CM to inaugurate urban health centre in Adyar next month

On July 3, the urban welfare centre under construction in Adyar will be inaugurated, Health Minister M. Subramanian announced on Wednesday on the sidelines of the launch of protein kits for persons undergoing renal dialysis at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
The Minister said that the government had proposed to launch 708 health centres across the State. Of this, 500 has already been inaugurated. The Chief Minister will be commissioning the rest of the 208 centres.
Currently, 9,180 persons are undergoing dialysis in government hospitals in the State. A person on dialysis spends between ₹2,000 and ₹25,000 per session and may require at least two sessions a week.
The scheme to provide high protein food would benefit poor patients, Mr. Subramanian added. The protein kit, which provides 27 gm of protein (around 40 KCal), contains 100 ml milk, 2 eggs, black/white lentils, 3 biscuits each weighing 20 g. The provision of protein kit had been announced in the Assembly Budget earlier this year.
During the event, the Minister interacted with patients who had undergone complex procedures at the hospital. Senior health officials of the department were also present.

CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramanian launched mental health counselling for students who failed to clear the NEET-UG exam at the 104 helpline centre at DMS campus on Monday. Speaking to media persons, Subramanian said, 1,35,715 people appeared for NEET-UG from Tamil Nadu this year, among them 76,181 people qualified and 59,534 did not clear the exam. In the first phase, counselling has begun with 80 counsellors in two shifts. Senior counsellors have contacted around 600 students. Even if students did not clear NEET this year, they can appear next time, so students are advised not to lose hope and continue to study. Parents also should not get too emotional about the results, the minister said. When asked about the Coimbatore girl who secured All India Rank 40 in NEET but was not featured in the official rank list released by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the minister said, health secretary will write to the officials concerned in the NTA and seek an explanation.

Health Department launches counselling for nearly 60,000 students who didn't clear NEET

: The Health Department on Monday launched a counselling initiative for students who did not clear the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the results for which was released on June 14. In the first phase, the department plans to reach out to 59,534 students who did not clear the examination. Shortly after launching the initiative, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian told reporters that the department had been conducting counselling for those who did not pass the examination as well as for those who cleared NEET but did not secure medical admissionsin the past few years. The counselling initiative is being carried out through the State's Health helpline 104 and Tele MANAS 14416. Apart from psychological counselling, students are also given information on the academic opportunities available. 'This year, 1,35,715 students appeared for NEET from Tamil Nadu. Of this, 76,181 students qualified,' he said. In the first phase, 80 counsellors will work in two shifts to reach out to students and counsel them. The Minister said students would be encouraged to continue studying. Parents would also be counselled to control their emotions, and advised not to create fear or panic in children, he added. The Minister said that while 76,181 students had qualified in NEET, the State had a total of 11,850 undergraduate medical seats in 75 government and private medical colleges as well as deemed institutions. Applications received Till Sunday, nearly 32,000 applications were received for MBBS/BDS courses. Once the Directorate General of Health Services releases the counselling schedule, the State will begin the counselling for admission to medical and dental courses. Asked about a student in Coimbatore who scored well in NEET but found her name missing from the official rank list, Mr. Subramanian said the Health Secretary would take up the issue with officials of the National Testing Agency.
