Mets Facing Clay Holmes Decision After Sixth Straight Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Mets are amid their worst stretch of the 2025 MLB season. Dropping their sixth straight game on Thursday night, a 7-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves, the Mets no longer have sole possession of first place in the NL East.

New York's starting pitcher Clay Holmes struggled mightily on Thursday, walking a season-high six batters in 4.2 innings of work. Now tied atop their division with the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets are entering a critical series against Philly this weekend.
New York not only brings a six-game losing streak into the series with Philadelphia, but significant pitching staff questions as well.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza would not reveal Friday's starter when speaking with reporters postgame, but it was later reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com that Blade Tidwell will be getting the ball. However, Friday's starter is not the only pitching question New York faces.

Holmes, who is in his first season as a full-time starting pitcher, has already surpassed a career-high in innings pitched for a season. While it's unclear if his six walks on Thursday were a product of that, Mendoza admitted postgame the team is keeping a close eye on Holmes' workload.
As Mendoza alluded to, the Mets currently face a decision on how to best manage the 32-year-old right-hander. Prior to this season, Holmes' career-high in innings pitched was 70 in 2021. He is now at 83 through 15 starts, and there are still more than four months remaining before the postseason begins.

Mets at Phillies prediction: Odds, expert picks, starting pitchers, betting trends, and stats for June 20

It's Friday, June 20 and the Mets (45-30) are in Philadelphia to take on the Phillies (45-30). Blade Tidwell is slated to take the mound for New York against Zack Wheeler for Philadelphia. The Phillies are 7-1 in the last eight games and 8-2 over the past 10 to follow up a 0-5 and 1-9 stretch of play. Philadelphia took three out of four against Miami despite outscoring the Marlins 14-13. The Mets are on a six-game losing streak after being swept by Tampa Bay and Atlanta. New York has scored 14 runs in that span with three games of one or fewer run. New York swept Philadelphia earlier this season at home, so this appears to be good timing for the Phillies to win the series and attempt to extract revenge in the form of a series sweep. Orioles at Yankees Prediction: Odds, expert picks, starting pitchers, betting trends and stats for June 20

It's Friday, June 20 and the Orioles (32-42) are in Bronx to take on the Yankees (43-31). Tomoyuki Sugano is slated to take the mound for Baltimore against Max Fried for New York. Baltimore is coming off a split of a series against Tampa Bay where 39 combined runs were scored. The Orioles are 16-6 over the last 22 games after going 16-36 through the first 52 games. New York lost six straight, which was a season-long losing streak, before ending a four-game series against the Los Angeles with a 7-3 win. The Yankees were swept by the Red Sox and lost three of four against the Angels mainly because of the offense. New York scored five runs total over their six-game losing streak, but bounced back with seven yesterday in a game that featured two rain delays. Let's dive into the matchup and find a sweat or two. Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Orioles and the Yankees 'Aaron Judge has been cold lately with two hits and three walks (two intentional) since that game-tying homer in the 9th against Boston (six game span). His odds of hitting .400 before the All-Star break are barely worth a sprinkle now as he's at a .366 batting average. However, he is still -110 to +110 to lead the MLB in homers and with 26 on the season, he ranks second. I don't expect Cal Raleigh (27) to lead the MLB and Shohei Ohtani (25) is pitching now, so the wear and tear could affect the NL MVP favorite, so I think Judge is still a good bet to lead the MLB in homers.' This Date in Baseball - St. Louis' Tony La Russa becomes 3rd manager with 2,500 career victories

June 21 1916 — Rube Foster of the Red Sox pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the New York Yankees. Foster struck out three and walked three and pitched the first no-hitter at Fenway Park. 1938 — Pinky Higgins of the Boston Red Sox extended his consecutive hit string to 12, with eight hits in a doubleheader split with the Detroit Tigers. He went 4 for 4 in an 8-3 win in the opener and 4 for 4 in a 5-4 loss in the nightcap. The next day, Higgins struck out against Vern Kennedy in his first at-bat to end the streak. 1939 — The New York Yankees announced Lou Gehrig's retirement, based on the report that he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The 36-year-old star remained as the team as captain. 1941 — Lefty Grove's 20-game consecutive win streak at Fenway Park ended with a 13-9 loss to the St. Louis Browns. The streak spanned from May 3, 1938, to May 12, 1941. 1950 — Joe DiMaggio gets his 2,000th hit, a 7th-inning single off the Indians'Marino Pieretti, as the Yanks win, 8 - 2. DiMaggio joins Luke Appling and Wally Moses as the only active players with 2,000 or more hits. 1956 — In a rare double one-hitter, Chicago's Jack Harshman outdueled Connie Johnson and George Zuverink of Baltimore as the White Sox beat the Orioles 1-0. 1964 — Jim Bunning of the Philadelphia Phillies pitched a 6-0 perfect game against the New York Mets in the opener of a Father's Day doubleheader. Bunning threw 89 pitches and struck out 10, including John Stephenson to end the game. The no-hitter gave Bunning one in each league and Gus Triandos became the first catcher to handle no-hitters in both leagues. 1970 — Detroit Tigers shortstop Cesar Gutierrez had seven hits in seven times at bat in a 9-8, 12-inning victory over the Cleveland Indians. Gutierrez had six singles and a double. 1989 — Carlton Fisk set an American League record for homers by a catcher and drove in three runs to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 7-3 victory over the New York Yankees. Fisk hit his 307th homer as a catcher to pass the Yankees' Yogi Berra. 2000 — Eric Chavez hit for the cycle in Oakland's 10-3 win over Baltimore. Chavez doubled in the second inning, singled in the fourth, tripled in the fifth and finished off the cycle with a homer in the seventh. 2005 — Jeff Larish matched a College World Series record with three homers, and J.J. Sferra drove in the game-winning run with a bloop single in the 11th inning as Arizona State rallied for an 8-7 victory and eliminated hometown favorite Nebraska. Larish's record-tying third homer tied it in the bottom of the ninth, and Sferra's single in the 11th punctuated the 4-hour, 7-minute game. 2006 — Jose Reyes hit for the cycle in the New York Mets' 6-5 loss to Cincinnati. 2009 — St. Louis' Tony La Russa joined Connie Mack (3,831) and John McGraw (2,763) as the only managers with 2,500 victories following a 12-5 win over Kansas City. 2011 — Minnesota tied a major league record by opening with eight consecutive hits against San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner, en route to a 9-2 win. Ben Revere had two hits and two RBIs to highlight an eight-run first inning. 2021 — Jacob deGrom pitches five scoreless innings to lead the Mets to a 4-2 win over the Braves. This extends his scoreless innings streak to 30 innings, lowering his ERA to 0.50. He becomes the first pitcher in history to go twelve straight starts of giving up to one or no earned runs topping the record set by Bob Gibson in 1968. _____
