Hindu traditions. 3 Mizoram villages hit by leaf fodder caterpillar outbreak, say officials
1 2 Aizawl: An outbreak of leaf folder caterpillar at three villages in northeastern Mizoram's Khawzawl district has been reported by farmers, causing destruction in the jhum cultivation areas of 80 families, Khawzawl district agriculture and farmers' welfare officials said on Sunday. The district agriculture office on Saturday sent assistant district agriculture officer Lalrammuana and two other officials to Vangtlang, Chalrang and New Chalrang villages to conduct an on-spot study of the situation. Chalrang and New Chalrang villages share the same jhum area where paddy fields belonging to 210 families have been attacked by swarms of leaf folder caterpillar (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis) of which paddy fields of 70 families witnessed a higher number of pests in the paddy stems. Paddy fields owned by at least 80 farmers of Vangtlang village have also been attacked by the same pests of which paddy fields owned by 10 farmers witnessed a larger number of caterpillars. It was also reported that the caterpillars have attacked maize plants in the jhum areas of Khawzawl town and Neihdawn village. Some local traditional agriculture experts opine that the caterpillar outbreak is an omen, as 'Thingtam' or gregarious flowering and deaths of a bamboo species called 'rawthing' (Bambusa tulda) is predicted to come this year. The 'Thingtam' occurs in a cycle of every 48 years and the rodents which fed on the fruits of the dying bamboo caused destruction to the paddy cultivation areas and triggered famine in earlier times. The last Thingtam occurred in 1977.
